Letter from President Thomas Jefferson
The following letter was writen by Thomas Jefferson for Meriwether Lewis. It is reproduced the actual way in which it was written. Therefore the mis-spelling is the way that it originally appeared.
"To Meriwether Lewis, esquire, captain of the first regiment of infantry of the United States of America:
"Your situation as secratary of the president of the United States, has made you aquainted with the objects of my confidential message of January 18, 1803, to the legislature; you have seen the act they passed, which, though expressed in general terms, was meant to sanction those objects, and you are appointed to carry them to execution.
"Instruments for ascertaining, by celestial observations, the geography of the country through which you will pass, have already been provided. Light articles for barter and presents among the Indians, arms for your attendants, say from ten to twelve men, boats, tents, and other traveling apparatus, with ammunition, medicine, surgical instruments and provisions, you will will have prepared, with such aids as the secretary at war can yield in his department; and from him also you will receive authority to engage among our troops, by voluntary agreement, the attendants abovementioned; over whom you, as thier commanding officer, are invested with all the powers the laws give in such a case.
"As you movements, while within the limits of the United States, will be better directed by occasional communications, adapted to circumstances as they arise, they will not be noticed here. What follows will respect your proceedings after your departure form the United States.

Thomas Jefferson In the thick of party conflict in 1800, Thomas Jefferson wrote in a private letter, "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." This powerful advocate of liberty was born in 1743 in Albermarle County, Virginia, inheriting from his father, a planter and surveyor, some 5,000 acres of land, and from his mother, a Randolph, high social standing. He studied at the College of William and Mary, then read law. In 1772 he married Martha Wayles Skelton, a widow, and took her to live in his partly constructed mountaintop home, Monticello. Freckled and sandy-haired, rather tall and awkward, Jefferson was eloquent as a correspondent, but he was no public speaker. In the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Continental Congress, he contributed his pen rather than his voice to the patriot cause. As the "silent member" of the Congress, Jefferson, at 33, drafted the Declaration of Independence. In years following he labored to make its words a reality in Virginia. Most notably, he wrote a bill establishing religious freedom, enacted in 1786.

Thomas Jefferson
was born on April 13, 1743 at Shadwell in Albemarle county, Virginia. He had inherited a considerable landed estate from his father, and doubled it by a happy marriage on Jan. 1, 1772, to Martha Wayles Skelton. He was elected to the House of Burgesses when he was 25. As a member of the Continental Congress in 1776, Jefferson was chosen together with John Adams, Benjamin Franklin , Robert Livingstone and Roger Sherman to draft the Declaration of Independence. He wrote the declaration himself and was amended by Adams and Franklin. In 1784 Jefferson became, first, a commissioner to negotiate commercial treaties, and then, Benjamin Franklin's successor as minister. Toward the end of his mission he reported the unfolding revolution in France. Eventually he was repelled by the excesses of the French Revolution. He thoroughly disapproved France's imperialistic phase under Napoleon Bonaparte . Because of his absence in Europe, Jefferson had no direct part in the framing or ratification of the Constitution of the United States.

In 1757, when Thomas was only fourteen, his father died, leaving him heir to an enormous estate. On his deathbed, his father left an order that his son’s education, already well advanced in a preparatory school, should be completed at the College of William and Mary, a circumstance which Thomas always remembered with gratitude, saying that if he had to choose between the education and the estate his father left him, he would choose the education. His public life began on May 11, 1769, when Jefferson took his seat as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, George Washington also being a member. Jefferson was then twenty-six years old. On becoming a public man he made a resolution “never to engage, while in public office, in any kind of enterprise for the improvement of my fortune, nor to wear any other character than that of a farmer.” On the close of his public career of nearly half a century, he could say that he had kept this resolution. On January 1, 1772 Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton, who was the daughter of John Wayles, a wealthy Williamsburg lawyer, from whom she inherited a large property. Her first husband, Bathurst Skelton died before she was twenty years of age, and Jefferson was one of her many suitors. A few days after their marriage, he took her to live in his partly constructed mountaintop home, Monticello. The next year, the death of Martha’s father brought them a great increase of fortune – doubling Jefferson’s estate.

Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson wished to be remembered for three achievements in his public life. He had served as governor of Virginia, as U.S. minister to France, as secretary of state under George Washington , as vice-president in the administration of John Adams, and as president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. On his tombstone, however, which he designed and for which he wrote the inscription, there is no mention of these offices. Rather, it reads that Thomas Jefferson was "author of the Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom, and Father of the University of Virginia" and, as he requested, "not a word more." Historians might want to add other accomplishmentsfor example, his distinction as an architect, naturalist, and linguistbut in the main they would concur with his own assessment.
Early Life
Jefferson was born at Shadwell in what is now Albemarle County, Va., on Apr. 13, 1743. He treated his pedigree lightly, but his mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, came from one of the first families of Virginia; his father, Peter Jefferson, was a well-to-do landowner, although not in the class of the wealthiest planters. Jefferson attended (1760-62) the College of William and Mary and then studied law with George WYTHE. In 1769 he began six years of service as a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses. The following year he began building Monticello on land inherited from his father. The mansion, which he designed in every detail, took years to complete, but part of it was ready for occupancy when he married Martha Wayles Skelton on Jan. 1, 1772. They had six children, two of whom survived into adulthood:

Thomas Jefferson Welcome to the Thomas Jefferson Page. My family has been to his home in Montecello, Virginia twice. It was amazing how farsighted Jefferson was in his time. He built his house at Montecello in a location where he could watch the progress on the construction of the University of Virginia. Jefferson was a member of the Virginia legislative assembly from 1769 to 1775. As a member of the Continental Congress, he drafted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. On his return to Virginia, he served in the legislature and was the Governor from 1779-1781 (during the revolution). On this page I've included the families of his immediate genealogy, plus some other links including those which link to other famous folks as well. Of course Jefferson was the 3rd President of the United States. Enjoy. You can access his ancestry Here Table of Contents Chapter 15 Mail

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.
