How often have you had a knock on the door, opened it, and come face to face with a bearded Jehovah's Witness? This all may sound rather bizarre, but Jehovah’s Witnesses seem to have a sort of unwritten traditional oral law that says beards are a big no no. I have no doubt that there are some Jehovah‘s Witnesses who do wear beards but these are most certainly the exception rather than the norm. More often than not, such one‘s are encouraged to shave their beards off. Generally, there does not seem to be anything specific in Watchtower literature that explicitly forbids beards, but there are instances where it is strongly suggested that Witnesses should not wear one: In the Watchtower magazine, "Questions from Readers " section, under the question: "When Jesus Christ was a man on earth, did he wear a beard?", it answers: "Today Christian ministers, like the early Christians, are concerned with neatness and cleanness, but they strive to dress inconspicuously, so that their appearance does not in any way detract from the dignity or the effectiveness of the message they bear. (2 Cor. 6:3, 4) In recent years in many lands a beard or long hair on a man attracts immediate notice and may, in the minds of the majority, classify such a person undesirably with extremists or as rebels against society. God's ministers want to avoid making any impression that would take attention away from their ministry or hinder anyone from listening to the truth. They know that people are watching true Christians very critically and that to a great extent they judge the entire congregation and the good news by the minister's appearance as a representative of the congregation. Last year, there were rather suprising rebounds of publisher's number in USA, Australia, France, Canada, Britain, and Norway. This upward trend seems to become more consistent this year. Countries with consistent decline are only several. The list of countries with zero or negative growth has shrunk in 2003: Belgium, Britain, Finland, Hongkong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Zimbabwe The interesting exception to the global rebound is again Japan, where the decline of the number of publishers continues. The absolute number of the publishers who stopped preaching in Japan is the largest among the developed countries. The decline of 951 publishers in Japan is by far the largest in the world, (2nd Britain -323, 3rd Finland -191) and even larger than her last year's decline of 895.
