Ancient Japanese History
In ancient times, Japan was a colony of Korea.
Huh? Was it? Oh, no! Never!
If you say something like that, then the story is completely opposite!
If you are a Japanese, this is probably your reaction.
The history book tells us that Emperor Tenchi sent the Japanese troops to the peninsula to fight Silla with Paekche. To tell you the truth, one of my Korean acquaintance once told me exactly the same thing. I was infuriated deep inside, though I dared not say the above insult to this Korean man. But I got the same feeling and wanted to swear at him. Even now, many Koreans believe that Yi Sun-shin made the steel boats for the first time in the world history. In his birthplace, the people built a stone monument for the prominent admiral, and consider him to be a guardian angel for the country of the Koreans. Some people even regard his birthplace as a sacred precinct. When the Korean guy told me the above line, I was much younger and somewhat hot-tempered. It has been quite a while since that day. I can now think of the whole matter rather calmly. In any case, the above a-colony-or-not-a-colony dispute has something to do with the racial matters. When you look back in history, you will know for sure that there have been a myriad of racial conflicts and problems over seemingly trifle matters, though such matters seem quite important to the parties concerned.

Prehistory
* Archaeologists long believed that Japan had no prehistoric culture; however, excavations conducted since end of WWII have unearthed Paleolithic chipped-stone tools (but no human remains).
  • People who used these tools probably moved from Asia to Japan over several land bridges that joined Japanese islands with the mainland (near Korea and SE coastline of Siberia).
  • Paleolithic Age in Japan dated from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago. Little known about the islands' inhabitants during this timeartifacts indicate they probably lived in pits or caves, used fire, and subsisted by hunting/gathering. No bone or horn tools or pottery recovered from these sites (indicates a Pre-Pottery culture).
* Paleolithic peoples followed by two Neolithic cultures: Jomon culture (c. 5000 B.C. - c. 250 B. C.): remains show characteristic Neolithic progression from chipped to polished tools and manufacture of pottery, the latter highly developed. Jomon culture spread slowly throughout all Japanese islands, with different regions manufacturing different kinds of pottery.
  • Dwellings were either shallow pits or open, stone-floored space, both covered with roofs. These structures (from 5-6 to several dozen), often grouped together in horseshoe-shaped settlements, with open, commons-space in center.

    What's in a Word
In 1997-98, I wrote a monthly column for Japan Currents magazine, with a Japanese and English-speaking readership - "What's in a Word" - with some light linguistic musings on both English and Japanese topics, many of which I've posted here. They were published with Japanese translations, which I hope to have up here soon, as well: My (Japanese-related) "What's in a Word" columns in Japan Currents Sancho Wasan " by Rennyo (1415-99), hossu (head abbot) of Honganji, Kyoto] During the years I've studied Japanese, I've compiled numerous lists about segments of the language. One of my favorites is a large collection of numerical classifiers (see below), but there are also expression lists of various types, compound verbs, etc., etc., which will appear here as time goes by. Most of them include some Japanese characters, but even without a Japanese system you can read them with the

Ancient coins alter Japan's cash history
Japan's money economy began earlier than textbooks have described, archaeologists said Tuesday in unveiling 33 bronze coins from the late seventh century recently unearthed in the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture.
According to the Nara National Research Institute of Cultural Properties, the coins, discovered last August at the Asukaike Ruins in Asuka, are older than the Wado Kaichin coins first minted in 708, thus bumping them from the archaeological record books as the nation's first circulated money.
The bronze coins, whose existence has been known for some time, are called Fuhonsen, the name of a charm believed used during the Nara Period (710-784).
The time at which Fuhonsen coins were minted falls into the Fujiwarakyo Period (694-710), which is based in modern-day Kashihara, Nara Prefecture, where three sovereigns Empress Jito Emperor Monmu and Empress Genmei once held court.
The research institute said the latest findings prove that Fujiwarakyo was aimed at creating a polity with solid political and economical structures based on the Taiho Code (Taiho Ritsuryo) of 701.
The code consisted of six volumes of penal law (ritsu) and 11 volumes of administrative law (ryo), modeled after the legal code of China's Tang Dynasty (618-907).

    HISTORY OF JAPANESE WEDDINGS
History of Japanese Marriage During the age of aristocracy, Muko-iri was the common marriage system in Japan. A bridegroom would nightly visit his bride at her home. Only after the birth of a child or the loss of his parents would be the bride be accepted as the wife in the man's home. Among common people labour power was and essential factor to maintain a family. A bridegroom would live with his bride's family to offer his labour for a certain length of time. The practice remains today in the system of adoption by which a man becomes a member of another family by marriage. W ith the rise of "Bushi" warriors, the system of women marrying into men's families called Yome-iri was gradually adopted and widely accepted in the 14th century and on. Under the feudal system marriages were often used as political and diplomatic approaches to maintaining peace and unity among feudal lords. Thus the personal will of men and women for marriage was ignored in the face of family interests and the social intercourse of unmarried persons was denied. Marriages came to be arranged by and for families and the role of "Nakodo" go-between became very important in Japan. Now this

appear in history until 57 AD when it is first mentioned in Chinese histories, where it is referred to as "Wa." The Chinese historians tell us of a land divided into a hundred or so separate tribal communities without writing or political cohesion. The Japanese do not start writing their histories until around 600 AD; this historical writing culminates in 700 AD in the massive chronicles, The Record of Ancient Matters and the Chronicles of Japan. These chronicles tell a much different and much more legendary history of Japan, deriving the people of Japan from the gods themselves.
