    Geographical Information
Location: Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, an archipelago 14 miles to the west of and 30 miles to the north of the French coast. It is approximately 130 miles south of the English coast. Size : 9 miles by 5 miles, approx 45 square miles. It is impossible to be more than 3 miles from the sea at any point, and the longest distance as the crow flies is 11 miles (from Groznez in the northwest to La Rocque in the southeast). Tides: The difference between high water and low water on a spring tide can be over 40 ft. On neap - or small tides - it is much less, but even when there is comparatively little tidal movement, it pays to take great care in certain parts of the Island. The east coast between St Helier and Gorey is where the effect of the tide can be seen most easily. At high water the sea covers the beaches and laps against the seawall. At low water it retreats for up to two of miles, exposing acre after acre of gullies, shingle banks and rocks. The island gains many tens of square miles at low tide (shown in yellow on the above map). Weather : mild and southerly, like northern France, averaging 25 C in the summer months. The island slopes gently north to south, a natural sun trap providing perfect garden and agricultural growing conditions. It catches the earliest spring sun, and has a very long growing season. However, very thick sea fogs do happen in spring and autumn, which can interrupt transport services, planes and ferries.

    TRANSPORTATION AND MAPS
Transportation is the moving of people and goods from one place to another and connects one place with many others. Location is an important reason why communities begin and grow. There are many forms of transportation students can identify with and each kind has played a major role in the development of communities in New Jersey. The state's location bordering two major cities —New York City and Philadelphia — and two surrounding rivers serving as harbors—the Delaware and the Hudson Rivers — has shaped New Jersey's role in the United States as a "pathway" of goods, such as food or clothing, and people. In this section students will focus on one method of transportation, the automobile, and how people have come to rely on cars every day. Through the examination and comparison of present and past New Jersey road maps students will come to realize how the construction of roads and highways reflected the prominence of cars. OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES
    • Activity 1 - Students will discuss and brainstorm different forms of transportation people use in New Jersey and the United States.

New Jersey - Geography Middle Atlantic state of the E United States. It is bordered by New York State (N and, across the Hudson R. and New York Harbor, E), the Atlantic Ocean (E), Delaware, across Delaware Bay (S), and Pennsylvania, across the Delaware R. (W). New Jersey is surrounded by water except along the 50 mi (80 km) of northern border with New York state. The northern third of the state lies within the Appalachian Highland region, where ridges running northeast and southwest shelter valleys containing pleasant streams and glacial lakes. Beyond the crest of wooded slopes are long-established farms given over to dairying and field crops. The Kittatinny Mts., with the state's highest elevations (up to 1,803 ft/550 m), stretch across the northwest corner of New Jersey from the New York border to the Delaware Water Gap. In 1961 New Jersey, along with three other states and the Federal government, signed the Delaware River Basin Compact, providing for the control of water resources and rights throughout the Delaware River basin. Southeast of the Highlands lie the Triassic lowlands or piedmont plains, extending from the northeastern border to
