Mizuho leads Japan charge to China
By Alex Frew McMillan
The Japanese banks are following overseas competitors such as HSBC and Citibank into China Story Tools
HONG KONG, China (CNN) Mizuho Holdings is leading the push as Japanese banks forge into China. Mizuho Bank and Mizuho Corporate Bank, both subsidiaries of the largest bank group in the world by assets, are preparing loan facilities of 200 billion yen ($1.67 billion) and boosting their staffs to handle business related to China, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun stated Friday. Mizuho wants to tap small- to mid-size Japanese companies looking to set up operations in China, the Nikkei said, citing unnamed company sources. Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. has already set up management specifically to run China-related business. Last year, it created a division to help Japanese companies looking to establish businesses in China and to track the Chinese economy. The rest of the Big Four, the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi and UFJ Holdings, have also linked with China's Big Four banks to allow settlement in China.

I am a Japanese living in Tokyo for more than 10 years. I like eating out here, trying new products and visiting new places in Tokyo, so I can be your help in these things. I am also very good at searching web. Japanese web sites are often very poor in their English contents, so I can check original contents for you, if you take time in reading Japanese. I had lived in UK for a year, so perhaps I can explain Japanese things comparing with western things.

I`m always willing to give help, or at least my opinions on things related to Japan. I think I`m especially strong at helping out non-native Japanese speakers with the language. Also, helping others understand the culture, such as U.S. businessmen who have to do business with Japanese. I`m not doing translations right now, unless it`s just a phrase or a word. More of a language and general Japanese culture guy than a travel/history expert.

HOSTAGE DRAMA IN IRAQ Since the Self-Defense Forces were dispatched to Iraq in January, many Japanese have worried about the associated dangers, such as the risk of a terrorist attack in Japan or of casualties among the SDF personnel on duty in Iraq. None of them could have foreseen, however, that Japanese civilians in Iraq would be taken hostage by an armed group threatening to kill them unless the SDF were withdrawn. . . . [ more

111. Saving Japan
A collection of essays by MIT economist Paul Krugman on the Japanese economy.
http://web.mit.edu/krugman/www/jpage.html
A SPECIAL PAGE ON JAPAN The state of Japan is a scandal, an outrage, a reproach. It is not, at least so far, a human disaster like Indonesia or Brazil. But Japan's economic malaise is uniquely gratuitous . Sixty years after Keynes, a great nation - a country with a stable and effective government, a massive net creditor, subject to none of the constraints that lesser economies face - is operating far below its productive capacity, simply because its consumers and investors do not spend enough. That should not happen; in allowing it to happen, and to continue year after year, Japan's economic officials have subtracted value from their nation and the world as a whole on a truly heroic scale. The fault does not, however, lie merely with those officials. Japan has also been badly served by the economics profession, both in Japan and outside. The great majority of economists - including those who specialize in issues of economic stabilization and growth - seem oddly uninterested in Japan's plight, as if the failure of conventional macroeconomic policy in the world's second largest economy were a subject of merely parochial interest, with no lessons for the rest of us. Of those who do make pronouncements on Japan, many if not most have taken the easy way out: blaming the victim, absolving themselves of responsibility for proposing solutions by asserting that Japan's problems are deep, structural, beyond the reach of technical fixes. Well, maybe; but maybe not. Sometimes big problems have small causes; sometimes a simple technical fix can work miracles.

Japan Tobacco to merge food, drink units
JT is trying to boost its business outside of cigarettes, where its total sales volume is slipping Story Tools
TOKYO, Japan Japan Tobacco Inc. will combine its frozen-food and beverage subsidiaries in April, according to a report. The merger will create a company with 400 employees and total sales of 110 billion yen ($920 million), according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The move aims to improve its distribution to supermarkets and boost its number of products in stores, the Nikkei states. The parent company realized that the two subsidiaries, though run separately, are supplying the same convenience stores and supermarkets. Japan Tobacco now plans to market its drinks and frozen foods together. Consolidating them will also cut costs by streamlining ordering and shipping systems.
Expanding away from smokes
Japan Tobacco, or JT, was a state monopoly until 1985 and is still 66.7 percent owned by the finance ministry.

Japan wants floating yuan
China keeps the yuan pegged at about 8.28 to the dollar. Story Tools TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) Japanese Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa says he agrees with U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow that the Chinese yuan should move to a floating exchange rate system. China keeps the yuan currency pegged at around 8.28 to the dollar. It has said it will move eventually to a float, but the timing of such a move could be years away. "From the international finance system standpoint, it is desirable that currency rates are determined in competitive markets," Shiokawa told a news conference on Tuesday. "But it (the yuan) is not, and we (Snow and Shiokawa) agreed that it should float." Shiokawa added, however, that Japan would not directly ask China to make such changes and that it would try to convince Beijing that doing so would be for China's own benefit. Snow, who visits Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday before travelling to Thailand for a gathering of finance ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, asserted his belief Monday in flexible exchange rates. "My long-held belief is that a well-functioning international financial system is one based on flexible exchange rates determined in competitive markets,'' Snow said.

Japan big business more optimistic
CNN's Geoff Hiscock, Asia Business Editor
Deflation remains a problem for businesses in Japan. Story Tools TANKAN SUMMARY BUSINESS CONDITIONS
March 2003 June 2003
Large manufacturers -10 -5
Non-manufacturers - 14 -13
Small manufacturers - 29 - 28
Non-manufacturers - 36 -35
Source: Bank of Japan (CNN) Big business sentiment is improving in the world's second largest economy, the latest Bank of Japan survey shows. The brighter picture in Tokyo follows figures last week showing industrial production is growing faster than expected, lifting prospects for an economy that has been stagnating for much of the past decade. The BOJ's closely watched Tankan survey of business confidence, released Tuesday morning, shows the big manufacturers' diffusion index improved from minus 10 in the March quarter to minus 5 in June. In the large non-manufacturing sector, sentiment improved slightly, up from minus 14 in March to minus 13 in June. The more optimistic outlook is better than most analysts expected. The result is starting to move the stockmarket, with the Nikkei 225 up about a third of a percent in early trade after opening almost flat.
