Economic Trends
Osa artikkeleista on englanninkielisiä.
Jokaisessa numerossa on vaihtuva, ajankohtaisia ilmiöitä tarkasteleva survey-osio sekä maakatsaus, jossa pureudutaan yksittäisen maan tai maaryhmän taloudellisen kehityksen ja liiketoimintaympäristön kuvaamiseen. Lisäksi jokainen numero sisältää tuoreita taloustilastoja OECD-maista ja Suomen lähialueilta.

New Growth Policy Committee (Industrial Structure Council) Japan's economy and society currently face enormous structural changes such as the IT revolution, inversion of the age pyramid, and economic globalization. The keys to coping with these changes and locking in self-sustained economic growth will be appropriate macroeconomic management and the construction of a robust socioeconomic system geared to structural change.
The Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau is engaged in promoting the structural reform of the Japanese economy and developing an environment conducive to the creation of new business. We are not only looking on the national level, but are also actively involved in establishing the conditions for the independent development of regional economies. To support the implementation of these measures, economic trends in areas such as production, sales and consumption are surveyed, and statistics are compiled and analyzed.
The mission of the Economic and Industrial Policy Bureau is to strategically rebuild those systems and mechanisms related to the economy and industry for the future of Japan.

Trilateral Web Site > Trilateral Statistical Report 2000
Trilateral Statistical Report 2000 PREFACE This joint annual Trilateral Statistical Report contains a compilation of statistics from the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It is also partially based on statistics from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. Besides promoting a better understanding of the importance of patent rights in the world, its purpose is to facilitate an understanding of the operations of each office and to increase general awareness about the patent grant procedures of the three offices. The report is a supplement to the separate annual reports of each of the three offices, and is one of the fruits of trilateral cooperation. To gain some insight on the patent statistics and trends contained in this report, a general overview of the world economy is presented. However, interpreting worldwide patenting activity behavior in terms of economic developments is difficult because the exact relationships with the economic factors that influence the number of patent applications are not known. Political and technological considerations should also be taken into account. Global economic output in 2000 grew by an estimated 4.8 percent as reported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The world economy was much stronger in 2000 as compared to 1999 when it grew by 3.5 percent. A large part of the growth in 2000 occurred in the early part of the year. The world economy has actually been slowing since that time and a slowdown is expected to continue into the first half of 2001. However, the outlook for 2001 remains positive, and the IMF is projecting a 3.2 percent growth rate as of May 2001.

Juichiro Koizumi
Japanese Prime Minister With the leaked report - due out on 28 August - showing that July unemployment rose to 5% from 4.9% in June, the jobless figure has now doubled in a decade. And there are predictions of worse to come, as the government introduces more austere measures aimed at shoring up the ailing economy. "We forecast that by the end of 2002, unemployment will be around 5.7%," said Morgan Stanley economist Takehiro Sato.
