I haven't had much time to update entries to the site recently (and many apologies for my general e-mail unresponsiveness). However, I am so excited about this tidbit that I had to make a quick update my first print piece is now available, and it's in Japanese. The book Oshii Mamoru-ron: Memento Mori contains my essay "Amerika-kara Mita Oshii Mamoru" (pp. 212-220). Now available at finer Japanese book retailers everywhere. Or so I'm guessing.

Japan Introduction Back to Top Japan, constitutional monarchy in East Asia, comprising four large islands, as well as the Ryukyu Islands and more than 1,000 lesser adjacent islands. It is bounded on the north by the Sea of Okhotsk, on the east by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea, and on the west by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea). In Japanese the country's name is Dai ("great") Nihon or Nippon ("origin of the Sun"), hence, Land of the Rising Sun. The Japanese islands extend in an irregular crescent from the island of Sakhalin (Russia) to the island of Formosa, or Taiwan. Japan proper consists of the large islands of Hokkaido, the northernmost; Honshu, the largest, called the mainland; Shikoku; and Kyushu, the southernmost. The combined area of these islands is about 362,000 sq km (140,000 sq mi). The total area of Japan is 377,750 sq km (145,850 sq mi). Tokyo is Japan's capital and largest city. Your browser does not support inline frames or is currently configured not to display inline frames. Q. What does the name of the famous hamburger chain, 'MOS Burger' mean?

A. The 'MOS' in 'MOS burger stands for 'Mountain, Ocean, Sun'. According to the official MOS Burger web site, the mountain, ocean, and sun in the name symbolise the company's "infinite love" of both humankind and nature. MOS Burger's love of people and nature is "Grand and noble like a mountain", "Possessed of a spirit as deep and wide as the ocean", and filled with a "passion that, like the heat of the sun, never burns out."And you thought you were just getting a hamburger. If you can read Japanese, check out the MOS Burger Home Page at: http://www.mos.co.jp/united/index.htm Q. How come Japanese people slurp Japanese and Chinese noodles but not spaghetti?
A. Jens Jenson was kind enough to write and inform us that:
1) Noodles (SOBA and RAMEN) should be eaten while VERY hot in order to get the full flavour. When slurping, Japanese

Japanese Incense
The Journey of Japanese Incense
It begins under the flower of peace, before the fall of the plum blossoms, before monks burning incense in Japanese temples, before the rising scents from scented kimono sleeves mixed with the fragrant incense of natural pine, cedar, lavender, and the flowers of the sun. The art of Japanese incense making has long been a tribute to nature itself. One of the great Awaseko of early Japan was called "Baika" which is Japanese for plum. Perhaps one way to look at the connection formed between nature, incense, and humanity is through poetry. . . I breathe in the cool incense smoke from the metal brazier,
While thinking about a poem for my dear friend Lu Wa.
My sandalwood-hearted companion spits out plum blossoms of smoke,
Looking like the cloudy fog of the other world.
Perhaps it's the soul of my friend the old mountain man
In the smoke's dense patterns? - Kan Po, in memoriam (undated) Surely the connection between poetry and incense comes from the connection of poetry and nature . . . If the maple leaves
On Ogura mountain
Could only have hearts
