Overview of Jainism
The primary historical figures of Jainism are the Tirthankaras . Jainism has three main variants: Digambara Shvetambara , and Sthanakavasis . Jains believe in ahimsa asceticism karma samsara , and the jiva ; their primary scripture is the Siddhanta At six million adherents, Jainism is among the smallest of the major world religions . There are 6000 Jain nuns, and 2500 Jain monks most of the nuns are members of the Shvetambara. ( Fisher ) In India , Jains are over-represented in positions of economic and political power; the global diamond market is dominated by Jain-owned corporations. Jains have been a significant force in Indian culture , contributing to Indian philosophy, art, architecture, sciences and last but not least the politics of Mohandas Gandhi which led to Indian independence Jainism shares concepts with Hinduism and Buddhism , but is a separate religious path. As part of its stance on non-violence, Jainism goes beyond

A unique series about the seven centers of energy of chakras which opens to enlighten is being taught by Jain Master Chitrabhanu. Based on the teachings of Mahavira, the 24th and last prophet of Jains, born in 598 B.C. According to this teaching, there are seven centers within the body, corresponding to seven levels of awareness. This is a rare opportunity to instruct students in a technique for unfolding and experience their inner levels of consciousness developed by the ancient meditative traditions in India. Read the background about this gifted teacher by clicking on the left. The third chakra will be given on June 9. UNFOLDING SENSE OF SECURITY WITH CHAKRAS: (MAY 19, 2004). The FIRST chakra gave insights about the human capacity to feel secure in ANY situation. The SECOND chakra, COURAGEOUS CONSCIOUSNESS OF CREATIVITY (May 26 at 7:30 P.M.) deals with the power of creativity when you become proactive in life, business dealings, relationships etc. Can we discard the idea of sin and guilt? Then a spiritual awareness is limited by this. We approach this second chakra as the center of our origin, the place of our creation and in meditation we plan our life instead of failure to plan. A brief introduction to Jainism
Jainism is an ascetic religion of India, founded in the sixth century B.C., that teaches transmigration of the soul and denies the existence of a perfect or supreme being. While most religions have split into more than one camp over doctrine, the only doctrinal split in Jainism is over the issue of whether or not the ascetics should wear clothes or not.

III. JAINISM Jainism is an ancient faith rooted in the pre-Aryan Indus Civilization, concerned primarily with teaching ways and means of escaping the entanglements of the world. Jainism is a life-negating, somber, pessimistic faith. Scriptures: Agamas (precepts) or Siddhantas (treatises). Gods: Jainism denies a creator-god. However, human teachers, Tirthamkaras (ford-makers), are worshipped once they have reached liberation. They consider Mahavira the last of twenty-four Tirthamkaras, the first being Rishabha. Terms and Concepts: Jiva: Life-monads (units of life), infinite in number, eternally blessed and omniscient, principles of goodness. Ajiva: Non-living matter, obscuring and entangling jiva , principle of evil. Karma (literally "action"): material force binding an individual to the round of birth and rebirth as a result of any (even morally good in our sense) activity. Omniscience: Experiential understanding of the true inner nature of reality. This kind of knowledge is considered the key to "salvation." Nirvana: State of liberation where the evil influence of karma has been completely eliminated; the liberated soul's continued isolated existence on the motionless summit of the world.

The name Hinduism means the civilization of the Hindus (originally, the inhabitants of the land of the Indus River). Introduced c. 1830 by English writers, the term properly denotes the Indian civilization of approximately the last 2,000 years, which gradually evolved from Vedism, the religion of the ancient Indo-European peoples who settled in India in the last centuries of the 2nd millenium B.C.E. Because it integrates a large variety of heterogenous elements, Hinduism constitutes a very complex but largely continuous whole, and since it covers the whole of life, it has religious, social, economic, literary, and artistic aspects. As a religion, Hinduism is a diverse conglomerate of doctrines, cults, and ways of life. The diversity of Hinduism makes compiling a list of Internet resources related to Hinduism problematic. Many of the World Wide Web links are personal and highly artistic, which makes it sometimes difficult to find scholarly material valuable to the Religious Studies student. Listed below are what we consider the best available Internet resources on Hinduism.

Table of Contents Parallel to Buddhism another religion has flourished in India since ancient times. This is the Jaina religion or Jainism. The term Jaina or Jain implies follower of Jina which means 'the victorious one'. Jina is the formal title of the 24 spiritual teachers (Tirthankaras) of the Jaina religion. In this sense the term 'Jina' is similar to the term 'Buddha. Popularly, Mahavira who was the last Jaina Tirthankara is confounded to be the founder of this faith.

History of Jainism Though many believe Jainism and Buddhism are contemporary religions, Jainism predates Buddhism by a few decades. Both Jainism and Buddhism were originated by Kshatriya (warrior) class in a reaction against ceremonialism and orthodoxy of the Hindu religion. They both rejected the caste system.
With the coming of Jainism and Buddhism a new epoch began in the history of India. Jain religion has survived in India for almost 2,500 years and is the only Sanskritic non-Hindu religion to have done so.
The name Jainism derives from the Sanskrit word 'jina' (conqueror). According to Jain tradition, the main proponent of the religion, Mahavira (Great Hero) was born in 599 BC near Patna in Bihar. He was born in a Kshatriya family. At the age of 28 he became an ascetic and meditated for a long time till he attained enlightenment. He preached the principles of Jainism for 30 years and died at Pavapuri (Bihar) in 527 BC.
Mahavira is the 24th Tirthankar (liberated souls) in a series of Tirthankars, stretching back through Parshva (the 23rd) to Rishabha. Rishabha, the first Tirthankara, is the original founder of Jainism. It is believed that there were an infinite number of Tirthankars before him, and there are an infinite number to come, although the next is not due for approximately 81,500 years.

  • Belief in Deity: Humans who have destroyed their karmas achieve Infinite Knowledge, Infinite Preception, Infinite Power and Infinite Bliss. They become Gods, or Jina, and as such will never suffer rebirth again. There is no Creator God, and Jinas do not manage the universe or humankind, which operate under their own laws (cosmic and karmic). The souls of Jinas retain their individual identities. Twenty-four Jinas are worshipped as inspirational bridges for others to achieve liberation, the latest being the founder of the religion. Any living being may become a God once enlightened. As more people become enlightened, the number of Gods becomes innumerable.
  • Incarnations: No incarnations. Gods are humans who attain enlightment and are liberated from rebirth.
