REGGAE UPDATES FROM JAMAICA: Two Culture Clash compilation set for August release
by Kevin Jackson / eurfeedback@eurweb.com

(May. 6, 2004) Gee Jam studio's head honcho, Jon Baker, has revived his Gee Street Records imprint with the release of Two Culture Clash, a compilation album featuring dancehall and Reggae acts riding electronic beats. The compilation is the label's first major project in a while and it features the works of several European-based electronic music producers. The project was launched a week ago in London at the offices of the Jamaican High Commission, and according to Gee Jam's publicist, Jade Lee of Jade Promotions, "it's a meshing of electronic music and dancehall/Reggae". "It's an amazing album and we just launched it last week in London. We are very excited about it as it crosses all barriers, age and colour. It's very diversified," Lee said. Electronic music has been making a major impact in Europe and North America for years, thanks to acts including Moby, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx and Tricky. The Two Culture Clash compilation is a joint venture between the UK-based Wall of Sound label and Gee-Street Records. The compilation is due for release internationally on August 2. Among the acts featured are Barrington Levy, Innocent Kru, Tanya Stephens, Bling Dawg, Big Youth, Ward 21, Spragga Benz, Nadine Sutherland, Ce'Cile, General Degree, Danny English and Ernest Ranglin.

Jamacian History. The settlement of the first people The first peopleto come to jamaica were people from Venezuela, known as the Arawaks.

Jamacian History
The settlement of the first people
The first people to come to Jamaica were people from Venezuela, known as the Arawaks. They are thought to have come to Jamaica in two major waves, the first in 650 AD, and the second in 900 AD. They were then joined by the Caribs, who came from Guiana. While the Arawaks were a peaceful people, the Caribs were cannibalistic and fierce fighters. Much fighting arose between these two groups. Invasion by Columbus and Conquistadors
Columbus came to Jamaica in 1494. With him, he brought fear, disease and terror to the Jamaicans. He named the island Jamaica because he heard tthe natives call it Xaymaca. He brought smallpox and other horrible dieases, to which islanders had no antibodies. Most of them died out soon after Columbus arrived, and those that didn't were tortured and terrorized by Columbus and his sailors. He then left and returned several years later on his last voyage to the new world. During this voyage, he spent a year stranded on Jamaica trying to rebuild his boats. The First European Settlers
Soon after Columbus, in about 1510, there was an influx of Spanish Europeans. The Spanish, under the rule of Jaun de Esquivel, treated the Jamaicans no better than Columbus had and even more of the aboriginal Jamaicans died. At first they settled a beautiful area near St. Ann's Bay, and made a exquiotselty beautiful town named New Seville (sfter the governor) but then had to move due to the area's climate and swampy conditions. They then settled in present day Spanish Town. They built a beautiful city, with 500 houses and several churches. Unfortunately, none of this city remains, have rotted away after years of neglect and disuse.

NEW YORK,(JIS):

SEND TO A FRIEND The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission of New Jersey has begun a study of Jamaican culture.
In an interview with JIS News, Eva Walters, Folklore Coordinator of the Middlesex Cultural and Heritage Commission, spoke of the importance of such a study. "Throughout the years, Jamaican immigrants have made such valuable cultural contributions to the state of New Jersey and so we thought that it was important to record their impact as best we could," Ms. Walters stated. Jamaican-born Councilwoman of the city of Highland Park, the Hon. Elsie Foster-Dublin, lauded the Commission for the undertaking. "This project has been long overdue; I am overjoyed that our cultural history will be documented and become a part of the state's archives," the Councilwoman said.

