Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), was the first president born in a log cabin. Earlier presidents had come from well-to-do families. Jackson, the son of poor Scotch-Irish immigrants, became an orphan at 14. He grew up on the frontier of the Carolinas. Then he moved to Tennessee, where he became a successful lawyer and landowner. Jackson won fame as an Indian fighter and as a general in the War of 1812. He was nicknamed "Old Hickory" because of his toughness.
Jackson was a founder of the Democratic Party. He won election as president in 1828 partly because his party was so well organized throughout the nation. Jackson's military fame also attracted many voters.
Jackson's presidency
Jackson made the presidency a more powerful office, though still subject to the will of the people. As president, he disapproved of many actions by Congress and vetoed 12 bills, more than all previous presidents combined. Many of these bills sought to increase federal spending on domestic improvements. The Democrats believed that the states, not the national government, should pay for such projects. Jackson's strong actions, particularly during disputes involving the Bank of the United States and the rights of states, won him much praise. He became known as a champion of the people.
The 20-year period after Jackson became president is often called the Age of Jackson. It has been described as the years of "the rise of the common man." Under Jackson's leadership, his followers tried to win reforms in the states. They demanded state regulation and inspection of banks. They fought for the right of workers to organize labor unions, and called for a 10-hour workday. They sought adoption of the secret ballot in elections. When Jackson was reelected President in 1832, he became the first president who had been nominated by a national political convention. Historians often use the term Jacksonian Democracy to describe the reforms and reform movements of the period from 1828 to 1850.

The election of 1828 was partially a rematch of the previous election. The contest pitted Jackson against incumbent President Adams. The election pitted an experienced President against a popular war hero from humble beginnings. It was the first election in which there was a popular vote for the President. Jackson received solid support from the Western states, as well as, the South. Adams maintained his support in New England.

Andrew Jackson
He was born before the United States was a nation. He was born to immigrant parents. Jackson was the only first generation American to become president. He was one of six Presidents born in a log cabin. Historian can't agree if he was born in North or South Carolina. He was a Presbyterian. At the age of 13, he joined the Army to fight in the Revolutionary War. He was the only president who served in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He was a lawyer by trade. At one time he owned slaves. He was one of three presidents to have adopted children. He was involved in many duels. In 1806, in a duel against Charles Dickinson over some unflattering remarks made about Jackson's wife, Jackson was wounded. He then fired, killing Dickinson. The bullet that wounded Jackson was lodged near his heart and could not be safely removed. He carried that bullet in his chest for the rest of his life. For a number of years he carried two bullets in his body. In 1828, Jackson made one of the first campaign tours. He traveled to New Oreleans to campaign for president.

Sophie Tucker, was born Sophia Abuza on January 13 , 1884, in a farmhouse along the road her mother traveled as she emigrated from Russia. They landed at their U.S. destination and joined Sophie's father during an era when millions of Eastern Europeans, many of them Jewish families like the Abuzas, opted for immigration to America. Sophie Abuza began her career as an entertainer while working in Hartford, Connecticut at her father's restaurant, where she earned good tips for adding songs and humor to the service. In her early teens she also performed with her sister at Hartford's Riverside Park amphitheater. After an unsuccessful marriage to one Louis Tuck, she ran away to New York to become a professional entertainer, leaving her infant son in the care of her sister. One of Sophie Tucker's first jobs, in 1907, was at the 125th Street Theater where her strong contralto voice made her a powerful 'Coon Shouter,' a white performer who, in the 19th and early 20th century, sang as a blackfaced minstrel. Tucker often asked to perform without blackface, but was told that she was too "big and ugly" to be featured. When her makeup was lost in transit one day, the opportunity to perform without blackface presented itself and the audience took to her warmly.

Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even only one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

    VETO MESSAGE.
WASHINGTON, July 10, 1832 To the Senate:
The bill "to modify and continue" the act entitled "An act to incorporate the subscribers to the Bank of the United States" was presented to me on the 4th July instant. Having considered it with that solemn regard to the principles of the Constitution which the day was calculated to inspire, and come to the conclusion that it ought not to become a law, I herewith return it to the Senate, in which it originated, with my objections.
A bank of the United States is in many respects convenient for the Government and useful to the people. Entertaining this opinion, and deeply impressed with the belief that some of the powers and privileges possessed by the existing bank are unauthorized by the Constitution, subversive of the rights of the States, and dangerous to the liberties of the people, I felt it my duty at an early period of my Administration to call the attention of Congress to the practicability of organizing an institution combining all its advantages and obviating these objections. I sincerely regret that in the act before me I can perceive none of those modifications of the bank charter which are necessary, in my opinion, to make it compatible with justice, with sound policy, or with the Constitution of our country.
The present corporate body, denominated the president, directors, and company of the Bank of the United States, will have existed at the time this act is intended to take effect twenty years. It enjoys an exclusive privilege of banking under the authority of the General Government, a monopoly of its favor and support, and, as a necessary consequence, almost a monopoly of the foreign and domestic exchange. The powers, privileges, and favors bestowed upon it in the original charter, by increasing the value of the stock far above its par value, operated as a gratuity of many millions to the stockholders.
