NOTE: For all those wishing to reach me, unfortunately my e-mail is down at the moment, however that will be corrected in early July as well as some updates to the website and correction of broken links.
Here at Nic's JavaScript Page, we do things a little differently than the competition. Unlike other other JavaScript pages that try to junk their examples full of useless code, we prefer to make our codes as small as possible. This makes the code easier to manipulate and learn from. We have had many e-mails from people who taught themselves JavaScript just by looking at our examples. Also unlike the competition, we only like to have one or two of a certain type of script. This helps the viewer find the code he wants faster. Come in and look at all the unique examples we have to offer here, categorized by subject. To get an e-mail once new scripts come out, join our newsletter . If you still want more, look at some of the other pages created by NicNet (bottom left).

This new Cookbook provides the answers. After reading thousands of forum threads over the years, author and scripting pioneer Danny Goodman has compiled a list of problems that frequently vex scripters of various experience levels. He has now applied state-of-the-art ECMA and W3C DOM standards and used best practices to create this extensive collection of practical recipes that can bring your web pages to life. JavaScript: The Definitive Guide JavaScript is a powerful, object-based scripting language; JavaScript programs can be embedded directly in HTML web pages. When combined with the Document Object Model (DOM) defined by a web browser, JavaScript allows you to create Dynamic HTML content and interactive client-side web applications. JavaScript syntax is based on the popular programming languages C, C++, and Java, which makes it familiar and easy to learn for experienced programmers. At the same time, JavaScript is an interpreted scripting language, providing a flexible, forgiving programming environment in which new programmers can learn.

Learning Java,
Lightweight Scripting for Java
BeanShell 2.0 beta 1 Released!
With version 2.0 BeanShell becomes a fully Java compatible scripting language. BeanShell is now capable of interpreting ordinary Java source and loading .java source files from the class path. BeanShell scripted classes are fully typed and appear to outside Java code and via reflective inspection as ordinary classes. However their implementation is fully dynamic and they may include arbitrary BeanShell scripts in their bodies, methods, and constructors. Users may now freely mix loose, unstructured BeanShell scripts, method closures, and full scripted classes. Please see the announcement for details and known bugs in the initial release.
BeanShell Support in Ant 1.5 and IBM Bean Scripting Framework 2.3
With version 1.5 Ant now provides explicit support for BeanShell as a pluggable scripting language via the BSF. Ironically, as of version 2.3 BSF now adds BeanShell support by registering it as one of its "well known" scripting languages. This means that you can use BeanShell in Ant 1.5 and also in any BSF aware application with BSF 2.3 (confusing enough?)

  • The Genius of Java Simple Types and Objects - The Right Balance Memory Management Through Garbage Collection A Wonderfully Simple Multithreading Model ... The Applet, and The Continuing Revolution
  • The Genius of Java ( Page 1 of 9 ) In this first chapter from the book The Art of Java by Herbert Schildt and James Holmes, the authors highlight certain features of the Java programming language that separate it from other languages. The chapter also covers: memory management, Java's built-in support for multithreading, Java's approach to exceptions as compared to C++, Java's support of polymorphism, and how bytecode enables Java's "Write Once, Run Anywhere" ability and provides security. (ISBN 0-07-222971-3, McGraw-Hill/Osborne, 2003). History in the large view is mirrored on a smaller scale by the history of programming. Just as the first societies sprang from simple beginnings, so too did programming. Just as great civilizations rose, flourished, and declined, so too have programming languages. Yet, throughout the rise and fall of nations, mankind progressed. In similar fashion, as each new language replaced its predecessor, the ongoing refinement of programming proceeded. Throughout history, there have been pivotal events, such as the fall of the Roman Empire, the invasion of Britain in 1066, or the first nuclear explosion, which transformed the world. The same is true for programming languages, albeit on a smaller scale. For example, the invention of FORTRAN changed forever the way that computers would be programmed. Another such pivotal event was the creation of Java.

    A Beginner's Guide to JavaScript
    What is JavaScript?
Javascript can be thought of as an extension to HTML which allows authors to incorporate some functionality in their web pages. So now, whenever the user presses the SUBMIT button, you don't necessarily have to invoke a cgi script to do the processing. If it is something simple, you can do the processing locally using Javascript and give back the results. Javascript can also be used in a number of ways to spice up your page.
    Who is the beginner?
No, it's not you. It's me. By the title, all I meant was that this is my Guide to Javascript. I have just started studying Javascript and this is my way of doing it. Just thought I'd warn you... As I learn Javascript, I'll be constantly improving this web site. So if you don't find anything of interest here now, please do come back later.
    Whom this page is for
In its present form, this page is for the absolute beginner to Javascript. Some knowledge of HTML is assumed. For more information on HTML, check out my Links Page. Further on, familiarity with C++ will also be useful since these two are somewhat similar in syntax and also because Javascript is Object Oriented. The Tips page contain some very simple but useful Javascript samples along with explanations. You can use them without knowing much about Javascript. On the

avaScript and CGI scripts are the easy way to make your site come alive. Whether it's a guestbook, a bulletin board, messages in your browser's status bar or interactive pop-ups, they're all easily accomplished with one or the other. Best of all, there are now many superb sites on the Internet which allow you to cut and paste pre-written, tested scripts for free. So you don't need to be a rocket scientist to use them. J avaScript is well-supported by browsers (because they invented it) but most early versions of Internet Explorer have varying degrees of problems with it. This means that if you use JavaScripts extensively you should test, test, test! (Microsoft finally got their JavaScript support almost right with Explorer 5.0, so this problem should eventually disappear). C GI scripts however (which are most commonly written in the Perl language) will work equally well with both browsers. This is because they're executed on the web server, rather than in the browser when a web page loads.

    JavaScript, Part II
    Function Basics
    by
    William Bontrager
Unlike many programming languages, JavaScript can be written in bits and pieces. It may be interspersed with HTML code on a web page so long as the JavaScript conforms to its own programming language rules. Understanding and using JavaScript programming language rules is the purpose of this article series. Here is what this part of the tutorial covers:
    Using/Calling functions

How to make your own functions

A JavaScript function is a block of code (one or more lines of JavaScript code together in a set) with a name. The JavaScript language includes many functions, called built-in functions. You can also make your own functions.
    ~~ Using/Calling functions
When you call a function, the browser runs the lines of code in the function. Whether the function is built-in or one you made, call it in your program by typing the function's name. A function name always includes a pair of parenthesis at the end. There might or might not be something between the parenthesis. If you want to send data to a function when you call it, put the data between the parenthesis. For example

    Authoring JavaScript
JavaScript is a compact, object-based scripting language for developing client and server Internet applications. JavaScript statements can be embedded directly in an HTML page. These statements can recognize and respond to user events such as mouse clicks, form input, and page navigation. For example, you can write a JavaScript function to verify that users enter valid information into a form. Without any network transmission, an HTML page with embedded JavaScript can interpret the entered text and alert the user with a message dialog if the input is invalid. Or you can use JavaScript to perform an action (such as play an audio file, execute an applet, or communicate with a plug-in) in response to the user opening or exiting a page.
