It was Bob Marley who made reggae into an international phenomenon. In the wake of his success in the 1970s came a host of other names, and it wasn't long before reggae became an established genre of music. But reggae was simply the growth, the development, of what had been happening in Jamaican music.Beginning with ska, and then rock steady, the loudest island in the world had declared its real musical independence, and had already made an imprint on the world, albeit a small one. If you want to take it back to the beginning, you have to blame it on jazz. One of America's great contributions to musical culture, it swept around the world. Through radio broadcasts and records, Jamaica, then still and British colony, got the fever in the 1940s. Bands sprang up to entertain tourists, like Eric Dean's Orchestra and future giants like trombonist Don Drummond and sax man Tommy McCook learned the licks and honed their chops on the music. With the advent of the 1950s, American popular music began to fragment. In jazz, be-bop became the new movement. Rhythm and blues, the black style formerly called race music, started coming on strong. The era of the jazz orchestra was slowly fading as music grew harder, stronger, more youthful. That spread to Jamaica, just as it did to other parts of the globe.

Susan Candiotti: Jamaica violence so intense nurses fainted
Susan Candiotti CNN Correspondent Susan Candiotti is reporting from Kingston, Jamaica, where soldiers in tanks, in armored cars and on foot patrolled the capital on orders from the prime minister to restore calm after days of violence. CANDIOTTI: West Kingston is a ghost town. The streets were deserted for a third straight day after violence erupted Saturday. Businesses, including banks, electronic stores, and restaurants in West Kingston, remained shuttered. Open air markets were virtually deserted Tuesday. A bus driver said she had few passengers on her route. "The situation is tense, very tense," said Janice Kerr, the bus driver. Tuesday night is a very critical night to see whether calm indeed has been restored. The minister of national security reportedly says the situation is back to normal. However, since night has fallen, everyone is waiting and seeing whether rival gangs will clash in the streets. Police said gunfire was sporadic throughout the day Tuesday, in stark contrast from this weekend, when bullets killed at least 22 people.

UK warns of Jamaica drug smugglers
Up to 30 kilos could be arriving on each flight, Sinkinson says LONDON, England More than one in 10 passengers arriving at British airports from Jamaica could be smuggling in cocaine, according to a senior UK diplomat. As much as 30 kilograms of the drug could be hidden inside couriers on each flight from the island, Deputy High Commissioner Phil Sinkinson said. Sinkinson said many Jamaicans especially single mothers were tempted by payments of up to £3,300 ($5,000) for carrying drugs into Britain. He said the one-in-10 figure was "probably an estimate on the low side." "There's certainly a fair number and each one can be carrying half a kilo. If you had 60 people on board the flight there would be 30 kilos of cocaine going through," he told the BBC. Lord Harris, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said police in Britain and Jamaica were co-operating to stop the flow of drugs.

Iris reaches hurricane strength, threatens Jamaica
Satellite image of Hurricane Iris taken at 7:07 p.m. EDT on Saturday MIAMI, Florida (CNN) With maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour, Iris has become a hurricane as it moves along the southern coast of Haiti, heading for Jamaica, the National Weather Service said Saturday. Hurricane Iris is located about 225 miles east-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, moving west at about 17 mph (28 km/h). It is expected to pass over Jamaica early Sunday. The storm's forward movement is expected to decrease gradually over the next few days. As of 5 p.m. EDT Saturday, a hurricane warning remained in effect along the southern coast of the Dominican Republic from Barahona to Cabo Beata, and along Haiti's southern coast, the National Weather Service said. A hurricane warning also was in effect for Jamaica and the Cuban provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo. A hurricane watch was still in effect for the provinces of Las Tunas and Camaguey in eastern Cuba as well as the Cayman Islands.

Recommend This Group to a Friend Jamaican Butterflies In October 2001, my family and I moved to Tower Isle on the North Coast of Jamaica from the UK. Since we've been here I've been fascinated by the wealth of butterflies in the area. My ambition is to photograph and identify as many species as possible during our stay here. After 2 years my total is nearing 50 species photographed - although I have seen several species that I have so far been unable to photograph. I hope to reach that magic total before we return to the UK in July. I took all but 2 or 3 of the photos within 5 miles of Tower Isle (most within 1 mile!) on a Casio Qv 3000ex digital camera and edited them with Micrografx Picture Publisher 8. (Editing is largely limited to 'cropping' and in many cases the photographs are 'full frame') I have identified many of the butterflies using Brown and Heineman's "Jamaica and its Butterflies" 1972. I have also received a lot of help with identification, for which I am eternally grateful, from Dionne and Liz at the Institute of Jamaica, but I can always use more help!
