[edit this] [Change image] [Upload image] Traditional Japanese legend maintains that Japan was founded in 600 BC by the Emperor Jimmu a direct descendant of the sun goddess and ancestor of the present ruling imperial family. About AD 405 the Japanese court officially adopted the Chinese writing system. During the sixth century Buddhism was introduced. These two events revolutionized Japanese culture and marked the beginning of a long period of Chinese cultural influence. From the establishment of the first fixed capital at Nara in 710 until 1867 the emperors of the Yamato dynasty were the nominal rulers but actual power was usually held by powerful court nobles regents or "shoguns" (military governors). Contact With the West The first contact with the West occurred about 1542 when a Portuguese ship blown off its course to China landed in Japan. During the next century traders from Portugal the Netherlands England and Spain arrived as did Jesuit Dominican and Franciscan missionaries. During the early part of the 17th century Japan's shogunate suspected that the traders and missionaries were actually forerunners of a military conquest by European powers. This caused the shogunate to place foreigners under progressively tighter restrictions. Ultimately Japan forced all foreigners to leave and barred all relations with the outside world except for severely restricted commercial contacts with Dutch and Chinese merchants at Nagasaki. This isolation lasted for 200 years until Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. Navy forced the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854.

Timeline of Japanese History
Note: Many dates are approximate. Some developments emerged over a period of years, and precise dates for events before A.D. 600 have not been determined. Notice how long the prehistorical era was compared to other periods. JOMON (10,000 - 300 B.C.) Prehistoric period of tribal/clan organization.
Stone Age hunters and gatherers who make jomon (rope-patterned) pottery inhabit Japan. 660 B.C. Mythological Jimmu ("Divine Warrior"), descendant of sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, founds empire. YAYOI (300 B.C. - A.D. 300) Rice cultivation, metalworking, and the potter's wheel are introduced from China and Korea. Era named "Yayoi" after the place in Tokyo where wheel-turned pottery was found.

The Trail of Japanese History
We have often wanted to go to Japan ( and for young people) to experience first hand the people, their culture and customs as well as their many interesting sights. We finally got all our ducks in line in mid 1999 and took a wonderful educational trip with the Elderhostel organization. We took a lot of photos and collected many interesting publications to read, also. I had a lot of fun putting this page together and hope that others will enjoy this unusual country. Perhaps it will even stimulate some ideas for school papers. Read on! INTRODUCTION. The program started in Osaka , went on to Ise Shima Nara Kyoto and ended in Tokyo. These cities were the capitals of Japan over the years. We stayed in Tokyo a few days more after the program to explore the city more fully by subway and train. There are a lot of web sites and pages out there about Japan and here's one with piles of Japan photos if you're interested. Our impressions of Japan were very positive when we first arrived at Kansai Airport in Osaka. The airport was new and built about three miles out into Osaka Bay to avoid environmental noise problems - this must have cost a bundle! We flew back home out of the

Perez depicted intimate relationships between two people whether man and woman, two women and two men. The entire concept of a relationship and sentiments between two people is brought to light. In each painting there is an evident contrast between shade and light. The color red is central to his paintings and consistently symbolizes masculinity, passion and dominance.

The approach followed is chronological. After a brief "Basics" section, Japan's historical trajectory is divided into ten periods, ranging from several thousand years before the Common Era through the late 1990s. For now we have emhasized the earlier eras and mainly left aside Twentieth Century Japan. Some sites, however, are arranged topically and begin whenever the activity first emerged. These we have worked into the chronology where discussion of the practice, belief, or trend commences. Because of its importance, we have created a separate page for

In broad overviews of the history of Japan, scholars regularly center their attention on major turning points.
