General Chronology
Chronology (Greek chronos time, logos , discourse), the science of time-measurement, has two branches:
  • Mathematical Chronology, which determines the units to be employed in measuring time, and
  • Historical Chronology, of which we here treat, and which fixes in the general course of time the position of any particular occurrence, or, as it is generally termed, its date.
It is thus for history what latitude and longitude are for geography. The first requisite in any system of historical chronology is an era, that is to say a fixed point of time, the distance from which shall indicate the position of all others. The term era , the derivation of which is not certainly known, appears first to have been employed in France and Spain to signify a number or rule. Since the need of a definite system of chronology was first recognized by mankind, many and various eras have been employed at different periods and by different nations. For practical purposes it is most important to understand those which affect Christian history CHRISTIAN ERA Foremost among these is that which is now adopted by all civilized peoples and known as the Christian, Vulgar, or Common Era, in the twentieth century of which we are now living. This was introduced about the year 527 by Dionysius Exiguus, a Scythian monk resident at Rome, who fixed its starting point in the year 753 from the foundation of Rome, in which year, according to his calculation, the birth of Christ occurred. Making this the year 1 of his era, he counted the years which followed in regular course from it, calling them years "of the Lord", and we now designate such a date A.D. (i.e.

Why didn't this come along any sooner? This proposal seems very revolutionary, a great direction for adult content.
This proposal should've come along when .com was invented. Obviously it will still be up to parents to educate the next generation. Actually I'm curious to know where .kids profits for charity will go?

General relativity in the global positioning system
Neil Ashby

The Global Position System (GPS) consists of 24 earth-orbiting satellites, each carrying accurate, stable atomic clocks. Four satellites are in each of six different orbital planes, of inclination 55 degrees with respect to earth's equator. Orbital periods are 12 hours (sidereal), so that the apparent position of a satellite against the background of stars repeats in 12 hours. Clock-driven transmitters send out synchronous time signals, tagged with the position and time of the transmission event, so that a receiver near the earth can determine its position and time by decoding navigation messages from four satellites to find the transmission event coordinates, and then solving four simultaneous one-way signal propagation equations. Conversely, gamma-ray detectors on the satellites could determine the space-time coordinates of a nuclear event by measuring signal arrival times and solving four one-way propagation delay equations. Apart possibly from high-energy accelerators, there are no other engineering systems in existence today in which both special and general relativity have so many applications. The system is based on the principle of the constancy of c in a local inertial frame: the Earth-Centered Inertial or ECI frame. Time dilation of moving clocks is significant for clocks in the satellites as well as clocks at rest on earth. The weak principle of equivalence finds expression in the presence of several sources of large gravitational frequency shifts. Also, because the earth and its satellites are in free fall, gravitational frequency shifts arising from the tidal potentials of the moon and sun are only a few parts in

In a mere 30 years, between 1952 and 1982, we repatriated the Governor Generalship and our Constitution. We adopted our flag, we formalized our understanding of Rights and we strengthened and expanded the bilingual nature of our country. General Features of
Pluto
Pluto is on a highly elliptical orbit at an average separation of almost 40 A. U. from the Sun, with an orbital period of 248 years. Since the planet was only discovered in 1930, we have observed only a portion of its orbit so far. Further, the orbit is tilted by about 17 degrees relative to the plane of the ecliptic, much more than for any other planet. Its equatorial radius of 1150 km is only 20% of that of the Earth, and its mass is only 0.0025 that of the Earth. Thus, it is by far the smallest planet, either in mass or diameter. Its period of rotation appears to be almost 6 1/2 days.
The 9th Planet or the 8th Planet?
Because of the eccentricity of Pluto's orbit, its orbit lies inside that of Neptune for the period from 1979 to 1999. Thus, strictly, Pluto isn't even the most distant planet at present, as illustrated in the following diagram. Of course, we term it the 9th planet because its average separation from the Sun (length of semimajor axis) is greater than that for Neptune.
What is Pluto?

Internships at Global Policy Forum
General Information
Internship Index Summer Internships Application Current and Recent Interns ... Countries of Origin Global Policy Forum welcomes applications for internships. We encourage qualified undergraduates to apply, as well as graduate students and those between degrees. We welcome students who have studied the United Nations and international organizations, but we consider specialized academic training less important than dedication, intelligence and enthusiasm for learning. GPF is looking for applicants who are students of Political Science/International Law, Political Economy or International Public Policy Studies. We especially encourage applications from those with broad international travel and work experience and those with a progressive, egalitarian and global outlook. A Supportive Environment GPF provides a very intern-supportive environment. Internships begin with a well-developed orientation process that includes training in web posting, internet research and GPF program priorities. All interns participate as members of a team and enjoy substantial autonomy in their special area of activity. The GPF office , located across the street from the UN, provides a pleasant environment, equipped with a high-speed computer network and comfortable facilities. It is an atmosphere low on stress and high on accomplishment and serious purpose. In the building, a community of many NGOs often cooperate and socialize together. Interns can network with these and other NGOs, as well as UN and mission staff.

