Home Jamaica's history is told by the food Jamaican's eat. Rich and spicy as the pepperpot soup that originated with the Taino Indians, Jamaican cooking is a culinary melting pot that combines a hint of Spanish, a dash of English and a heaping teaspoon of Indian and Chinese with a cup or two of African ingredients to serve up the Caribbean's most creative cuisine.
Jamaica's history is told by the food Jamaicans eat. The cassava the Arawaks grew is used today as "bammie," a toasted flat cake eaten with fried fish. The Maroons, always on the run, devised a way of spicing and slow cooking pork that they called "jerking", today's visitor tastes jerk chicken and fish as well. To feed the slaves cheaply and well, the ackee fruit was brought from Africa, as were breadfruit and a variety of yams and root vegetables.
The Africans carried their own culinary secrets with them, including duckunoo, a steamed pudding made of green bananas and coconut. Breadfruit arrived on the island courtesy of Captain William Bligh, of Bounty fame. And the ubiquitous meat patties sold by roadside vendors are a direct, but much spicier, descendent of English meat pasties.
Curried goat, a popular island dish often served with rice and peas, dates to 1845 when following the abolition of slavery plantation owners began importing indentured laborers from India and later China; the new arrivals quickly added their own contributions, including curry and other spices, to the island's expanding palette of exotic flavors.

The Game is played by two players. In the last twenty years the game of squash has enjoyed a great increase in popularity throughout the world to become one of the most successful "one-on-one" sports amongst amateur participants. Where once squash courts were the reserve of country clubs and public schools, they now feature in most community sports centres and spawn well organised and supported leagues for players of all standards At most championship matches, there are two officials, the 'marker' and the referee. The marker call the sscore, makes all the initial decisions about whether the services and the various shots in the rally are good and in general is 'the voice' that keeps the game flowing. The referee is in averall charge, and all the marker's calls can be appealed against. The referee decides all appeals and is there to ensure that the match reaches it fair conclusion, which can only be achieved if each rally is fairly decided.

J amaica Kincaid's life reads like an American Cinderella story: born and raised in poverty on the island of Antigua, West Indies; unloved by an unresponsive and often abusive mother who shipped her off to the United States at 17 to be an au pair (Kincaid insists on the word "servant" to describe her employment status); "discovered" on the streets of Manhattan by New Yorker columnist George Trow, who brought her into the fold of the magazine by printing one of her articles in the "Talk of the Town" section; became a celebrated fiction writer ( Annie John, Lucy, The Autobiography of My Mother

Reseber¤ttelse i ord och bild av Fredrik Eriksson.
    http://www.rootvalta.com/jamaica/jamintro.html

    Jamaica, a brief overview.
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean.
It is about 90 miles south of Cuba and about 600 miles south of Florida.
The island is approximately 146 miles long with widths varying from 22 and 51 miles.
Jamaica is a very mountainous island with the highest point being the Blue Mountain Peak standing at 7402 feet.
The climate is tropical, with average temperatures between 80°F - 90°F, at
higher altitudes the temperature may be lower.
The first known inhabitants of Jamaica were the Arawak Indians who came from South America.
The Arawaks called the island Xaymaca, which translates to "The land of wood
and water". Christopher Columbus "Discovered" Jamaica on May 5th 1494. The Spanish enslaved the Arawaks, who were eventually wiped out, through slavery, ill treatment, common european ailments and diseases.
Slaves from Africa were imported by the Spanish in 1517. In 1655 the English

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CNN) Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide is to travel to Jamaica early next week, Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson has said. Aristide is currently in the Central African Republic, where he fled after resigning and leaving his turbulent country February 29 in the face of an advancing rebel insurgency. Aristide has said he was abducted by the United States and forced to leave, a charge Washington has vehemently denied. Patterson said Aristide will come to Jamaica to see his children. "Mr. Aristide has expressed a wish to return temporarily to the Caribbean with his wife and to be reunited with their two young children who are currently in the United States," said a statement on Patterson's Web site.
