Over 50 years later, I am reminded of so many moments in history by the occurrences of the present. If you listen closely to crowds, you will hear the occasional slurs thrown at Major League Baseball player Ichiro Suzuki because he just couldn’t make contact with the 3-2 fastball. The Asian and Pacific Islander Population in the U.S. ERIC Digest. by Schwartz, Wendy There are an estimated 12 million Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIAs) in the United States, or about 4 percent of the total population (compared with African Americans, at 12 percent, and Latinos, at 11 percent). APIAs comprise one of the fastest growing groups in the nation; over the last decade there was a 69 percent growth in that population, and their number is expected to reach 20 million by 2020. Most APIAs reside in urban areas, but the differences among their various groups are often greater than their similarities. High fertility rates and the immigration of APIAs are major reasons for the anticipated increase in their number. Children are becoming an even more significant proportion of the APIA population, and will constitute an increasingly larger segment of the public school population. Schools will need to become knowledgeable about the unique qualities of APIA students and their families and respond to their special educational and social needs. This digest, drawn from the most recent statistics collected, including 2000 Census data where available, synthesizes information on Asian and Pacific Islander American children and their families. The digest's goal is twofold: (1) to help educators working with this population better understand their backgrounds and living conditions, in order to provide the children with effective educational and other services and to communicate effectively and sensitively with their families; and (2) to help policy makers and program developers equitably allocate resources for these services based on accurate information about local concentrations of APIAs. A bibliography of the sources used here appears at the end of the digest for those interested in obtaining more data.

Advertise with us Model for us Write for us Add your profile ... Send pictures The right approach to romancing a Japanese/Asian By Alex Brown, December 11, 2003 I found your web page very helpful. Even though I have only dated Asian guys, I found a lot of similarities with what you said is typical of Japanese guys and of Japanese relationships.
T he guys I've dated love rosy cheeks, absolutely ADORE white skin (without freckles, they HATE freckles!), love big eyes, blonde hair, blue eyes, like white girls to wear their hair up, showing off our neck and face, and they LOVE feet. Especially slender feet, they are so sexy. I don't know WHY...I am not sure what makes feet so sexy. They seem to have nothing to do with sex. But since Asians consider feet to be somewhat of a sex object, wearing anklets or nail polish or toe rings or anything to pull the eyes to the feet is a way to attract guys. Although my boyfriend is only 23, he is a little old fashioned. He was shocked when he found me putting on toe nail polish. He thought I was a "nicer" girl than that. He thought it was slutty! I did it anyways of course.
A lthough your web page stated that in order to catch a Japanese guy you shouldn't try to act so innocent and shy, I found that he totally ate up my shy and innocent act. But then again, maybe he is just being more old fashioned than normal guys.

Understanding Asian Pacific Americans
By Donna Ray, Asian Pacific American Islander Emphasis Program Manager
Their are over 10 million Asian and Pacific Islanders in the U.S.
They comprise 3.8 percent of the total U.S. population. The number of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States was 1.5 million in 1970, 3.5 million in 1980, 7.3 million in 1990, 9.6 million in 1996, and in February 1998 there were an estimated 10.2 million Asian and Pacific Islanders, comprising 3.8 percent of the total U.S. population. In addition to immigration and natural increase, part of the growth of Asian and Pacific Islanders between 1970 and 1990 reflects changes in the race question on the census form. In the 1990 census the race question was revised to include more groups of people. Collection and processing procedures were also improved.
There is still much to be learned as we work with Asian and Pacific Islanders. As with all cultures and ethnic groups, awareness and understanding can be a key that unlocks the door to a productive relationship between NRCS and the diverse public we serve.

