Last Updated : June 09,2004 Along with Buddhism, Jainism is the most important reform movement to separate from the main body of Hinduism and establish an independent unit. The word is derived from Jina ("Victor," or "Conqueror") implying final victory over bondage to life's misery. Jainism has the universal message of nonviolence. The absence of a creator god in Jainism can be understood as a reaction against the nature worship of early Vedic religion, the priestly order of Brahmanism, and the theology of the Upanishads. Jain arts and architecture has enriched the artistic heritage of India. Jainism was founded by Rishabha, and attained a major status in India at the time of Mahavira , who was born in about 599 B.C. in Northern India, in the town of Vyshali, in the present day Bihar , in a royal family. When he was about 30 years old, after he had been a householder, Mahavira decided to abandon his aristocratic surroundings in favor of an ascetic life. He cast aside his fine raiment, gave away his treasures, and embarked upon a severe regimen. For twelve years he underwent castigation, enduring bodily and spiritual injury, and emerged a teacher of many monks, a renowned preacher, and a profounder of a new religion. Chief among the tenets of Jainism is the deification of Mahavira. The

When the fully enlightened teachers do not appear and when the disciples have disappeared, the wisdom of the self-enlightened ones will arise completely without a teacher. - Naagaarjuna's Mulamaadhyamaka Kaarikaa (2nd century CE) Introduction Everything has a reason - or atleast that is the basic assumption underlying philosophy itself and the quest for that reason is the fundamental objective of the science. So the first thing to consider : the reason for developing this website. What causes even more concern is that there was hardly any protest voiced against the unfounded assertion of the columnist. But again there's little reason for surprise as the vast majority of 'educated' Indians have very little knowledge of the intellectual and spiritual underpinnings of their own culture. Due to the motivated brainwashing of the colonialists and their Indian successors - the Marxists - who have strategically well entrenched themselves in the institutes of both education and media, the modern Indian grows up viewing his own culture as "primitive and backward" and looks up to and apes the culture of the West, without realizing that such practice effectively renders him devoid of substance psychologically and gradually gives rise to an inferiority complex thus sapping his creative juices. Even more important it robs him of the benefits - cultural and spiritual - of belonging to a millennia old civilization. For if endurance can be used as a criterion to judge the vitality of a civilization, then the Indian civilization comes out with top marks as it has survived the ravages of time and often against insurmountable odds. While its age old peers - the Egyptian, the Mesopotamian, the Greek, the Roman, the Chinese civilizations - have all perished (in our view the Chinese civilization is also a thing of the past as its peoples have abandoned the teachings of Confucious and Lao Tze and embraced the ideology of Marx and Engels), the Indian Civilization still holds out against the onslaught of time, it inner flame burning pure and true.

Orality to literacy: Transition in Early Tamil Society
IRAVATHAM MAHADEVAN From the forthcoming publication: Early Tamil Epigraphy : From the Earliest Times to the Sixth Century A.D. by Iravatham Mahadevan (Harvard Oriental Series 62), simultaneously published in India by Cre-A:, Chennai, and in U.S.A. by Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. THE Brahmi script reached Upper South India (Andhra-Karnataka regions) and the Tamil country at about the same time during the 3rd century B.C. in the wake of the southern spread of Jainism and Buddhism. However, the results of introduction of writing in these two regions were markedly different. The most interesting aspects of Tamil literacy, when compared with the situation in contemporary Upper South India, are: (i) its much earlier commencement; (ii) use of the local language for all purposes from the beginning; and (iii) its popular democratic character.
Tamil-Brahmi rock inscription of King Atan Cel Irumporai at Pugalur. 2nd century A.D. It records the endowment of a cave shelter at the investiture of the King's grandson as heir-apparent.

Lord Mahavir and Jain Religion Lord Mahavir was the twenty-fourth and the last Tirthankara of the Jain religion. According to Jain philosophy, all Tirthankaras were born as human beings but they have attained a state of perfection or enlightenment through meditation and self realization. They are the Gods of Jains. Tirthankaras are also known as Arihants or Jinas
Tirthankara
One who establishes the four fold order (Monk, Nun, Layman, and Laywoman) of religion.
Arihant
One who destroys his inner enemies like anger, greed, passion, ego, etc.
Jina
One who conquers his inner enemies like anger, greed, passion, ego, etc. The followers of Jina are known as Jains. Mahavir was born in 599 B.C. as a prince in Bihar, India. At the age of 30, he left his family and royal household, gave up his worldly possessions, including clothing and become a monk. He spent the next twelve years in deep silence and meditation to conquer his desires and feelings. He went without food for long periods. He carefully avoided harming or annoying other living beings including animals, birds, and plants. His ways of meditation, days of austerities, and mode of behavior furnish a beautiful example for monks and nuns in religious life. His spiritual pursuit lasted for twelve years.

36. Vegetarianism Is Not A Synonym For Ahimsa
An article attempting to define, classify, and distinguish between the two facets of jainism.
http://www.anekant.org/vegetarianism_is_not_a_synonym_for_ahimsa.htm
These days it appears that we have mistaken Ahimsä as a synonym for Jainism and Vegetarianism as a synonym for Ahimsä. Hence a person, who is vegetarian considers himself or herself a true Jain; and thus has the right to condemn anyone who is not a vegetarian!!! Let us first examine who Jains are: “Jains are followers of JINA, the conqueror of inner enemies”. These inner enemies are anger , greed , pride and deceit. These arise out of attachment (räg) leading to greed and pride, and aversion (dvesh) leading to deceit and anger. Now let us examine some fundamental teaching of Jainism: Ahimsä (Non-violence), Anekäntaväda (Multiplicity of viewpoints), Syädaväda (Relativism,Satya (Truth), Achurya (Not stealing) and Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness). Ahimsä or Non-violence is just one part of the Jain teachings and is based on love and kindness for all forms of life, as Jains believe that all life forms (Plants and animals) are equal, have souls and are capable of attaining salvation. How do we define Ahimsä? It has been pointed out in Jain scriptures that even the thought of evil is as bad as the action resulting in injury. It takes non-violence to its highest form in thoughts, words and deeds. The killing, which is done through the careless activity of thought, speech and body, is

JAINISM
See Art Gallery
Founded in the 5th century BC by Mahavira (599-527), at the same time than Buddhism.
- Buddhism is the "middle way", Jainism is the "most strict religion" with two Denominations: The "Diganbara" (naked) are monks and nuns with vow of "nudity", living in monasteries. The "Svatembara" (white-robed), have 5 rules:
1- Destroy no life.
2- Do not lie.
3- Practice charity.
4- Practice chastity.
5- Posses nothing, want nothing.
6 Devotion of whole life to task (Moshka).
Like Buddhism, it is a rebellion against Hindu life: No gods, no priests, no caste system... but they have the Law of Karma and Reincarnation.
- "Jina", "the conqueror": To obtain "Nirvana", Mahavira left his rich home and wandered for 13 years with a spartan life of denial of all worldly things, even walking nude... until enlightenment suddenly came to him after meditating for 2½ days under saia tree on a river bank in Nepal... here enlightenment is called "Jina" (the conqueror, victorious), and from "Jina" comes the name "Jainism". - It is a most paradoxical religion: They rejected the gods of Hinduism, but now practically every existing thing is a god: The mountains and earth and stones have a "soul", every plant, every animal is a god... this leads to respect for the sanctity of life: They carry a small broom to sweep all forms of life from their path, and even they ware masks over their months so as to not accidentally swallow flies or other insects...
