Beijing disputes Japan's islands claim
By Willy Wo-Lap Lam
CNN Senior China Analyst
Since the mid-1990s, Japanese coast guard vessels have turned away Chinese and Taiwanese fishing boats from the area Story Tools
(CNN) Beijing has protested Tokyo's move to assert sovereignty over the disputed Senkaku islands, known as the Diaoyu in China, by renting three of the islets from their private owner. Zhang Qiyue, a spokeswoman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the Diaoyu archipelago had been Chinese territory from ancient times. "Any unilateral action that Japan has taken toward these islands is not valid," the official press on Friday quoted Zhang as saying. The Japanese media reported earlier this week that the Japanese government had rented three islands of the Senkaku chain at a cost of $188,300 a year in an apparent attempt to boost Tokyo's claim over the territory. The islands, located between Taiwan and Okinawa, are believed to be rich in oil resources.

TOKYO, Japan (CNN) Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has dissolved the lower house of parliament, paving the way for new elections. The poll is to be held November 9, with the dominant issue likely to be how best to revitalize the world's second-largest economy. Japan has been in an economic trough for a decade, though it has shown signs recently of a pickup in confidence. Riding that upswing, Koizumi is hoping to sweep to victory in the November elections and push through a fresh mandate for reform. Koizumi won a landslide re-election to a second three-year team as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party last month, and the November polls could consolidate his standing as one of the nation's longest-serving leaders.

A descrption of Christianity in Japan would not be complete without including Japan's greatest Christian writer. Here Is Philip Yancey's article about the man and his works that helped inspire the novel "The Jesus I never knew"
ARTICLE: Japan's Faithful Judas, Part 1
Shusaku Endo's struggle to give his faith a Japanese soul.
By Philip Yancey At one point in history, Japan seemed the most fruitful mission field in all
of Asia. Francis Xavier, one of the seven original Jesuits, landed there in
1549 and spent two years establishing a church. Within a generation, the
number of Christians had swelled to 300,000. Xavier called Japan "the delight
of my heart ...the country in the Orient most suited to Christianity." As that century came to an end, however, the shoguns' revulsion over the
divisions among Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch Christians led to a change in
policy. The shoguns expelled the Jesuits, required that all Christians
renounce their faith and register as Buddhists, and began to harass any who disobeyed. The first executions soon followed, and the age of Japanese

Japan's former comfort women demand justice
    April 17, 1997
Web posted at: 5:50 p.m. EDT (2150 GMT) From Correspondent May Lee HONG KONG (CNN) From the streets of Seoul to the streets of Manila, and even in the heart of Tokyo, Asian women are angrily demanding justice for crimes committed against them 50 years ago. They say they were taken by invading Japanese soldiers during World War II and made the sexual slaves of Japan's Imperial Army. In 1993, Japan officially admitted that thousands of women were forced to be prostitutes, or "comfort women" during World War II. The government apologized for the war crimes, and vowed to include the comfort women issue in new junior high school textbooks for the first time. The new books came out in April, to the dismay of nationalists like Nobukatsu Fujioka, a man who says all women who say they were sex slaves are liars. Fujioka is leading the Society for New History Textbooks, a group pushing to abolish any mention of comfort women and other war crimes in schoolbooks. "The comfort women issue is basically a massive deception," Fujioka said. "It's true that there were comfort women, but they weren't recruited by force, or held as sex slaves. They were prostitutes, and as prostitutes, they made money. They were hired by brokers and when their contracts were up, they were able to go back to their own countries."

The Bottom Line Discussion on animation programs. Advantages, disadvantages, and the how-tos for the management.
We have been exporting a lot of animation products to all over the world. If you see the animation where characters' facial expressions are richer and more elaborated, you are probably watching Japanese animation, though not limited to. The majority of Japanese animation comes to the US on video, which is off the topic. On this review, I use "pokemon" and "sailor moon" as the examples, and introduce you what is discussed in Japan, the animation kingdom.
Let me start with the descriptions on these two animation. Assuming you have already watched the program, I describe their meanings behind the screen in both the nasty and the friendly senses. (If you haven't watch them, I recommend you to check. They are one type of Japanese subculture.)
    Nasty Descriptions

If you want to be a master (read an experienced adult), you have to train your fellows so that they fight for you at the risk of their lives. The requirement for the master is the control over your fellows. The true master should be able to beat up all the competitors. The bad (read tough) competitors always come back with creative and innovative plots. Thus the master can use any types of weapons, and drive them down to the hell.
