Introduction Task Process Resources ... Conclusion Introduction: If it wasn't for jazz, we wouldn't have rock and roll. Doesn't the thought of that scare you? Jazz musicians have struggled and succeeded in creating a versatile form of music. The following is a brief introduction to jazz music and four of it's artists. The Task: To create a biography of the three artists given to you. These are not complicated biographies. Be sure to include all the information asked for. It's  roots date back to the 1880's with African origins. Jazz combines elements of African music with elements of Western European music. The birthplace of that combination, which is Jazz, is said to be New Orleans. One theory as to why New Orleans is the birthplace is contributed to the black Creole subculture. The Creoles were originally from the West Indies and lived under the Spanish and French rule in Louisiana. They became free Americans under the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The Creoles spoke Spanish and French and lived in the high society of the French district in New Orleans. The Creoles took pride in their formal knowledge of the Western European music and their social and cultural values that classified them as upper class. Their music focused on sight-readings and correct performances for they played at the Opera House and chamber ensembles.

For all the books and films that have been done about painters and writers who went to Paris , far less has been written about the lives of musicians from the United States who settled there, some for a while, a few for their whole lives. Yet American jazz musicians have felt the influence of that city on their creative abilities no less than did the Lost Generation of American writers after World War I and the impressionists and their successors before them. Much of their world, and of jazz itself, is still there to be seen and enjoyed.
    Nu Jazz

    Jazz Music Recommendations
I've been taking jazz guitar lessons from this really great local musician, Chris Cortez . The best part of the lessons is when we listen to great jazz music and he points out some amazing thing that the performers are doing. But, even without the commentary, I savor his recommendation of great jazz artists and albums. Pat Martino is one of those great artists, and Chris recommended that I listen to an album called 'Joyous Lake' which is not available on iTunes, but is available from Amazon as a re-released album called First Light . Another great recommendation was Chick Corea and Bobby McFerrin's album 'Play,' which is available from iTunes . You have to buy the whole album to be able to get 'Autumn Leaves' which is worth it. When you listen to 'Autumn Leaves' closely and are amazed at out 'rehearsed' it seems to be remind yourself that it probably wasn't rehearsed because that song is one of those standards that jazz musicians are expected to be able to play from memory. Last, but not least, check out Bill Frisell's version of Chain of Fools

    JAZZ
The traditional 'Jazz' section of our database is vast, but in this department you will only find a small selected range of recordings from that list of literally thousands of titles available worldwide - over 60,000 at the last count! Although none of us at CDS are into traditional ' Jazz' , ('Jazz-Rock' is our thing), increasing customer demand for the genre suggested it was appropriate to create a separate 'Jazz' department that would enable customers to browse directly through the 'genre' of their choice. We have a broad range of music fans now asking us to service them with 'Jazz' titles, simply because they like the way we do business. These customers provided us with much of the early information that initiated the department, and as such, it tends to reflect much of what they are buying to a large extent. Once again, we would like to stress that we are certainly not experts in this 'Jazz' field - but our Customer Services staff are more than happy to deal with any queries you have and special order the discs you require at no extra cost.

"Providing Excellence in Entertainment Since 1970" George Benson George Benson has worn a wide variety of hats over the years. R&B lovers know him as the guitar-playing vocalist who is responsible for such hits as "Give Me The Night" and "Turn Your Love Around," while the jazz world continues to treasure his classic instrumental albums of the 1960s and early 1970s. It goes without saying that Benson's million-selling " Breezin' " album of 1976 practically defined the NAC, quiet storm, and contemporary jazz radio formats. Because the guitarist/singer is so diverse and unpredictable, one never knows what he will do from one album to the next. On " Absolute Benson ," the eight-time GRAMMY-winner surprised us once again by emphasizing instrumental music. While his previous album, 1998's " Standing Together ," was full of R&B/pop singing, only three of "

    Jazz and the Beat Generation
As the Beat movement was getting underway, bebop was already going strong, especially in New York City, where 52nd Street was bustling with activity in jazz clubs up and down its length. Bebop was an innovative style of jazz which saw its heyday in the '40s, characterized by smaller combos as opposed to big bands and a larger focus on virtuosity. Bebop's renaissance came about in the heart of New York City, where musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Max Roach and Miles Davis were ushering in a new era for jazz music. Jack Kerouac Allen Ginsberg and friends spent much of their time in New York clubs such as the Red Drum, Minton's, the Open Door and other hangouts, shooting the breeze and digging the music. Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis rapidly became what Allen Ginsberg dubbed "Secret Heroes" to this group of aesthetes. Why did jazz suddenly become such a driving force behind the writings of the Beat authors? What similarities can we find between jazz musicians and the Beats? Perhaps the most obvious comparison we can make is indicated by the very word "beat." "The word 'beat' was primarily in use after World War II by jazz musicians and hustlers as a slang term meaning down and out, or poor and exhausted". Kerouac went on to twist the meaning of the term "beat" to serve his own purposes, explaining that it meant "beatitude, not beat up. You feel this. You feel it in a beat, in jazz real cool jazz".

O ver the last century, North Carolina has produced some of the most influential artists in American jazz. Max Roach, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath, and John Coltrane were all born in the state; Dizzy Gillespie grew up just beyond the border in South Carolina, but attended school and studied music in Laurinburg. These jazzmen eventually left North Carolina to pursue their music and careers, but their deeply-shared regional roots remained with them. They sought each other out and gigged together in cities like Philadelphia and New York, influencing each other and laying the groundwork for what we know as modern jazz. Coltrane, who was born in the small town of Hamlet and grew up in High Point, would take jazz even farther "out." The modal and freer sounds he explored in the 1960s drew inspiration from his spiritual roots in North Carolina, but also from African and other world cultures as well. Other jazz artists with North Carolina connections include Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington’s right-hand man, composer, and arranger for many years, who called Hillsborough his second home. Among his memorable compositions: “Take the ‘A’ Train”, “Lush Life,” and “Satin Doll.” The state lays claim to pianist Dr. Billy Taylor of CBS’s Sunday Morning and NPR’s Jazz at the Kennedy Center fame, who has dedicated his life to educating America about its indigenous musical art form. And then there's the unique song stylist that is Nina Simone, who was reared in Tryon and attended school in Asheville.
