THE GENERAL
BY ROGER EBERT Buster Keaton was not the Great Stone Face so much as a man who kept his composure in the center of chaos. Other silent actors might mug to get a point across, but Keaton remained observant and collected. That's one reason his best movies have aged better than those of his rival, Charlie Chaplin. He seems like a modern visitor to the world of the silent clowns. Consider an opening sequence in ``The General'' (1927), his masterpiece about a Southern railway engineer who has ``only two loves in his life''his locomotive and the beautiful Annabelle Lee. Early in the film, Keaton, dressed in his Sunday best, walks to his girl's house. He is unaware that two small boys are following him, marching in lockstepand that following them is Annabelle Lee herself (Marion Mack). He arrives at her door. She watches unobserved. He polishes his shoes on the backs of his pants legs, and then knocks, pauses, looks about, and sees her standing right behind him. This moment would have inspired an overacted double-take from many other silent comedians. Keaton plays it with his face registering merely heightened interest. They go inside. He sits next to her on the sofa. He becomes aware that the boys have followed them in. His face reflects slight unhappiness. He rises, puts on his hat as if to leave and opens the door, displaying such courtesy you would think the boys were his guests. The boys walk out and he closes the door on them.

PART-TIME TRAINING FOR GENERAL PRACTICE Introduction
GP training in the UK can be done part time/flexibly. A mixture of full and part time posts is also acceptable. Part time/flexible training should be organised in consultation with the GP director to ensure that it complies with these requirements. Person-specific guidance on part time/flexible training is available from the Joint Committee on request. For financial reasons, it will not always be possible for deaneries and/or trusts to offer part time/flexible training to all trainees who apply for it. Regulatory Framework
  • Both the hospital component and the general practice component of any part time training that begun/begins after 31 December 1994 must have included/must include one period of full-time employment lasting at least a week. (1) and (2) above apply to UK training only. The JCPTGP will consider EEA and overseas training of at least 50% of full time.

Gen. Tommy Franks says that if the United States is hit with a weapon of mass destruction that inflicts large casualties, the Constitution will likely be discarded in favor of a military form of government. Franks, who successfully led the U.S. military operation to liberate Iraq, expressed his worries in an extensive interview he gave to the men’s lifestyle magazine Cigar Aficionado. In the magazine’s December edition, the former commander of the military’s Central Command warned that if terrorists succeeded in using a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) against the U.S. or one of our allies, it would likely have catastrophic consequences for our cherished republican form of government. Discussing the hypothetical dangers posed to the U.S. in the wake of Sept. 11, Franks said that “the worst thing that could happen” is if terrorists acquire and then use a biological, chemical or nuclear weapon that inflicts heavy casualties.

    Gravity and Time.
Consider three clocks. Clocks 1 and 2 are mounted on a rotating disk, with clock 1 exactly at the centre, and clock 2 fixed on the rim, and clock 3 is sitting at rest with respect to the centre of the disk. Note that the disk exerts a force on clock 2 which forces it to follow a circular path; since, without this force, clock 2 would move in a straight line, it is clear that the force and the resultant acceleration are both directed towards the centre of the disk. Clocks 1 and 3 are not moving relative to one another (there is some rotation involved, but their relative position in space does not change with time); thus, as far as Special Relativity is concerned, they keep the same time. However, clock 2 is moving with respect to clock 3; thus clock 2 is running slow as seen by clock 3. Since clocks 1 and 3 keep the same time, this means that clock 2 runs slow compared to clock 1, even though clocks 1 and 2 have no relative translatory motion. (Note that, since clock 2 is not in an inertial frame, Special Relativity does not make any statement about its timekeeping - this is a new effect) . Finally, consider a clock situated on the disk somewhere between clocks 1 and 2; the acceleration of such a clock is less than that of clock 2, and since it is also moving more slowly than clock 2, it is running less slowly.

    http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/thrsteq.html
Thrust is the force which moves an aircraft through the air. Thrust is generated by the propulsion system of the airplane How is thrust generated? Thrust is a mechanical force which is generated through the reaction of accelerating a mass of gas, as explained by Newton's third law of motion. The gas or working fluid is accelerated to the rear and the engine and aircraft are accelerated in the opposite direction. To accelerate the gas, we need some kind of propulsion system. We will discuss the details of various propulsion systems on some other pages. For right now, let us just think of the propulsion system as some machine which accelerates a gas. From Newton's second law of motion, we can define a force F to be the change in momentum of an object with a change in time. Momentum is the object's mass m times the velocity V . So, between two times and , the force is given by: F = ((m * V)2 - (m * V)1) / (t2 - t1) If we keep the mass constant and just change the velocity with time we obtain the simple force equation - force equals mass time acceleration a F = m * a If we are dealing with a solid , keeping track of the mass is relatively easy; the molecules of a solid are closely bound to each other and a solid retains its shape. But if we are dealing with a fluid (liquid or gas) and particularly if we are dealing with a moving fluid, keeping track of the mass gets tricky. For a moving fluid, the important parameter is the