http://www.emory.edu/ENGLISH/Bahri/Kincaid.html
Jamaica Kincaid Biography Major Themes "I was always being told I should be something, and then my whole upbringing was something I was not: it was English." (Cudjoe 219) "Antigua is a small place, a small island...It was settled by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Not too long after, it was settled by human rubbish from Europe, who used enslaved by noble and exalted human beings from Africa...to satisfy their desire for wealth and power, to feel better about their own miserable existence, so that they could be less lonely and empty- a European disease" (80-81). Antigua became self-governing in 1967, but did not achieve the status of an independent nation within the Commonwealth until 1981. Within the structure of the British educational system imposed upon Antiguans, Kincaid grew to "detest everything about England, except the literature" (Vorda 79). She felt first-hand the negative effects of British colonialism as the colonists attempted to turn Antigua "into England" and the natives "into English" without regard for the native culture or homeland (Kincaid 24). The effects of colonialism serve as the major theme for A Small Place in which Kincaid expresses her anger both at the colonists and at the Antiguans for failing to fully achieve their independence. She feels that Antiguans failed to adopt the positive aspects of colonialism, for instance a good educational system which might help the population to better their lives. This inability to promote the importance of education and hope for the future is symbolized in the failure to rebuild Antigua's only library, St. John's, which was "damaged in the earthquake of 1974" and years later, still carries the sign "REPAIRS ARE PENDING" (Kincaid 9).

T he first selection represents side one of a tape I was given in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, during the summer of 1995. I t was part of a music sharing experience with some locals living on the mountainside. T he shell of this first cassette has written on it Touch of Class Musik and Shanka Live in Limelight and is also marked Oldies T he man who gave me the tape guessed that it had been made sometime in 1993, directly from the DJ console at a Montego Bay area nightclub. T he music itself is strictly oldies stuff, many of them actual remakes of U.S. A s near as I can tell, the recordings seem pretty old too.

Dedicated to promoting Reggae music, Jamaican culture and values, IRIE FM has developeda reputation for being a Grass Roots station. That we are and more .
http://www.iriefm.net/text/profile.php
IRIE FM began test transmissions in July 1990 with a heavy bass line and rocking Reggae rhythms that got Jamaica jumping.
Reggae in the morning, Reggae in the evening, Reggae in the night was our cry. Critics said it was impossible to sustain a 24-hour Reggae music station. But they did not count on nearly forty (40) years worth of rich, pulsating music which is in the heart and soul of all of us. Dedicated to promoting Reggae music, Jamaican culture and values, IRIE FM has developed a reputation for being a "Grass Roots" station. That we are and more . . . just check any tourist or "toponaris". Great sports, news, commentary, features and entertainment that appeal to everyone. And so, the greatest love story in Jamaican radio began and has become a growing force. In no time, IRIE FM carved a special niche and endeared a large, loyal audience, becoming the people's number one radio station. IRIE FM has arguably more fun, topical, current, controversial and relevant issues than anyone else in the industry. IRIE FM is more than just the Mecca of Reggae music and Jamaican culture. It is the home of the hottest group of announcers and selectors assembled in Jamaica. There is Bob Clarke, G.T. Taylor, Deon Mattis, Evon Hewitt, Gary "G", Elise Kelly, Mighty Mike, Big "A", Mutabaruka, Andrea Williams, Ron Muschette, DJ Wayne, DJ Sunshine, DJ Face and Chris Supreme. IRIE FM is to Reggae music and Jamaican culture what MTV is to America and rock/pop music.

STEFAN SPATH
Born in Germany and previously living throughout Europe, Africa and Australasia, Stefan has resided in Jamaica for over 5 years. It is perhaps from these experiences that Stefan has come to fully embrace the Jamaican culture. This is clearly demonstrated in his artwork which passionately reflects the vibrancy of the colors of the Caribbean. Stefan’s love of painting is inspired with flair and design from his career in the culinary field. His original entry into the art world has resulted in commissioned pieces existing within private collections around the world.

is BellaOnline's Caribbean Culture Host Jimmy Cliff - Jamaican Artist Jimmy Cliff is a well known Jamaican artist who influenced the reggae scene for decades. Born James Chambers in Jamaica in 1948, he blasted into the public eye in 1964 when he went on a tour of the US, playing his island music.
His first true hit came in 1968 with the song "Wonderful World, Beautiful People". A few years later he turned to pop music and lost some of his following, but he remained a cult hero for many. His reggae music influenced both Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, who wrote "Mother and Child Reunion" after hearing some Jimmy Cliff music.
Jimmy Cliff continues to perform and put out music, to the delight of his fans.
