History
Japan's earliest settlers were fishers, hunters and gatherers who slogged over the land bridges from Korea to the west and Siberia to the north. It's also thought that seafaring migrants from Polynesia were part of the ethnic blend. By AD 300, the sun-worshipping Yamato kingdom had loosely unified the nation through conquest and alliance. Buddhism was introduced from China in the mid-6th century and soon became the state religion. Rivalry between Buddhism and Shintō, the traditional religion of Japan, was diffused by presenting Shintō deities as manifestations of Buddha. With the empire more or less stable, particularly after the conquest of the indigenous Ainu in the 9th century, Japan's emperors began to devote more time to leisure and scholarly pursuits and less time to government. Important court posts were dominated by the noble but corrupt Fujiwara family. Out in the provinces, a new power was on the rise: the samurai, or warrior class, readily turned to arms to defend its autonomy, and began to muscle in on the capital, Heian (modern-day Kyoto). The Taira clan briefly eclipsed the Fujiwara, and were ousted in turn by the Minamoto family in 1185. After assuming the rank of shōgun (military leader), Minamoto Yoritomo set up his HQ in Kamakura, while the emperor remained the nominal ruler in Kyoto. This was the beginning of a long period of feudal rule by successive samurai families which lingered until imperial power was restored in 1868.

    Jomon Period
Main article: Jomon The origins of Japanese civilization are buried in legend, with the country's first written records dating from the sixth to the eighth centuries A.D., after Japan had adopted the Chinese writing system. February 11 660 BC is the traditional founding date of Japan by Emperor Jimmu Tenno . This however is a version of Japanese history, which was written down in various annals in 6th - 8th centuries AC when the emperors were struggling for power. In order to legitimate their claims to the throne, they had collections of poems set up, which made up a mythological inheritance of power from the sun-goddess Amaterasu, still the most venerable deity in the Shintoist pantheon, via her grandson Ninigi to Jimmu Tenno, who was claimed to be an ancestor of the ruling imperial family. This propaganda-myth was taken up again by 19th century historians and used as a fundamental pillar of Japan's nationalistic Kokutai ideology. More reliable are Chinese sources, which describe a country "Wa" ruled by various family-clans, adhering to their respective clan-deities. Recent anthropological studies suggest immigration from Siberia and/or Polynesia to be the ancestors of the earliest settlers in Japan. edit

    Japan History
According to tradition, the country was founded in 660 BC by Jimmu, a descendant of the sun goddess. Also by tradition, Jimmu is an ancestor of the emperor. Historians, however, place the date closer to AD 500, when Yamato priest-chiefs established control over the main island of Honshu. During the following 300 years, the country was greatly influenced by China, borrowing Chinese forms of Buddhism, government and written language, but then changing them to something uniquely Japanese. At the same time, the power of military generals, or shoguns, began to grow at the expense of the emperor, leading to a feudal system that lasted for centuries. The shoguns spent most of the 12th century fighting one another, which left the country exhausted and ripe for invasion. The Mongols under Kubla Khan tried to take advantage of this weakness, launching a naval attack that was foiled by a miraculous typhoon (the Japanese called this kamikaze or divine wind). The country was occupied by the Allies for the next five years, during which time Japan began what can only be described as an economic miracle: The country was transformed from an exhausted, occupied nation into an economic powerhouse in just a few decades. But in 1990, Japan's economy collapsed, with stock and real estate prices plunging. Throughout the '90s, the economy suffered from stagnation and unprecedented unemployment rates, leading to many bankruptcies. Recovery cintinues, but slowly.