w Home General Council - Introduction Back General Council - Introduction The General Councils of the four "Ancient" Scottish universities are advisory bodies to their respective universities made up principally of all the graduates. They may "take into consideration all questions affecting the well-being and prosperity of the University" and "make representations from time to time on such questions to the University Court". These activities are carried out by half-yearly meetings whilst a Business Committee prepares the papers put forward to these meetings. The General Council is also charged with providing people to serve on the University Court, of whom there must be at least four, and of electing the Chancellor. The origins of the General Council lie in the reforming spirit of the 19th century. The universities at that time suffered from varying degrees of difficulty. Glasgow was relatively successful. It was felt that Aberdeen would benefit from the union of its two institutions. St Andrews was slowly recovering from the lean times of the 18th century but still had problems with dilapidated buildings. However, it was the problems of government at Edinburgh University, a dispute between the professors and the Town Council, ending in the courts, that led to the Royal Commission on the Universities and Colleges of Scotland, established in 1826. This Commission reported in 1831 after exhaustive work and recommended that university courts look after administrative and financial matters, while academic senates would determine matters related to teaching.

from Chapter I: Its Intellectual Character
The spirit and the principle of the synthesis which all true philosophers should endeavour to establish, have now been defined. I proceed to explain the method that should be followed in the task, and the peculiar difficulty with which it is attended. The object of the synthesis will not be secured until it embraces the whole extent of its domain, the moral and practical departments as well as the intellectual. But these three departments cannot be dealt with simultaneously. They follow an order of succession which, so far from dissevering them from the whole to which they belong, is seen when carefully examined to be a natural result of their mutual dependence. The truth is, and it is a truth of great importance, that Thoughts must be systematised before Feelings, Feelings before Actions. It is doubtless, owing to a confused apprehension of this truth, that philosophers hitherto, in framing their systems of human nature, have dealt almost exclusively with our intellectual faculties. The necessity of commencing with the coordination of ideas is not merely due to the fact that the relations of these, being more simple and more susceptible of demonstration, form a useful logical preparation for the remainder of the task. On closer examination we find a more important, though less obvious reason. If this first portion of the work be once efficiently performed, it is the foundation of all the rest. In what remains no very serious difficulty will occur, provided always that we content ourselves with that degree of completeness which the ultimate purpose of the system requires.

The Twin Paradox: The "General Relativity" Explanation
Calling this the "General Relativity Explanation" raises some people's hackles; I'll say why below . That's why "General Relativity" is in quotes, and why "gravitational" is in scare-quotes for much of this entry.
    Some background
This explanation relies on a couple of assertions that are true, according to GR. (We postpone asking what SR has to say about these assertions.)
    • Free choice of reference frames: You can describe the physics of a situation in pretty much any reference frame you like, but some frames demand the introduction of force fields that don't show up in other frames. You can call these "pseudo-force fields", or even "gravitational fields".
    • Uniform "gravitational" time dilation: Say you have two identically constructed clocks. One is deep down in a uniform "gravitational" potential well (or "pseudo-potential" well, if you prefer); the other is higher up. If the two clocks compare rates by sending light signals back and forth, then both will agree that the lower clock runs slower than the higher clock.
I've phrased these statements as carefully as I know how, short of resorting to formal mathematics. The short and sloppy versions say, "You can use accelerated frames of reference, so long as you throw in some pseudo-force fields"; and "Time runs slower as you descend into the potential well of a uniform pseudo-force field."

    HISTORY OF RICE
    GENERAL INFORMATION SOURCES

    A Brief History of Rice

    * From the publication Rice: Then and Now by R.E. Huke and E.H. Huke, International Rice Research Institute, 1990.
    Introduction
Rice is intimately involved in the culture as well as the food ways and economy of many societies. For example, folklore tells us that when the Kachins of northern Myanmar (Burma) were sent forth from the center of the Earth, they were given the seeds of rice and were directed to a wondrous country where everything was perfect and where rice grew well. Rice is an integral part of their creation myth and remains today as their leading crop and most preferred food. In Bali, it is believed that the Lord Vishnu caused the Earth to give birth to rice, and the God Indra taught the people how to raise it. In both tales, rice is considered a gift of the gods, and even today in both places, rice is treated with reverence, and its cultivation is tied to elaborate rituals.
Chinese myth, by contrast, tells of rice being a gift of animals rather than of gods. China had been visited by an especially severe period of floods. When the land had finally drained, people came down from the hills where they had taken refuge, only to discover that all the plants had been destroyed and there was little to eat. They survived through hunting, but it was very difficult, because animals were scarce. One day the people saw a dog coming across a field, and hanging on the dog's tail were bunches of long, yellow seeds. The people planted these seeds, rice grew, and hunger disappeared. Throughout China today, tradition holds that "the precious things are not pearls and jade but the five grains", of which rice is first.
