An interesting aspect of Japanese mythology is that it explains the origin of the current royal family, and gave them deity until recently, the end of the Pacific War. Mainstream Japanese myths, as generally recognized today, are based on the Kojiki and some complementary books. The Kojiki is the oldest recognized book of myths, legends, and history of Japan. The Shintoshu explains origins of Japanese deities from a Buddhism position. The Hotuma Tutaye records a substantially different version of mythology. NINIGI Grandson of Amaterasu, sent to rule the earth, the ancestor of all the Japanese emperors. Back to World Mythology Home Page.
http://users.aol.com/purging/ptp2/japanese.htm
AJI-SUKI-TAKA-HI-KONE One of several thunder gods. Born noisy, he grew up even noisier, and so they carry him up and down a ladder to quiet him. That is why you can hear him receding and approaching. AMA-NO-UZUME Fertility goddess. A companion of Ninigi, she performed a bawdy dance hoping to entice the sun out of hiding. This dance symbolizes the planting of seed which waits for the sun come after winter. AMATERASU Sun goddess, ruler of the heavens. When her great enemy, the storm god Susa-No-Wo, destroyed her fine palace, Amaterasu went to hide in a cave. The other gods used all their magical tricks to get her to come out, to no avail. In her absence, darkness and demons ruled the earth until Ama-No-Usume lured Amaterasu out of the cave with a trick. With a comical and obscene dance, he made the gods gathered at the mouth of the cave laugh. When Amaterasu asked what was going on, Ama-No-Uzume replied that they had found another and better sun goddess. Amaterasu peeped out of her cave and saw her own reflection in a mirror which Ama-No-Uzume had hung on a nearby tree. Fascinated, Ameratasu drew a little closer for a better look, and the gods grabbed her and hauled her out. AMATSU MIKABOSHI "August Star of Heaven." God of evil.

Sailor Moon and Japanese Mythology
From the article: Some of the references in Sailormoon refer to ancient epics and great characters of
Japanese history, but there are also a number of references to children’s’ stories and
traditions of love and courtship. For instance, ‘Tsuki no Usagi’ means ‘Rabbit of the
Moon’, a reference from Japan’s version to the man on the moon. On a clear night, one
can see a rabbit on the moon pounding mochi, a sticky yet firm paste made from rice. In
some stories from both Japanese and Chinese cultures, the mochi feeds a young maiden
banished to the moon. The red ribbon that Sailorvenus wears in her hair also has mythic significance. Like many
asian cultures, the Japanese believe that lovers are predestined to meet, and a red ribbon
connects future couples. This ribbon, of course, is invisible to humans, but spirits and
gods can observe the interconnections between fated pairs. This is particularly significant
for Sailorvenus as she is the Senshi of love. . . . “Any match ups between two people not connected by the ribbon are destined to fail. A

The Japanese mythology collected in the Japanese classics such as Kojiki (The Record of Ancient Matters), Nihonshoki ( The Chronicles of Japan), Kogo Shuki (The Commentaries on Ancient Words) and Fudoki (Local Gazetteers) transmit a dynamic portrayal of the birth of the land, the genealogy of the deities, and the establishment of the nation and its subjection to peaceful rule. Within the myths can be found deified nature spirits, noble heroes, and ancestral deities, including numerous deities of both male and female gender. From within epic dramas woven around those deities, the Japanese people have learned how to live as human beings, and thus been entrusted with a core of faith.
The festivals offered in thanks to the deities for their bounty, and within which people share their joy with others, have also provided an excellent source of edification for the lives of the Japanese people.

Otogi hopes to make Japanese folklore interesting. You think we are kidding? Check out the screenshots, pessimists!
Posted by Chris Barnett - Xbox - UK and Europe
From Software have been busy working on a game based upon Japanese legends and folklore. Otogi is the story of one man in ancient Japan who encounters various aspects of Japanese folklore as he fends off an army of demons.
The game is a 3D action game where all the scenery and objects can be destroyed, which is rather bold considering that it boasts 25 massive levels.
To people outside of Japan this game may sound a little average, but look on it as a Japanese version of Brothers Grimm tales and you will understand the appeal to Japanese people. For the rest of the world, it can serve as an ideal way of showing how interesting these stories are when it is released in September.
As the mythology of Japan is so colourful, the graphics are promised to live up to the subject matter. And having seen a Japanese version of the game running, we can say (with slight controversy) that it is the prettiest Xbox game yet. To see for yourself, check out our new screens below.

Please wait for a while! [The Note of Myths] 'Izumo and Yamato' Ohkuni-nushi succeeded to the political power (which Susano-o established) in Izumo area. (Ohkuni-nushi was a Susano-o's son-in-low.) I think Izumo area was very close to Yamato area. But,I think the power of Yamato in mythological times is not the roots of Yamato Imperial Court. According to KOJIKI,Ohkuni-nushi choosed the God of Mt.Miwa as a partner in founding a country after Sukuna-bikona left him. Then,I looked up Mt.Miwa. Mt.Miwa has been a beautiful holy mountain and a symbol of Yamato area. Ancient document says there was a three imporant rocky points in Mt.Miwa. From top point,it was called 'Okutsu','Nakatsu',and 'Hentsu'. In each point,Ohmono-nushi,Ohkuni-nushi,and Sukuna-bikona were buried. This matter also means Izumo and Yamato were very closely related.
