Dating back to Vedic times, Jainism is an ancient, Indian-born philosophy. Jainism is a Nastik (Atheist) philosophy and does not accept the Vedas to be revelations from God. Twenty-four preachers, known as `Jinas' (conquerors) or `Tirthankaras' (fordmakers), propounded it across the river of life. `Tirthankara', its first founder, was one Rishabhadeva mentioned in the Yajur Veda. The 24th and last Tirthankara was Mahavira . Jainism though does not believe in God, however, believes in the concept of re-birth. The ethical doctrines of Jainism are based on the path of liberation, comprising right belief, right knowledge and right conduct. The prescriptions of Jainism are about the way to achieve this liberation. They apply to ascetics and householders. The householders have 12 Vratas or codes of conduct, five Anuvratas (small vows) and seven Shilavratas (supplementary vows). If the Anuvaratas are strictly performed, they become Mahavratas (Great vows).
The Jains are divided into two major sects, Digambara (Sky-clad or naked) and Shvetambara (White-clad). Digambara Jains are more austere and go about nude or free from all material trappings and social inhibitions. To attain Kavalajnana or final liberation, they prefer voluntary death. In Shvetambara, which is less austere, people can use a simple white cloth. The difference in the two sects is more in rituals than in doctrines.

Jainism can be described as world denying but life affirming. The world it denies is material but life is spirit. Contemporary Jainism can trace its roots back to India over 2500 years ago but claims a much older heritage going back countless thousands of years into Indian pre-history. There are only about 2-3 million Jains in the world today, mostly in pockets in north and south India. There are about 6000 Jain families in the USA and 250 Jains in the Washington DC area. return to top Created by Laura Ellen Shulman home Last updated: April 05, 2004

Overview of Jainism
Beginning as a Hindu reform movement , Jainism became as an independent religion by the 6th century BC . The primary historical figures of Jainism are the Tirthankaras . Jainism has three main variants: Digambara Shvetambara , and Sthanakavasis . Jains believe in ahimsa asceticism karma samsara , and the jiva ; their primary scripture is the Siddhanta At 6 million adherents, Jainism is the smallest of the 10 major world religions . There are 6000 Jain nuns, and 2500 Jain monks most of the nuns are members of the Shvetambara. ( Fisher ) In India , Jains are over-represented in positions of economic and political power; the global diamond market is dominated by Jain-owned corporations . Jains have been a significant force in Indian culture , contributing to Indian philosophy, art, architecture, sciences and last but not least the politics of Mohandas Gandhi which led to Indian independence Jainism shares concepts with Hinduism and Buddhism , but is a separate religious path. As part of its stance on non-violence, Jainism goes beyond

Jainism [j I u m] Pronunciation Key Jainism [i.e., the religion of Jina], religious system of India practiced by about 5,000,000 persons. Jainism, Ajivika , and Buddhism arose in the 6th cent. B.C. as protests against the overdeveloped ritualism of Hinduism , particularly its sacrificial cults, and the authority of the Veda. Jaina tradition teaches that a succession of 24 tirthankaras (saints) originated the religion. The last, Vardhamana, called Mahavira [the great hero] and Jina [the victor], seems to be historical. He preached a rigid asceticism and solicitude for all life as a means of escaping the cycle of rebirth, or the transmigration of souls . Thus released from the rule of karma , the total consequences of past acts, the soul attains nirvana , and hence salvation. Mahavira organized a brotherhood of monks, who took vows of celibacy, nudity, self-mortification, and fasting. Since the 1st cent. A.D. , when a schism developed over the issue of nudity, there have been two great divisions of Jains, the Digambaras [space-clothed, i.e., naked] and the Svetambaras [white-clothed]. Jainists, then as now, accumulate merit through charity, through good works, and in occasional monastic retreat. Early Jainism, arising in NE India, quickly spread west, and according to tradition Chandragupta , the founder of the Maurya empire, was converted to the sect, as were several kings of Gujarat. The Jaina canon, however, is preserved in an ancient dialect of NE India (see

The Temples of Orissa Religious Background Jainism Jainism is the name given to the religious movement of the Jains, whose community follows the religious path established by Vardhaman Mahavira, a prophet also known as the Jina or Victor. Born in Northern Bihar, Mahavira is alleged to have preached in the 6th century BC. The 6th century BC constitutes a very remarkable chapter in the Cultural history of India by reason of the fact that there was a great religious upheaval and intellectual uprising in the country. It witnessed the emergence of two international religions of capital importance - Jainism and Budhism propounded by Mahavira and Buddha respectively. These two highly developed forms of religions excercised a profound Cultural influence not only in the different parts of India but also in her neighbouring regions to the east and west. This is in fact the most significant contribution of India to the world civilisation. Jainism in Orissa started in 6th century BC, during this period Jainism was the state religion of Kalinga. This is evidenced by a number of literary sources. Besides, this is also corroborated by the unchallengable testimony of the Hathigumpha inscriptionof Kharavella. The 23rd Tirthankara Parsvanath is said to have visited Orissa and sermoned in his doctorine in some places of this land. It can be said undoubtedly that parsvanath was the first to preach Jainism in Kalinga. There is an intimate relationship between the name of Parsvanath and the ancient culture of Kalinga.

