http://www.us-japan.org/jassw/programs/jis.htm
Since 1994 Japan in the Schools
Japan In The Schools represents one of the Japan-America Society's major efforts in offering educational outreach programs to the Puget Sound region. The Japan In A Suitcase presentations, aimed at elementary school audiences, and the Japanese Language and Culture Visits, for high school age students, have been extremely well received since their inception in the 1994-1995 school year. Within these pages, you can find out more about Japan In The Schools, volunteer for the program, and view the Kentaro curriculum. Japan in a Suitcase Program Japan in a Suitcase presents a day in the life of a Japanese child using visual aids and authentic items from Japan to make the experience as real as possible. Common items used by Japanese children in everyday life - at home and in school - are brought to the school in a suitcase and used to show how a young Japanese boy spends a typical day, from morning to night. Pairs of volunteers make the presentations: English speakers facilitate the lesson and lead discussion, while their Japanese partners provide exposure to the language and act as native experts. Japanese Language and Culture Visits This project is to provide a total-immersion Japanese language experience to secondary school students. Near-native to native fluency is required in oral and written Japanese language.

Japanese and Chinese Language Programs - Introduction Our faculty for the Japanese and Chinese language programs includes three professors: an American-born professor who teaches the introductory courses in both Japanese and Chinese; a native speaker from Japan to teach the upper-level Japanese language courses; a native speaker from China to teach the upper-level Chinese courses. We feel that perhaps a non-native speaker with considerable teaching experience is better equipped to help the students in the early stages of learning these languages so different from their own, and that in the upper-level courses it is of great benefit to the students to have a native speaker with whom to refine their spoken language skills. In recent years many graduates of the Japanese language program at Calvin have been accepted by the Japanese government to teach English in junior high schools and high schools in Japan through the prestigious JET Program. Contracts are for a year and may be renewed for up to three years. We have had 17 graduates of our program who have been accepted to teach English in Japan in recent years through the JET Program. We also have had numerous graduates who have taught or are teaching English at universities throughout China. The mission of our program in Chinese and Japanese languages mirrors the mission of Calvin College as a whole. We seek to help our students transform the world through Christian love and service. Our language classes are designed to provide the students with the knowledge of the language and the appreciation of the culture they need in order to better understand and communicate with the peoples of Japan, China, Taiwan, and Singapore. We pray that this interaction will help our graduates to serve as a bridge between our culture and that of East Asia, to help foster peace and mutual understanding, and to spread Christ's love in the world.

Japanese and Chinese Language Programs - Career Opportunities Teaching Opportunities Abroad: Japan Teaching Opportunities Abroad: China Students who have studied Chinese at Calvin can find a job teaching English at a university or a private academy in China through one of several organizations with which Calvin has a long-standing relationship, including ELI (English Language Institute) of San Dimas, California. For over a decade now, several Calvin graduates have taken advantage of these programs to teach in China. Through the English Language Institute in China, graduates may teach English at a university in China for two years and simultaneously earn a Master's in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). There are currently seven Calvin graduates teaching English in China. They help to better the understanding of Chinese students of both the English language and of western culture and belief systems, and in so doing create much good will toward Americans and Canadians. Students who are still enrolled at Calvin may go to China in the summers through organizations like ELI. After an orientation and training period in California, participating students spend five weeks teaching English to and having fun with Chinese junior high and high school students in various parts of China. As many as a dozen Calvin students have already participated in summer programs like this in China.
