CHOOSING THE ROUTE TO STUDY IN JAPAN (4) Japanese Language School in Japan In case of the route (c) to study in Japan it is difficult to study for entrance examination for a Japanese university when living in a foreign country for the first time. Therefore, Japanese language educational institutions have a lot of impact on the students who want to study in Japan. 1. Japanese Language School Foreign students who comes to Japan as self supporting, can enter either Japanese Language Schools which are accredited by the Association of International Education Japan (Kourin Build. 2F 1-13-19, Kita-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, Phone +81-3-5386-0080) or Japanese language programs of universities. All of the schools are listed in the "list of Japanese Language Educational Institutions" which is published by the Association of International Education Japan. You can look up the list in Japanese embassies or consulates abroad. More than half of the Japanese language schools are concentrated in Tokyo and over 60% of the foreign students who go to Japanese language schools are also in Tokyo. (1) Full time or part time?

Home For Prospective Students Japanese-language Schools Why Study in Japan? Selecting a School Student Categories Immigration Procedures ... Japanese-language Schools Necessary Items Personal Accounts When a student goes abroad to study, the student normally gains admission to a college or university before departing his or her country. Ideally, you will leave for Japan after gaining admission to an institute of higher learning. However, the general case of studying in Japan begins with a student first enrolling in a Japanese language-institute. The student will study Japanese and other subjects for one to two years and then take a university entrance examination before enrolling in a university. Therefore, the choice of a good Japanese-language institute becomes extremely important for students wishing to enter Japanese university undergraduate or graduate courses in the future.
The two types of Japanese-language institutes listed below for foreign students who wish to go on to a university, are considered trustworthy:

This Japan Digest was made possible through the generous support of the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Building a Japanese Language Program from the Bottom Up
Linda Worman

September 1998 The past fifteen years have seen the establishment of a variety of less-commonly taught "critical language" programs to teach those languages the U.S. government perceives to be of strategic national importance or that students deem as necessary for career development in a global economy. Specifically, Japanese language study experienced a remarkable 94.9 percent growth between 1985 and 1990. The success of new programs depends on a number of specific factors which ultimately determine survival or extinction. Building student interest and a learning foundation at the elementary/middle school level can be a key element to establishing and maintaining a successful language program.

If you want to study at Waseda...
...please don't send me e-mail!
Waseda is a big university, with many different schools that operate fairly independently. I used to teach at the School of Law, and I now teach at the School of International Liberal Studies, but I don't know about other schools at Waseda at all. I can't advise people who want to study theater or history, for example, at Waseda. However, I can give some general advice and links to information available on Waseda's web site.
  • First, and most important, there is no way to "apply to Waseda". Students apply to and enter a particular school or program within the university.
  • Next, you need to consider your language ability. Most classes taught at Waseda are taught in Japanese, so to enter most of the schools and programs listed here, you will need the ability to speak, read, and write in Japanese. Having said that, most schools have special entrance procedures for foreign students. The web page Programs for International Students has links to English home pages of the various schools and programs. You might also want to check out the English version of the Waseda bulletin to find out more about the various schools of Waseda. Then go directly to the page of the school you are interested in for more information.

Japanese Language Programs in Tokyo
Author: Andy Clark
Written: 15 Mar 2002 If you are interested in learning Japanese, total immersion in the Japanese culture is the best way to improve your ability to understand and communicate in the language. This page is written for those people that are interested in attending a Japanese language school in Japan. While there are many schools to choose from, I happen to live in Tokyo so this page is limited to my experience at Japanese language schools in Tokyo.
Before You Attend
If you are not already living in Japan, then you will need a visa in order to enter Japan for the purpose of studying Japanese. Some schools offer (for an additional charge) a service to provide you the necessary visa for study. [Since I entered the country with a work visa, I am not sure if you are allowed to use the typical 3-month tourist visa to attend a Japanese language school. So don't count on it.] If you need a student visa, plan far in advance of the date that you want to attend the school. The deadline for applying for a student visa is at least several months before the start of classes. Also realize that learning Japanese is not easy; it takes a lot of work to master the language. [And I can't say that I'm anywhere
