    YMCA - great family place to get fit and have fun!
    Cons might be considered pricey, but consider what you get. The Bottom Line Great place to go as a family. Wonderful programs. We often go after work or on weekends to walk the track, swim, play tennis, just relax and have fun. Full Review (Thanks to Melissa [Bops_Mom] for her help in introducing this new category!) My family and I have had a family membership at the local YMCA* for 11 years. Many years ago when I was in college, I had a student membership at the very same YMCA. The reason I tell you this background is to let you know that the YMCA is something you can do for life. Health and fitness are so important and we often take our good health for granted, that is, until we become sick. We've all heard the old adage: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure..." Well, this applies to your health and the YMCA! One of the main reasons that the YMCA is my fitness club of choice because it is family-oriented.

    Magnet Theme Beginning with the 1999-2000 school year, the San Pablo magnet theme was changed to Health and Fitness Magnet. The Health and Fitness Magnet at San Pablo Elementary is designed for students in grades k-5 who are interested in health and fitness, as well as academic achievement. Beginning with he philosophy of a sound mind and a sound body, this program provides the encouragement and opportunity to develop lifetime health and fitness skills. This program promotes health and fitness of students, in addition to strong academic program stressing basic skills. San Pablo provides knowledge in the areas of lifetime fitness skills, interpersonal skills, nutrition, and substance abuse. Students participate in activities with physical education and classroom teachers who provide direct instruction. Skills taught include: team sport skills, such as soccer, basketball, softball and football; individual sport skills such as tennis, golf, bowling and running; perceptual motor skills; and life-long activity fitness skills. Students also participate in Swim America at Fletcher High School pool adjacent to San Pablo's campus. The course instruction follows Red Cross guidelines. Special activities include field trips to the ATP tennis facility, Selva Marina and Jacksonville Golf and Country Clubs, Jax Beach Municipal Golf Course, and Beach Bowl for instruction from professionals. Clinics are conducted; by individuals or groups such as the Jacksonville Jaguar Football Team, the Jacksonville Cyclones Soccer Team and Lizard Kings Hockey Team, and basketball players from local colleges. Other programs include a Bicycle Safety Rodeo, Jazzercise classes, Jump Rope for Heart, juggling activities, and the Whales Tales Aquatic Safety Program. Clubs include the Walking and Fitness Club and the Garden Club.

    Nutrition and Exercise for a Healthy Body, Mind, Smile (CARLSBAD, CA) - Exercise and good nutrition are essential for building strong lungs, hearts, muscles, bones and teeth. The latter, however, is often overlooked when we list the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. But in truth, says Judi Sheppard Missett, founder and CEO of Jazzercise, both exercise and diet play a role in your healthy smile. Most children are aware of the important roles fluoride and calcium play in building strong teeth. Low-fat milk and dairy products are great sources of calcium, and many communities today offer fluoridated water. But you can choose foods that cleanse and protect your teeth as well. Foods that produce a high salivary flow, such as apples, celery, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and pears, remove staining bacteria and help prevent yellowing. The fiber in these foods also physically cleans the teeth. Eating fresh cranberries can even interrupt the bonding of bacteria before it can form damaging plaque. Strength Training Machines This area of the center has machines that will develop the main muscle groups: Ab/Back Machine: Muscles developed include the abdominals and back. Chest Press: Muscles developed include the chest and shoulders. Lat Pull/Upright Rowing: Muscles developed include the chest, upper back, shoulders and side (lats). Biceps Curl/Triceps Extension: This machine improves strength in the biceps (front of upper arm) and the triceps (back of upper arm). Leg Curl/Extension: The muscles of the front and back of the legs are developed at this station. Leg Press: This station improves strength in the quadriceps muscles (front of thigh) and the gluteals.
