A more significant event of his fruitful initial sermon after omniscience to an audience which included " Indrabhuti Gautama", a Brahmin who was a scholar of repute, great authority on Vedic-Scriptures and exceedingly proud of his knowledge. Through his encounter Gautama became the chief disciple - ' Ganadhara'. Lord Mahavira had eleven Ganadharas as his inner circle. Lord Mahavira attained Siddhatva in the year 527 B. C. "In conclusion let me assert my conviction that Jainism is an original system quite distinct and independant from all others: and that therefore it is of great importance for the study of philosophical thought and religious life in ancient India." - Dr. Hermann Jacobi. "Jainism is of a very high order , its important teachings are based upon science. The more the scientific knowledge advances the more that Jain teachings will be proved." L.P. Tessitore, Italy. Glimpses of the April-July 2004 Issue Quotations from scriptures: Selections from TATTVAARTH SUTRA TATTVAARTH SUTRA is a brief treatise on TATTVAs - aspects of reality. In the process of discussing the aspects of reality, Acharya Umaswati presents the theory of karma and the path to salvation. In previous issues, rational perception and rational knowledge were explained. In this chapter, Acharya Umaswati begins the discussion of soul - the first and basic aspect of reality.
Quotations From Acharya Umaswati's TATTVAARTH SUTRA
All worldly souls have a mantle of karmic matter associated with them, while the liberated souls are free from karmic bondage. Through self-endeavor, a worldly being brings about transformations in the karmic matter in its possession. These transformations include subsidence - the state during which operation of certain karmic matter does not take place, destruction - elimination of certain karmic matter, destruction-cum-subsidence - the state during which elimination of certain karmas and subsidence of other karmas occurs, and operation - fruition of karmas.

Jains are divided into two major sects; the Digambara (meaning "sky clad") sect and the Svetambara (meaning "white clad") sect. Each of these sects is also divided into subgroups. The two sects agree on the basics of Jainism, but disagree on:
  • details of the life of Mahavira, the spiritual status of women, whether monks should wear clothes, rituals, which texts should be accepted as scripture.
The Digambara sect is more austere, and is closer in its ways to the Jains at the time of Mahavira. Digambara monks live completely naked Basic differences Both groups accept the basic Jain philosophy and the five basic vows. The philosophical differences between the groups mostly affect monks and nuns, or the very pious.
  • Scripture: Digambaras and Svetambaras disagree as to which books constitute Jain scripture. Women: Digambaras believe that women cannot achieve liberation without first being reborn as a man.

Jainism
The legendary founder of Jainism was called Rishabha, but claims that he lived many millions of years ago are obviously exaggerated. This first Tirthankara (literally "maker of the river-crossing") is said to have invented cooking, writing, pottery, painting, and sculpture, the institution of marriage and ceremonies for the dead. Not much else is recorded about Rishabha and the next twenty Tirthankaras, but the ancient Jaina tradition that there were ascetic religious teachers in India before the coming of the Vedic Aryans is likely from evidence found in the Harappan culture. The twenty-second Tirthankara, Arishtanemi, is mentioned in the Kalpa Sutra . All of the Tirthankaras were Kshatriyas, and Arishtanemi was the son of King Ashvasena of Varanasi (Benares) and cousin of Krishna, who is supposed to have lived during the great Bharata war probably about 900 BC. According to legend Krishna negotiated his marriage to princess Rajamati. However, when Arishtanemi discovered the great number of deer and other animals to be sacrificed at his wedding, he changed his mind to prevent their slaughter, brooded over the cruelty and violence of human society, and soon renounced the world to seek and find enlightenment. The twenty-third Tirthankara, Parshva, probably lived in the eighth century BC. Legends connect him with snakes, one of whom he saved from fire when a Brahmin ascetic was about to burn a log where it was hiding. He married a princess, and up to the age of thirty he lived in great splendor and happiness as a householder. Then he gave up all his wealth to become an ascetic. After 84 days of intense meditation he became enlightened and taught as a saint for seventy years.

JAINISM
The word Jainism comes from the Sanskrit word for saint "jinah" which dreives from "Jayati" meaning "he conquers" - thus they are conquers of mortal bondage. Along with Hinduism and Buddhism, Jainism is one of the three most ancient of India's religions still in existence. Although Jainism has [fewer] followers than Hinduism and Sikhism it has had an influence on Indian culture for over 2,500 years, making significant contributions in philosophy, logic, art and architecture, grammar, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, and literature. Lord Mahavira is regarded as the last of a line of 24 holy and spiritually enlightened beings, the Tirthankaras. Mahavira was born in India in 599 BC. At the age of thirty he gave up his life as a wealthy prince and became a religious asceti. He was a reformer and propagator of the religion. Jainism arose as a separate religion in India. It was founded at least at the same time as Hinduism or even before that (as some historians believe). At the heart of right conduct for Jains lie the five great vows:
  • Nonviolence (Ahimsa) not to cause harm to any living beings
  • Truthfulness (Satya) to speak the harmless truth only
  • Non-stealing (Asteya)not to take anything not properly given
  • Chastity (Brahmacharya) not to indulge in sensual pleasure
  • Non-possession/Non-attachment (Aparigraha) complete detachment from people, places, and material things.

    http://www.engr.mun.ca/~asharan/bihar/jainism.html
    THE JAINISM
The followers of this religion believe that its roots within India are even older than the Brahmanism (Hinduism) which they believe came with the people ( the Aryans ) migrating from other parts of the world (near the Caspian Sea ). The naked statues resembling the Jain monks amongst the remains of the Indus Valley Civilization, do substantiate some of the claims. However, there is no conclusive evidence that most of the concepts in Hinduism came from outside India. In fact, even the Aryan invasion theory has not yet been proven . In those days, people from other parts of the world came to India in a gradual manner. India offered milder climatic conditions and where, agriculture was better developed than several other places in the neighbouring countries. Gradually, these people adopted the life style prevalent in India and that is how, it is a country made up of different kinds of people and in real sense, it is a melting pot.
Jainism lays heavy emphasis on non-violence (ahimsa) and the believers of this religion, whether a monk or a householder, follow a very strict, well disciplined life. In fact, the householders are supposed to evolve to the monkhood in the later stages of life as was the case with the Hinduism in the Vedic era.
The first Tirthankar, Rishabhdev flourished prior to the Indus Valley Civilization and has been referred to as Lord Vishnu in the Puraanas. This name is also mentioned in the Vedas. This shows the inseparability of the two religions in the earlier times. His sons, Bharat and Bahubali (his 57 feet high statue at Shravanabelgo in Karnataka is quite famous) are well known in the Indian history.
