A Place To Live Programme Outline
Kingston is the capital of Jamaica, the home of Reggae music, and where shantytowns on ‘captured’ (not owned) land are common. The forested Blue Mountains, formed originally by volcanic action, are famous as a coffee growing region. On the North Coast are sandy beaches and coral reefs. Children from the local schools introduce us to their school, their country, their way of life and the links that exist between the UK and Jamaica.

GEOGRAPHY

Jamaica is located in the middle off the Caribbean Sea and belongs to the Antilles together with more than 1000 other islands. It lies some 150 km south of Cuba and 160 km west of Haiti. The island measures 200 km from E to W and 65 km from N to S. The total surface is 7058 square km which is about one third of the surface of Belgium. Jamaica is crossed by a range of mountains reaching 2256 m at the Blue Mountain Peak in the E and descending towards the W, with a series of spurs and forested gullies running N and S. There are approximately 2,500,000 Jamaicans. 90 per cent of the islanders are from African origin but there are also Chinese, East Indians, Arabs and European minorities. They speak English and Jamaican Creole or Patwa. The climate is hot and sunny all year and is called a tropical marine climate. The average temperature is 26°C (Belgium 10 °C). The moist trade winds blow all the year from the east or north-east and brings rains to the island (average rainfall on the island is 190 - 380 cm/year, here in Belgium only 76 - 127 cm/year, still we are always complaining...). Due to the mountainous relief the NE will be wetter than the rest of the island. The wettest place on the island are the John Crow Mountains. These limestone mountains reaching nearly 1200 m get an annual average rainfall of an unbelievable 635 cm/year.

Digital Topographic Analysis of Cockpit Karst:

• Tropical Karst Geomorphology;

• Remote Sensing
My research dissertation examines the cockpit karst geomorphology of The Cockpit Country in Jamaica, as well as the landforms found immediately outside its boundaries. Indeed, the Cockpit Country is the type area for the cockpit variety of tropical karst. The late Dr. Marjorie Sweeting and one of her graduate students, Mick Day, both from Oxford, carried out pioneering research in the area decades ago. I now seek to employ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other high-tech tools to re-examine the terrain in the hope of figuring out what exactly is 'cockpit karst'. Publications:

Jamaica
The reefs of Jamaica are in poor shape due to over-fishing, fishing with explosives, coral harvesting, development, untreated sewage, and other human-caused problems. It is believed that the deterioration of the reefs is causing Jamaica's beaches, a precious tourism resource, to erode. Montego Bay Marine Park is considered severely threatened due to lack of management. Oil and other pollutants from the airport add to the damage caused by fish traps, spearfishing and collection of coral by tourists. The park is badly in need of management to save the remaining reef in this area.

    H ISTORY
Jamaica was founded around 1000 AD by Arawak Indians
They named it ' Xaymaca ' and left other legacies like Bammy (cassava bread), 'barbecue' meats, words such as hurricane, hammock, tobacco, canoe. Arawak Museum, St. Catherine
Columbus landed 4 May 1494. Founded Sevilla Nueva, St. Ann in 1509.
Capital city, Santiago de la Vega ( Spanish Town ) founded in 1538. The Spanish were the first to import African slaves to work on tobacco and, later, sugar plantations (within four decades of Spanish rule the Arawaks were eradicated).
British forces captured the island in 1655.
Sugarcane dominated the economy. Buccaneers reigned in Port Royal , the commercial centre, until the devastating 1692 earthquake when most of the city sank and a new capital, Kingston , was founded. More Africans, mainly Fante, Ashanti, Coromantee, Ibo and Yoruba people were imported. Escaped slaves, the Maroons , constantly fought the British until peace treaties gave the Maroons self-goverment and the rights to the land they inhabited. Their descendants maintain the lands but share all other responsibilities as Jamaicans.
    Slavery ended in 1834.

The geography of Jamaica is as varied as its people and its rich historical and cultural background. In Jamaica, you will learn about the original Carib and Arawak Indian peoples, Spanish and British colonialism, the plantation period and economy, the achievement of independence in 1962, and Jamaica's efforts toward development in the contemporary world as the leader of the Caribbean community. Jamaica is connected by culture to Africa, by geography to the Americas, and by history to the British Commonwealth. From its British heritage, the national language is English (with a melodious lilt), but you will equally hear and learn the "second language," patois. You will enjoy reggae music and learn of Bob Marley's leadership in bringing peace between rival political parties and points of view. Through service-learning and your homestay, you will learn that this island nation is more than beaches and reggae (although both of these will certainly be part of your experience). You will directly encounter the social, cultural, economic, and political issues and concerns facing Jamaica and the Caribbean, and learn what it means for Jamaicans to live in the shadow of its giant neighbor to the north.

Jamaica's popular tourism image is of vast sandy beaches and all-inclusive hotels. But the island's small villages represent a more realistic view of Jamaican culture and community life. These are economically poor, isolated communities where people struggle to survive. As English-speaking descendants of slaves, the Jamaicans are resilient, proud, and resourceful. While their lives are difficult, the people are hard-working, spiritually enriched and hopeful for their future. Global Volunteers started its ground-breaking work in the Blue Mountain communities, and we continue this 20-year relationship today. Since 1984, we have been privileged to work with and learn from the generous people in this region. "We invite you to share this formidable relationship with us! In all of the areas we serve, you will be helping to ensure a better future for the children and their families of these quiet villages."

Main article: History of Jamaica The name of the country derives from the name Xamayca, meaning land of wood and water, given to it by the original Arawak people from South America, who first settled there around 1,000AD. Jamaica was first claimed for Spain after Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1494. Columbus used it as his family's private estate until in 1670 the British seized of the island.