US Asian americans. We take as our point of departure, that the diversity of Asiangroups in America Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, Japanese, Asian Indians
http://www.cetel.org/ancestors_overview.html
Ancestors in the Americas Series Overview Ancestors in America is designed as the first major television series to offer the general public an in-depth historical understanding of one of the fastest growing and least known groups of immigrants in the U.S. Asian Americans. We take as our point of departure, that the diversity of Asian groups in America - Chinese, Filipinos, Koreans, Japanese, Asian Indians, and Southeast Asians - all have fundamental historical experiences in common, both in Asia and in America. To launch Ancestors we start with a 3 part series focusing on the Chinese as the first large Asian immigrant subgroup to settle in the United States. Program 1: Coolies, Sailors, Settlers: Voyage to the New World (completed) Program 2: Chinese in the Frontier West:An American Story
(completed)
Program 3: Crossing the Continent; Crossing the Pacific
(In-progress)
Designed as an open ended 3-part series , additional programs which foreground the other Asian American groups, also within a comparative Asian American perspective, will be produced as funding and support becomes available. A comparative perspective underlies the series as a whole with a variety of questions posed, all of which begin with the fateful fact that Asian Americans were distinctively both immigrant and a racial minority: As immigrants, can the experiences of Asian immigrants be considered just a variant on those of Euro-immigrants? (i.e., do Asian American immigrants follow the familiar formula of initial hardship and social discrimination, yielding to acceptance/assimilation within a lifetime, generation or two, and ultimately, mobility , earned success, and integration as Americans?

Part 3. CROSSING THE CONTINENT, CROSSING THE PACIFIC In Production - 2000 The American people know that the Chinese people built the railroad. And often that's the one and only thing they know. And that's exactly the problem." -Professor Patricia Limerick The third program in the series begins in the 1860s and ends in the 1930s when other key Asian groupsJapanese, Asian Indians, Koreans and Filipinoshave arrived and settled in America, and the second generation of Chinese immigrants is establishing itself. Program 3 starts with a revealing look at the Chinese role and sacrifices in building the western half of the monumental Transcontinental Railroad. Their actual experience is a part of our history which is not commonly known today. Here, the Chinese were 80 - 90% of the workforce and built one of the most difficult parts of the railroad, over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. They were forced to work from sun up to sun down, labor in very dangerous conditions, and sleep in tents in the middle of winter, without any protection against the cold or avalanches which swept whole camps down mountainsides. "That famous picture for the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad where the Golden Spike is about to be hammered in....Many have noted that the Chinese are not there. So you have what seems to be a strange and sad irony that the Chinese did the labor and they're not in the picture."

...Kick $uc's ass!... but unfortunately, it turned out the other way. The Trojan's killed my Bruins, then cut them up into little bitty pieces and had them for lunch on the Coliseum floor. This makes it five straight losses to sc, a very reluctant tip of the hat to them. *grumble, grumble* The Bruins have died. Long live the Bruins... Another season over, another year to look forward to some recuperating. This is truly hard to take year in and year out. But I will be there next year as well. I will be cheering them on, hoping for a great season. With Steve Lavin gone, maybe we'll get 'em in basketball... I can only hope. As my kids know, there are specific rules to renga, and one of them is that one topic cannot extend for three verses. Here, that would be three entries. Well, this weekend, each entry was about the Bruins and their game with sc. So I guess I broke a rule and some of my kids will grade me harshly. That's okay. Grade harshly, grade strictly.

Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
By Emil Guillermo
Here we are, half past May, and I bet no one has come up to you and said, "Happy Asian Pacific American Heritage Month!"
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month? I mean, what is an Asian Pacific American?
I know about this dilemma. I'm one of them.
Many Americans can at least understand what Black History Month is, and even Hispanic Heritage Month. But an APA Month? Does that have anything to do with the American Podiatry Association? Or is that the American Psychiatric Association, perhaps?
The first Asian Americans are said to be Filipinos from Spanish galleons who jumped ship in 1763 and settled along the Louisiana Bayou. But, of course, they were often referred to as "Chinamen," when, in fact, they were "Manilamen."
If you ask the Census for a definition of an Asian Pacific American, it might say, Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Thai, Bangladeshi, Burmese, Indonesian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Tahitian, Tibetan, Fijian. (Go ahead, take a deep breath here.) Nepalese, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Asian Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, Hawaiian, Samoan, Guamanian.
That could be the problem right there.
