Who Is This Guy Bill?
And other odds and ends.... What kind of writing about Japan does not include a castle? Well, here I am at Hirosaki Jo, one of the last original castles in Japan (Many of the others are replicas, rebuilt after being destroyed for various reasons, including fires that resulted from lightning strikes. This photo was taken after days of riding in the rain in Hokkaido and Northern Honshu. If you like wood, you will love the structure and construction of the Japanese Castle. A tremendous contrast to the stone castles of Europe, for sure. Japanese castles have a kind of warmth about them...at least for this hobbyist woodworker. Do try to visit one or two; they are well worth the modest entrance fee. One of my favorites is Matsumoto Jo (castle), a must see in my book! If you are touring in the area of Matsumoto, do spend an hour and tour this castle. You will not regret it! Himeji also has a must see castle... As a brief introduction, let me just say that I lived in Japan in the 70’s, that both my children were born there, and that I met my wife (who is Japanese) on the Trans-Siberian Railroad in ‘69, heading towards Europe. So I guess I am not a youngster anymore...I just act and feel like one! I hope the following short introductions to aspects of bicycle touring in Japan will be of some interest and help to fellow bicycle tourists that are thinking about seeing, feeling and enjoying the "Japanese experience." Touring in Japan is unique and special.

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical is to buy rival Fujisawa Pharmaceutical in a deal worth $7.76 billion. It will create Japan's No.2 drug maker, signalling a shake-up in the nation's $50 billion drug market. Analysts say the deal, the biggest between non-financial firms in Japan in nearly three years, makes sense, giving the firms greater worldwide reach and boosting their research and development clout in a fiercely competitive industry. "Each company has been enjoying steady profit growth alone, but we concluded that the merger would be the best solution for both firms to survive and grow further as a global player," Yamanouchi President Toichi Takenaka told a news conference Tuesday. Yamanouchi is paying a 2.2 percent premium for Fujisawa, based on current share prices.

Chinese worker dies from WWII gas
HONG KONG, China (CNN) Beijing has stepped up an attack on Tokyo's "re-militarization" even as Japan's defense chief is visiting the Chinese capital on a fence-mending trip. The Chinese state media have been running numerous articles criticizing alleged efforts by Tokyo to boost its defense forces and to change the country's pacifist constitution. The official People's Daily Web site on Monday carried an article slamming Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's intention to complete the constitutional revision process by 2005. Commentator Sun Jianhe indicated that Koizumi wanted to change Japan's self-defense force into a full-fledged army that could be deployed overseas. "This shows Japan's militaristic ambitions," wrote Sun, adding that Koizumi needed the support of right-wing political forces to win re-election later this year.

Gengo Gengo had been widely used in the region of East Asia over thousands of years since its creation by Emperor Bu in B.C. 140 during Han Dynasty China. In the case of Japan, the first Gengo was officially created in A.D.645 through a significant political shift called “Taika Reform”. From the Asuka era until the end of the Edo era, it was common that emperors and empresses held multiple-Gengo during their ruling periods in accordance with changes from traditional, political or natural aspects. However, after the famous the Meiji restoration, the system was arranged so that each emperor has only one Gengo from his (or her currently revival of status of empress being considered) coronation until his death. Today, Japan is the only country in the world that still enjoys this Gengo system. Japan's current Gengo, Heisei period is believed to be the 125 th Gengo when counted from the mythological first emperor in Japan, Jinmu-Tenno. It is in the year of 15th which is equal to 2003 in western calendar.

Early iron in China, Korea, and Japan
Points for discussion at the Roundtable, "Korean excavations of iron armour: Political and technological implications for protohistoric East Asia", organised by Dr. Gina Barnes at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies, Los Angeles, 25-28 March 1993. This Web version includes only the most important of the Chinese characters. Note that some of the statements made here have been superseded by later research. See my article, "The earliest use of iron in China" , soon to be published. Donald B. Wagner I was originally invited here as discussant for Dr. Dong-Suk Yoon's presentation of technical metallurgical matters. Since he is unable to attend, I shall have to base this discussion on published papers by him and others.
    Early iron in China
Huang Zhanyue (1976) has shown very convincingly that the smelting of iron in China began in the south. In my forthcoming book (Wagner 1993, chapters 2-3; see also 1987a) I have reviewed Huang Zhanyue's evidence, together with other evidence which has come to light later, and suggested that the first use of iron in China was in the southern "barbarian" state of Wu in southern Jiangsu and parts of adjacent provinces. The earliest iron artefacts are from the early fifth century B.C., and artefacts which have not yet been properly published may take the use of iron in Wu back some centuries further (e.g. Zou Houben 1984).

    Japan troops get Iraq go-ahead
Critics are worried the troops could be drawn into conflict. Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT Inside Iraq U.S. Reaction Global Impact CNN/Money: Rebuilding Iraq War in Iraq Special Report TOKYO, Japan (CNN) Japan's powerful lower house has given the green-light to the nation's biggest foreign military deployment since World War II, passing a law that allows soldiers to be sent to assist in the rebuilding of Iraq. Though the bill still needs to be passed by the upper house, its approval is almost certain and would permit Japanese troops to serve in a non-combat role in Iraq. The deployment could be in place as early as October and would involve about 1,000 troops. They are expected to help with water supplies, provide medical assistance and assist U.S. forces with transportation and logistics. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and his cabinet have stressed the troops will be restricted to operating only in designated non-combat zones as Japan's pacifist constitution does not allow its troops to be involved in international conflicts unless in self-defense. But critics of the bill say the zones are ill-defined given the string of attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces in recent weeks.
