Courses about China, Japan, Korea, and East Asia are offered throughout the University. These range from courses designed primarily for non-majors to advanced courses for majors and graduate students. Each quarter a list of these courses is prepared and made available on the Internet. East Asia courses offered at the University of Washington HOME TOP Undergraduate Programs At the Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS), students can major in Asian Studies with an East Asia country option (China, Japan, or Korea) or in the International Studies (General) Program with an East Asia track. Those majoring outside JSIS can choose one of three East Asia minors (China Studies, Japan Studies, or Korea Studies). Students who wish to focus on the study of East Asian language and/or literature can earn a major or minor through the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. No formal East Asia tracks or programs are available outside of JSIS and the Department of Asian Languages and Literature. Undergraduates with strong interests in East Asia and committed to a discipline such as political science, art history, economics, or history can declare a major in those departments and take East Asia-related courses at the same time. Students interested in a specific discipline should contact an undergraduate advisor in that department to learn more about specific departmental degree requirements and East Asia-related course offerings.

Language Programs Abroad Books, audiocassettes and classroom drills can all help you acquire the fundamentals of another language. But if you want to speak a language fluently, fully comprehend it in written form and be coherent when using it to write, nothing compares to being immersed in the culture where the language is used regularly and surrounded by people who speak, read and write it daily. Should you spend time in another country where the native tongue is foreign to your ears, you will likely pick up a few colloquialisms and develop a rudimentary lingua franca. Yet without formal training in the language, practising phrases and words won't likely lead to fluency in it. Several educational institutions and organizations around the world have designed linguistic curricula that combine the ideas of cultural immersion by living abroad with the classroom-style academic model of immersion. japanese language programs were recognized by the Foundation for the Promotion of japanese Education; 1991 The Kobe YMCA japanese language School was founded.
http://www.kobeymca.or.jp/japanese/kymca04.htm
Welcome to The YMCA
Language is a wonderful tool which we can use to communicate with people from other cultures. In doing so we can understand new ways of living and thinking thus enriching our lives in the present andfuture. By ojfTering Japanese language education we hope to provide students with the means to broaden their world view and hence create peace in this world we all share.
The Japanese language is becoming internationalized. The Kobe YMCA established a full-time program of Japanese as aforeign language as a tool of communication among their varying cultures. Through formal studies, jield trips and interacting with the members of the YMCA students learn not only the Japanese language, but also come to understand the culture and customs that underlie the language.
Our shool's history
The YMCA was.founded by young men living in London, England, in the 19th century at the time of the Industrial Revolution. Presently, the YMCA movement is active in over 120 countries with approximately 30 million members. Since its foundation in 1886, the history of the Kobe YMCA extends back over 100 years.
The roots of our present day Japanese language program can be traced back to the foundatilon of the Kobe YMCA English language programs. In 1950, the Kobe YMCA initiated a program of Japanese as aforeign language. The program soon developed from a rudimentary tutorial type of program into a level based class system. In 1983, the Kobe YMCA College Japanese Department was founded. This was followed in 1991 by the foundation of the Kobe YMCA Japanese Language School. In 1995, Kobe city was attacked by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and gotten big damages. However with warm help and support, ou, school presently provides Japanese language courses for a variety of students from all over the world.
