What's in a Word
In 1997-98, I wrote a monthly column for Japan Currents magazine, with a Japanese and English-speaking readership - "What's in a Word" - with some light linguistic musings on both English and Japanese topics, many of which I've posted here. They were published with Japanese translations, which I hope to have up here soon, as well: My (Japanese-related) "What's in a Word" columns in Japan Currents Sancho Wasan " by Rennyo (1415-99), hossu (head abbot) of Honganji, Kyoto] During the years I've studied Japanese, I've compiled numerous lists about segments of the language. One of my favorites is a large collection of numerical classifiers (see below), but there are also expression lists of various types, compound verbs, etc., etc., which will appear here as time goes by. This website is a continually growing collection of short "lecture notes", featuring a poem or passage from Japanese or Chinese classics, presented in original script (encoded in euc-JP), and in English translation. I have reorganized this website recently, and added lots of new content. I regrouped the poems in a separate poetry section, while most of the new stuff is related to Oriental philosophy, ranging from Confucius and Lao Tse to premodern Zen masters and martial art classics.

You can display , or Japanese, on your computer in some ways. With appropriate software, you can type and edit Japanese as well (i.e. no specific hardware required). Note that the latest OSs such as Windows 98/2000/XP and MacOS 8/9/X should have the built-in functionality to provide world wide language support (e.g., install all Japanese supports with English version of Windows 2000, and set 'default language' to Japanese).
