Welcome
Since its beginning in 1970, the Japanese School at Middlebury has played an important role in the growth and development of the field of Japanese Studies in this country. Many students who have completed our program have used the language skills they acquired to build successful careers in a wide variety of disciplines in academics and the professions Now, at the beginning of a new century, the demand for people with proficiency in the Japanese language is increasing, and the need for immersion programs like the Japanese School at Middlebury is greater than ever. There are more native speakers of Japanese than there are of such commonly studied languages as French. Japan's economy, in spite of a decade of slow growth and political drift, is the second largest in the world. Japan is a leader in information technology, and it will play a vital role in coming decades in the ongoing process of economic, political, and cultural globalization The importance of the study of Japanese, however, is based on more than economic statistics or the impact of hi-tech on our daily lives. Japan possesses one of the world's greatest cultural heritages. Its traditions in literature, the arts, philosophy, and history are rich, complex, and every bit the equal of Western achievements. The rewards of studying the fascinating cultures of Japan are not simply material, but intrinsic

LANGUAGE ROOM
Japanese is spoken by over 120,000,000 people, most of whom all live in Japan. In this room you can learn to read, write and speak Japanese so you can communicate with all these people. There is even an on-line dictionary so you can you can look up words that you don't know or you want to use. Even if you do not have a browser normally capable of viewing Japanese, you will not have any problems here. All of the Japanese characters (letters) in this room have been created with .gif graphics. The sound files have all been created using the .au file format. If you have any problems hearing the sound files, please look at the sound help writeup . If you are serious about studying Japanese, we recommend that you copy any Japanese prints or sound files that you want here in the Japanese Language Room onto your own hard disk and use them to study with. This approach is best because files load much faster from your own hard disk than they do coming off the Internet. Please remember though, that you can't use these files for any other purpose other than your own private studying without asking us first. The material in different sections of the Japanese Language Room is updated on different schedules. When you enter each individual section, you can see how often that section's pages are updated. All of us kids here at Kids' Japan like to hear how kids around the world use our material to learn Japanese. Please send us an