Time for Kofi Annan to Go
Secretary-general ignored Rwandan genocide
By Nat Hentoff
Washington Times
April 30, 2001
For five years, Kofi Annan has been secretary-general of the United Nations, and he would like to continue when his term ends in December. The early odds are that he'll get his wish. After all, both the New York Times and The Washington Times have supported his retention in lead editorials. The New York Times celebrates "Mr. Annan's Winning Record." Adding to the hosannas, a New York Times news story was headlined "The Calmly Elegant Kofi Annan Seems Good Bet for Re-Election." And Richard Holbrooke, former American ambassador to the United Nations, says that Mr. Annan is "the best secretary-general since the organization was founded." The Washington Times editorial at least had some reservations about Mr. Annan's tenure so far. But there has been scant mention in the media of the plain fact that it was Mr. Annan, when he was head of the United Nation's peacekeeping office, who could have prevented the slaughter of 800,000 Tutus and their sympathizers in Rwanda in 1994. Maj. Gen. Romeo Dallaire, head of a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, urgently pleaded with Mr. Annan to intervene before the killings began, because Mr. Dallaire knew of the preparations for the genocide. Mr. Annan refused to act, or to say anything publicly.

What should I do to protect my Windows computer against viruses and other attacks?
Step 1. Set an Administrator Password
The first, and probably most important, precaution you can take is to set an Administrator password on your machine if you are running any of the most current Windows systems (e.g., XP, ME, 2000). If you don't, you're making your computer very vulnerable, for there are multiple worms and viruses that can exploit this single vulnerability. When the Administrator password has not been set, someone else can log in to your computer, use it, copy files to it, and even use your computer to launch attacks against other computers. Setting the Administrator password is like locking your door against these intruders. To set your Administrator password:

    Introduction
The display above shows, from three different physical perspectives, the orbit of a low-mass test particle , the small red circle, around a non-rotating black hole (represented by a grey circle in the panel at the right, where the radius of the circle is the black hole's gravitational radius , or event horizon . Kepler's laws of planetary motion, grounded in Newton's theory of gravity, state that the orbit of a test particle around a massive object is an ellipse with one focus at the centre of the massive object. But when gravitational fields are strong, as is the case for collapsed objects like neutron stars and black holes, Newton's theory is inaccurate; calculations must be done using Einstein's theory of General Relativity. In Newtonian gravitation, an orbit is always an ellipse. As the gravitating body becomes more massive and the test particle orbits it more closely, the speed of the particle in its orbit increases without bound, always balancing the gravitational force. For a black hole, Newton's theory predicts orbital velocities greater than the speed of light, but according to Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, no material object can achieve or exceed the speed of light. In strong gravitational fields, General Relativity predicts orbits drastically different from the ellipses of Kepler's laws. This page allows you to explore them.
    The Orbit Plot
The panel at the right of the applet shows the test mass orbiting the black hole, viewed perpendicular to the plane of its orbit. The path of the orbit is traced by the green line. After a large number of orbits the display will get cluttered and may start to flash; just click the mouse anywhere in the right panel to erase the path and start over. When the test mass reaches its greatest distance from the black hole, a yellow line is plotted from the centre of the black hole to that point, the

Life Upon the death of Philip, Alexander succeeded to the kingship and prepared for his subsequent conquests. Aristotle's work being finished, he returned to Athens, which he had not visited since the death of Plato. He found the Platonic school flourishing under Xenocrates, and Platonism the dominant philosophy of Athens. He thus set up his own school at a place called the Lyceum. When teaching at the Lyceum, Aristotle had a habit of walking about as he discoursed. It was in connection with this that his followers became known in later years as the peripatetics , meaning "to walk about." For the next thirteen years he devoted his energies to his teaching and composing his philosophical treatises. He is said to have given two kinds of lectures: the more detailed discussions in the morning for an inner circle of advanced students, and the popular discourses in the evening for the general body of lovers of knowledge. At the sudden death of Alexander in 323 BCE., the pro-Macedonian government in Athens was overthrown, and a general reaction occurred against anything Macedonian. A charge of impiety was trumped up against him. To escape prosecution he fled to Chalcis in Euboea so that (Aristotle says) "The Athenians might not have another opportunity of sinning against philosophy as they had already done in the person of Socrates." In the first year of his residence at Chalcis he complained of a stomach illness and died in 322 BCE.
