Japanese Geography
Many people in the world know something about Japan but they don't know where Japan is. The country is east of mainland China across the Japanese Sea. Japan is a relatively small country, approximately 1/48 the size of Russia and 1/25 the size of China in land area. Moreover, Japanese land area is smaller than the state of California in the United States! About 1.27 million Japanese people live in the country where available land is limited. High population densities cause many social problems such as rising land costs and land contamination because of a concentration of people in a small area. Japan is surrounded by the sea and is composed of 4 major islands and many small islands. The 4 major islands are Hokkaiodo, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Japan stretches from northeast to southwest, and the length is approximately 3500 km (2173.91 miles). One of major islands, Hokkaido, is at about the same longitude with Minnesota. The island of Kyushu is about the same longitude as northern Florida or the state of Georgia. According to experts, about 60% of the Japanese landscape is steep mountainous regions covered with forest. Approximately 70% of the total Japanese population is concentrated in the plains and basins, an area comprising just 24% of the habitable land. Volcanic activity in Sakura Island Japan is located in an area where 4 tectonic plates are connected to each other. The land sits on two plates, the north American plate and the Eurasian plate. The boundary between the two plates is in the middle of Honshu Island. This is one of the reasons why Japan experiences so many earthquakes. Also, there are many volcanos throughout the country. Those volcanos are still active and some of them frequently erupt .

Students will be able to:
  • compose a song using names of Japanese locations identify the impact of limited space upon the Japanese compare the price of products in New York and in Tokyo
Teacher Background:
These learning activities were designed, not as self-contained lessons, but were meant to be incorporated into classroom settings in order to serve the needs of the students and the teachers. All of our students spend a great deal of their time listening to music. Therefore, we used this interest as a motivational strategy in order to integrate geography into the social studies lesson. Although this particular musical selection uses the words and melody from the folk song

Take a look at this map of Japan and note the number of large cities in such a small area.
Where are most cities located?
Japan is a small country comprised of mountainous islands with numerous dormant and active volcanoes. The country is no wider than a few hundred miles!
Because of the mountainous terrain, most people are concentrated on the coastal areas (Tokyo, Osaka).
Imagine putting half of the U.S. population in the state of California! Then you would have the population density of Japan.
There are four main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu and numerous smaller islands to north and south, all prone to earthquakes. The highest point is Mount Fuji at 3,776 meters. There are numerous, rapidly flowing rivers which provide water for irrigation and hydroelectric-power generation.
The climate is generally rainy with high humidity.
There is a wide range of climates
  • warm summers and long cold winters in north
  • hot humid summers and short winters in center
  • and long, hot, humid summers, and mild winters in southwest.

    Anne K. Petry

July 2003 Japan in Spatial Terms Physical Systems Japan is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, and has 186 volcanoes, of which about sixty are active. Many towns are famous for hot springs, or onsen. Japan is seismically active; many of its great cities are built on fault lines. Tokyo and Yokohama were largely destroyed by fires resulting from the great Earthquake of 1923 which took 130,000 lives. The city of Kobe experienced a devastating earthquake in 1995. Since Japan is in the Northern Hemisphere, seasons are similar to North America and Europe. Winter can produce heavy snowfall on the western sides of Hokkaido and Honshu, as the Siberian winds pick up moisture from the Sea of Japan and deposit it as snow in the Japan Alps. Winter months are dry on the Eastern side of Japan.