JAINISM The Jains "deny god, worship men, and nourish vermin." Washburn Hopkins. Comments on Michael Tobias' video "Ahimsa: Non-Violence" Jain doctor's position on abortion. Isn't it inconsistent with the doctrine of ahimsa? Are such exceptions taken with regard to animal life? Isn't the doctrine of reincarnation the strongest argument for the anti-abortion position? In the West we can say that the fetus is not a person until late in pregnancy, but in India our personal identities (located in Jain jiva or Hindu atman ) are uncreated and eternal. Caste system did creep back into Jainism. The Karnataka (southwestern state) Jains did not allow untouchables into their spiritual community. Hierarchy even exists among the gods: some are servants who do work for the higher gods. "Altogether there are in heaven and hell ninety-nine kinds of gods who are regarded as menial because they serve" (Stevenson, The Heart of Jainism , p. 270). No biography of Alexander the Great that I have read mentions the story about him and the Jain monk, at least taken as history. Alexander turned back because his Macedonian troops refused to continue the Indian campaign. In his book Life Force: The World of Jainism Tobias does admit that the story may not be true (p. 62).

Hinduism is based on the diverse Vedic texts, which repeatedly advocate nonviolence towards humans and animals. Consequently, pacifism and vegetarianism have been encouraged by Hindus for thousands of years. Hindus recognize that animals have feelings and believe that animals have souls that are reincarnated into different life forms over time. Ahimsa : The Hindu Ethic of Non-Violence
The Hindu Diet
Jain traditions respect ahimsa (nonviolence), aparigraha (non-acquisition), asteya (respect for others' rights) and satya (truth). While Jains comprise less than 1% of India's population, they contribute more than half of all social welfare. All of India's 7 million Jains are vegetarians, reflecting Jainism's central tenet that it is wrong to kill or harm any living being.

The Metaphysics of Space and Motion and the Wave Structure of Matter (WSM) explains Jainism Philosophy
All is One and Dynamic
Explanation of Quotes - Quotations on Jainism
Jainism - Jain Philosophy is founded on a Dynamic Infinite and Eternal Universe (no creator) and the existence of six universal entities, substances or dravyas . All of the six substances ( soul (Jiva), matter (Pudgal), space (Akas), medium of motion (Dharmastikay), medium of rest (Adharmastikay), time (Kaal or Samay) are indestructible, imperishable, immortal, eternal and perpetually changing. The Metaphysics of Space and Motion and the Wave Structure of Matter unites Jainism's six universal entities. Space is the One Substance (Infinite, Eternal) which Exists with the properties of a wave-medium. Matter, as the Spherical Wave Motion of Space, determines the Size of our Finite Spherical Universe within an Infinite Space. Thus Matter and the Universe are One.
The impermanence / flux of matter is caused by the continual wave Motion of Space (which causes both Matter and Time), and the Interconnection of all things is due to the Spherical In and Out Waves which interact with all other matter in the universe. Below is a short introduction to the

http://www.bodhicitta.net/Jain Compassion.htm
Home Bodhicitta Teachings Buddhist Teachings Meditation ... About this site Jain Compassion The values of Jain religion are based on five vows viz.- non-violence, devotion to truth, non-stealing, celibacy and non-possession. The entire life style of the Jain Shravak and the Jain Sadhu emanates from these vows and the foremost is non-violence. Ahimsa, non-violence, has been the sheet-anchor of Jainism. Ahimsa is one of the basic virtues. No where else in the other religious traditions has this basic virtue been so scientifically, scrupulously and thoroughly integrated with the main doctrine. Jainism is the only tradition which has consistently allowed this tenet soak into the very essentials of its teachings and practices. This singular uncompromising emphasis on Ahimsa is the special and exclusive feature of Jainism. In Jainism, Ahimsa is not mere human sympathy; it is empathy, the urge to identify oneself completely with other persons, other living beings, with the whole universe. Bhagwan Mahavir said

Families of Religions Jainism No deity Vardhamana Mahavira, born in India around 540 BCE, took up a wandering ascetic life. Having achieved omniscience after years of suffering, he began to teach others and organized followers into groups of monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen. There is an eternal pattern of rise and fall in the universe and each age has twenty four teachers who help people escape the cycle of reincarnation. Jain temples have a seated image of a particular teacher. Worship of the image is to happen every day, usually in the morning. The five basic principles are: avoid doing harm, truthfulness, no stealing, chastity, and detachment from material things. Links: Jain World Jain information and links.
