Who was the stupidest U.S. president?
22-Jun-2001 Dear Cecil: I understand that Thomas Jefferson was our smartest president. Who was our stupidest? Second stupidest? A related pair of questions: Did Yale not have an admissions department in the 1960s? If it did, doesn't it owe the country an apology? Chris Lamb the elder, Baltimore Dear Cecil:: I realize there's probably no way the following can be determined with utter certainty. But in the best judgment of presidential scholars, have any of our chief executivesin addition to Ulysses S. Grant and George W. Bush, I meanbeen alcoholics? David English, Somerville, Massachusetts Cecil replies: I get the feeling you guys are trying to make a point here. But this is no time to be coy. Let's put the question bluntly: Is George W. Bush the stupidest person ever to serve as U.S. president? If not, who is? And isn't he a drunk besides? It's all the fault of those goddamn Republicans on the Supreme Court. Why, I oughta . . . There, there. Let's take this one step at a time.

THOMAS JEFFERSON 3rd U.S. President Biographer James Parton said Thomas Jefferson could "calculate an eclipse, survey an estate, tie an artery, plan an edifice, try a cause, break a horse, dance a minuet, and play the violin." Not to mention serving as U.S. president (1801-1809), vice-president, secretary of state, minister to France, congressman, governor of Virginia, founder of the University of Virginia, and president of the American Philosophical Society. For all that, Jefferson is best remembered as a champion of human rights and the lead draftsman of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson followed John Adams as president and was succeeded by James Madison
Extra credit : DNA tests in 1998 showed that Jefferson may well have fathered a child or children by one of his slaves, Sally Hemings ... Jefferson was played by Nick Nolte in the 1995 movie Jefferson in Paris ... Jefferson's face appears on the U.S. nickel and the two-dollar bill.

Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President of the United States and Author of the Declaration of Independence
Thomas Jefferson - The Man Thomas Jefferson wished to be remembered for three achievements in his public life. He had served as governor of Virginia, as U.S. minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington , as vice-president in the administration of John Adams , and as president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. On his tombstone, however, which he designed and for which he wrote the inscription, there is no mention of these offices. Rather, it reads that Thomas Jefferson was "author of the Declaration of American Independence , of the State of Virginia for religious freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia" and, as he requested, "not a word more." Historians might want to add other accomplishmentsfor example, his distinction as an architect, naturalist, and linguistbut in the main they would concur with his own assessment. Early Life Jefferson was born at Shadwell in what is now Albemarle County, Va., on Apr. 13, 1743. He treated his pedigree lightly, but his mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, came from one of the first families of Virginia; his father, Peter Jefferson, was a well-to-do landowner, although not in the class of the wealthiest planters. Jefferson attended (1760-62) the College of William and Mary and then studied law with

My only fear is that I may live too long. This would be a subject of dread to me. That government is best which governs the least, because its people discipline themselves. Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital. It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself. I find the pain of a little censure, even when it is unfounded, is more acute than the pleasure of much praise. Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom. Nothing gives a person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.

    Jefferson's Contributions
Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Rush, January 22, 1797 Thomas Jefferson entered an ill-defined vice-presidency on March 4, 1797. For guidance on how to conduct himself, he had to rely on a brief reference in the U.S. Constitution, the eight-year experience of John Adams, and his own common sense. Of a profoundly different political and personal temperament from his predecessor, Jefferson knew his performance in that relatively new office would influence its operations well into the future. Unlike Adams, who shared the political beliefs of the president with whom he served, Jefferson and his president belonged to different political parties—a situation that would prove to be unique in all the nation's history. No one who knew the two men expected that Vice President Jefferson would be inclined to serve as President Adams' principal assistant. More likely, he would confine his duties to presiding over the Senate and offering leadership to his anti-administration Republican party in quiet preparation for the election of Scholar and Legislator Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, in what is now Albemarle County, Virginia. He was the third child of Peter Jefferson, a surveyor, and Jane Randolph, daughter of a distinguished Virginia family. Classical languages formed the base of his early formal education. A thorough and diligent student, inspired by the Enlightenment's belief in the power of reason to govern human behavior, Jefferson graduated from the College of William and Mary after only two years, at the age of nineteen. Dr. William Small, the chair of mathematics at the college, helped cultivate Jefferson's intellectual interests, especially in science. In addition to his academic pursuits, young Thomas excelled as a horseman and violinist. He studied law under George Wythe, Virginia's most eminent legal scholar of that era. Admitted to the Virginia bar in 1767, Jefferson maintained a successful practice until abandoning the legal profession at the start of the American
