181. Windows Sockets Programming
Links to get started with WinSock programming. (Ed Snible)

Windows Sockets Programming
This page is designed to give the programmer enough information to know where to look to get the actual information.
What is Windows Sockets?
Windows Sockets, or Winsock , is a .DLL which allows applications to talk over a network, usually the Internet. The .DLL is usually called WINSOCK.DLL.
Where do I get Windows Sockets?
Unlike all other .DLLs, there isn't an official WINSOCK.DLL in the sense that there is say a 'common dialog' COMMDLG.DLL or a 'control 3d' CTL3DV2.DLL. When you get WINSOCK, you get it from a particular vendor. Each different version is slightly different in terms of how it is configured, but once it is configured properly each .DLL should have the same functions and properly written applications will work with whatever Winsock you are using.
Popular Winsocks are:
Trumpet Winsock
This Winsock is shareware. It has the ability to talk over an Ethernet board or over a modem to an Internet provider, but it can't do both simultaneously. Note that if you don't have a network card or an Internet provider account you can still write and test programs running both the client and server on your machine, provided you have a serial port. You can FTP the old unlimited Trumpet from ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/.d3/ibmpc/win3/winsock/stacks/trumpwsk/twsk20b.zip

Systems Programming Aptitude Test
Author: Jack M. Wolfe, Ph.D. Date introduced: 1973 Administration time: 3 hours Available from Walden in the US and Canada only. For other countries, call for additional information at 800-361-4908.
Purpose
To evaluate the aptitudes and potentials of systems programming candidates of all experience levels, for work in all types of systems programming tasks.
General Description
The SPAT is a generalized aptitude test designed to measure the essential traits of a systems programming position. A systems programmer or software programmer is usually involved in highly intricate programming problems relating to the programs that run the computer hardware, operating systems, peripherals and internal memory functions. The SPAT test consists of five work exercises which require candidates to demonstrate superior logic, follow highly intricate instructions, and document clearly and concisely. High ability to generalize from a specific data set, and the understanding of intricate sets of operations requiring simultaneous steps are also demanded by the problems. The problems are presented in increasing order of difficulty.
Positions for which the test is appropriate
The SPAT test can be used to screen both inexperienced and experienced applicants. This test also measures the ability to work in systems programming, identifying promotability and skill levels.

183. MIT Technology Review And Aspect-Oriented And Adaptive Programming
The respected publication MIT Technology Review predicts that the power of aspectorientation to separate previously difficult-to-disentangle concerns will make it a big success.

MIT Technology Review and Aspect-Oriented and Adaptive Programming
The MIT Technology Review in the January/February 2001 issue, has selected "ten emerging areas of technology that will soon have a profound impact on the economy and on how we live and work" MIT Technology Review TOP TEN Article . One of the ten areas is Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP); the title of the article is "Untangling Code" and the innovator that is highlighted is Gregor Kiczales on pages 110-111 Untangling Code Article . Gregor and his team have done influential work to develop AOP and to promote AOP to a wider community. European Summary of AOP article focusses on Adaptive Programming Gregor Kiczales' insight is that "better separation of concerns" is an important driving force behind better programming languages. Numerous techniques have been invented to improve separation of concerns and to control tangling. In Gregor's view, AOP is one technique to reduce tangling namely tangling that comes from ad-hoc implementation of crosscutting concerns. The article refers to Northeastern University twice: "The idea of aspects has been around for many years and with many different names. It's called "adaptive programming" at Northeastern University, "subject-oriented programming" at IBM, ... There is a table entitled: "Others Untangling Code" Organization Project Mehmet Aksit Composition Filters (University of Twente) Karl Lieberherr Adaptive Programming (Northeastern University) IBM Research Hyper/J System for Java (York Town Heights) Mira Mezini Enhancing modularity and (University of Siegen) reusability of A-O software

184. Programming Games
Offers all kinds of games in which one competes by writing code and having the programs then compete against each other.

Programming Games and Contests
What I'm after are games in which one competes by writing code and and having the programs then compete against each other. The most straightforward exemplars of this are the ubiquitous bot games, such as the *-robots games. I'm particularly interested in ongoing competitions. Typically run either periodically or in King of the Hill (KotH) type of competitions. Any additions, deletions, changes or other comments cheerfully accepted
Robots Games
The "competitors" in these games are robots; usually one with a gun to shoot at other competitors with. You supply the brains for the robot in the form of a program of one kind or another. The oldest of this kind that I know about is CROBOTS, where the robot is programmed in a "C-like" language. This was written by Tom Poindexter, who later created tclrobots. I first encountered CROBOTS on the Amiga 1000, which probably means it was circa 1985. I recently received an email from "Jim", who said Back in 1983 I used to play a game called Robot Wars on the Apple 2. The robots were programmed in an assembly type language and then they fought in an arena. Each turn allowed your bot to go through one iteration of your program. I do not know the author. Jim That game might pre-date CROBOTS, or it might not (I don't know when CROBOTS was first written). Anyone have more information about early BOTS games?
