Arawaks lived peacefully for over 2,000 years until Christopher Columbus arrived in 1494. The Spanish were attacked by the British on May 10, 1655 and fled to Cuba. Slaves freed by the British conquerors became known as the Maroons, and they waged several battles against the British - in 1739 and 1740 . In the treaty of 1740, the Maroons were given land and rights as free men. After a failed attempt at a West Indies Federation in 1958, on August 6, 1962, Jamaica was granted its independence from England.

BUSINESS and INVESTMENT GUIDE, JAMAICA
Jamaica's unique position as a major commercial and cultural centre of the Caribbean makes it a prime investment location.
E CONOMY
Primary earners are tourism, bauxite mining , agricultural exports. Main crops are sugarcane, bananas, coffee, citrus, pimento(allspice) , coconuts and horticultural products. Pimento and pineapple are indigenous to the island. Jamaica is one of the major exporters of bauxite and alumina and the premier world source of allspice. Over one million tourists visit the island annually.
B USINESS OPPORTUNITIES
The island offers tax incentives, government-supported programs, and low establishment, production and operational costs, together with high levels of productivity and preferential access to world markets. Opportunities exists in agriculture, tourism, industrial manufacturing, the arts and other areas, and these become all the more attractive with the prospect of becoming involved with the dynamic people of the country. In addition to a favourable position on world markets facilitated through the Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) , which permits duty-free treatment of Jamaican goods in the U.S., and similar treatment under the European Economic Community's LOME IV convention, Jamaica offers an aggressively investor-friendly program of incentives. These include a range of income tax exemptions on duties, and export tax rebates which vary according to area of industry and other factors. Free Zone operating costs are currently among the lowest in the world, and the island's proximity to North America means that transportation costs are competitive with any other manufacturing venue.

Government and Politics of Jamaica
Excerpted from the book, Tour Jamaica , by Margaret Morris
Jamaica is an independent state, a parliamentary democracy and member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. At present, The Queen of England is also the Queen of Jamaica and represented by a Governor General whose duties like those of the British sovereign are largely ceremonial. Political power lies with parliament which consists of a House of elected members representing 60 constituencies and a Senate of 21 members, fourteen of them nominated by the Prime Minister and 8 by the Leader of the Opposition.
The British divided the island into parishes for administrative purposes and the system has endured. There are 13 parishes, each with an elected Parish Council. Originally these were composed of prominent local citizens but nowadays Parish Council elections are fought on political party lines. Tradition-ally, Parish Councils were responsible for the administration of local government services: roads and works, health and sanitation, fire brigade, water supply, etc., but had little autonomy. Over the years, central government has usurped most of these responsibilities (like water supply), and others (such as garbage collection), have been divested to private enterprise. The incumbent government's expressed intention to strengthen local government has not materialized as yet.
