    Introduction
Every year since 1977, the ACM has organized the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest . This contest, which consists of a regional qualifying contest and the Finals, provides college students with the opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their programming skills. During this contest, teams consisting of three students and one computer are to solve as many of the given problems as possible within 5 hours. The team with the most problems solved wins, where ``solved'' means producing the right outputs for a set of (secret) test inputs. Though the individual skills of the team members are important, in order to be a top team it is necessary to make use of synergy within the team. As participants in the 1995 Contest Finals (two of us also participated in the 1994 Finals), we have given a lot of thought to strategy and teamwork. In this article we summarize our observations from various contests, and we hope that if you ever participate in this contest (or any other) that this information will be valuable to you.

I'M BACK Hope you guys have been coding hard, staying out of trouble, and stopping by now and then even with the lack of posts. It has been a very stressful couple of weeks to say the least. I am back up and running... thanks to Tim at BCOM computers in Edmonton. My system is running and the temperature is stable. I ended up switching back to Intel, and my case now has a small army of fans. It's nice to have a computer again! So where is the stress you ask? Well... being without a computer drove me a little crazy. Finally getting the computer up and running was complete bliss, checking my bank account last night once I got the computer back online ruined my weekend. Someone scanned my bank card, and cleaned out my account. I found out yesterday at 8pm when I noticed 4 interact withdrawls made June 5th. At first I thought it was my loan payment coming out early. So I called the bank to check. That's when I was told that I withdrew the money on saturday and that it was not a bank withdrawl. From the time I called the bank at 8pm till the time I finished talking with the police 3 1/2 hours had passed. All I can do is hope their "fraud investigation" finds the theives. Although the phrase "fraud investigation" sounds more like they are working against the victim. Needless to say it hasn't been a fun weekend.

I'm adding a new section where I will be presenting pages for classic video games. I'm starting off by allowing 5 people to host video game pages on my server, this includes MANY benefits. I hope eventually to have 20+ game sites on my page hosting graphics movies etc.. on Final Fantasy 1-9, Zelda 1-6, and all the other truly classic games that are out there. Just to let you know, I don't believe in having 1 zelda page for all six zelda's, people spread themselves to thin when they do that, one page per one game. For more information please visit Here

Thanks everybody! I added that "Please Grab The Gator" page before all downloads last month, and in its first month it covered half of the costs of this site! I appreciate the time you take to do that, I realize that it's a lot to ask, but it'll help put back into this site. I'm ALMOST breaking even now :-) With the money from the Gator I'm going to buy new books that I will not only review, but learn so that I can publish tutorials based on the knowledge from those books. Thanks again for Grabbing The Gator!

You will see Dictionaries, How to cite this glossary, and How you can contribute . When jumping to an entry (by clicking on the link), you should find that entry on your screen (usually at the top, but it depends on your browser). If you do not, please report that to me (click on my name above). In any case, you will be in the file of that letter. For example, if you click on Lagrangian, you will be in the L file (entries that begin with L). At the bottom of each file, you will find a link to Notation that will appear in the second window. The following are of general interest (you should read them if this is your first time here).

(Of course I'll expect *you* to supply any corrections! :-) This list is a bit of a hodge-podge, containing everything that I thought *might* be useful. Hence it is HUGH and not very well edited. To the reader: constructive criticism and commentary is welcome! Introduction to Thoughtful Programming This is also the view of businesses in the increasingly information-driven economy of the United States. They believe that software should be developed and shipped as quickly as possible to make it to the market on time. If this involves cutting corners in terms of runtime speed, code complexity, size, system requirements, or bug testing, it is considered a sacrifice which can be remedied after the product ships. After all, the business has a bottom line, and if the code works, marketing is perfectly willing to sell it to people. Now, it is doubtful that many programmers, perhaps after some hard thought, would consider this kind of software beautiful. It is certainly suboptimal in many aspects already mentioned, there are certainly sections of code which could be rewritten or done away with, perhaps it was written in a scripting language when it should have been written in a lower level language, etc. And let's not forget the hundreds or thousands of bugs that still lie in the code because the deadline was hit. This is not the kind of code that a programmer would be proud to admit to writing. For years now, the computer industry, largely in marketing efforts, has given the average consumer the impression that computing technology is abundant and ubiquitous

  • What's on this page? I'm interested in producing complexity out of simple parts. Most of the topics I cover on this page are related to my interest in complexity. I do not cover all topics related to game programming. I try to avoid topics specific to one platform, such as graphics, sound, compilers, and specific libraries. I prefer ideas to source code, because I find it easier to go from an idea to code than from code to an idea. Most of the links on this page lead to other sites.

(a source of information about the field of genetic programming and the field of genetic and evolutionary computation)
Genetic programming (GP) is an automated method for creating a working computer program from a high-level problem statement of a problem. Genetic programming starts from a high-level statement of “what needs to be done” and automatically creates a computer program to solve the problem. There are now 36 instances where genetic programming has automatically produced a result that is competitive with human performance , including 15 instances where genetic programming has created an entity that either infringes or duplicates the functionality of a previously patented 20 th -century invention, 6 instances where genetic programming has done the same with respect to a 21 st -centry invention, and 2 instances where genetic programming has created a patentable new invention. Given these results, we say that “Genetic programming now routinely delivers high-return human-competitive machine intelligence ” Click here for our definitions of “human-competitive,”
