Congregations to help Re-elect Bush
In yet another signal that religion will cut a wide swath in the 2004 presidential campaign, it was reported recently that the Bush team will attempt to enlist the support of tens of thousands of local congregations in its efforts to re-elect the president. Is this a positive effort to bring religious conviction into American public life, or a dangerous threat to the wall of separation between church and state. You decide.

The History of General Software The Startup
In 1989, Steve Jones left Microsoft’s Portable Systems Group (now Windows NT) to form General Software. Later incorporated in 1990 as General Software, Inc., the company occupied Jones’ home and gradually grew into several rooms, even taking over the dining room and garage. Jones moved the company to its first downtown Bellevue offices in 1992. General Software grew through two more office relocations to accommodate its space needs, to its present facilities in Bellevue at 11000 NE 33rd Place, Suite 102, Bellevue, WA 98004. Prior to Microsoft, Jones developed and sold 28 commercial software products for the PC architecture, including four operating systems: Operating System Toolbox, PCUNIX, PCVMS, and Wendin-DOS. Product Development History
General Software’s first product Embedded DOS 6-XL introduced at Fall Comdex in 1990, offered real-time developers a special version of the most widely supported operating system in the world DOS. General Software's real-time version of DOS provided equivalencies to the essential kernel components of Microsoft's NT operating system, including lightweight threads, timers, mutexes, events, named objects, spinlocks, message ports, and queues. These essential real-time programming tools were made available to the user through standard C/C++ calling conventions, and also to the operating system file system to improve overall performance.

THE GENERAL MOTORS BUILDING
767 FIFTH AVENUE
(between 58th and 59th Streets)
Erected: 1968 (office building) GM Building, the white one with vertical patterning, is not small By Carter B. Horsley
The relocation of the F.A.O. Schwarz toy store in 1990 into this huge tower from across 58th Street at 747 Fifth Avenue was an exuberant salvation and partial redemption of the building, which was one of the most outrageously bad examples of planning in the city's history. The full-block, 50-story General Motors tower, shown at the right in the center, replaced the Savoy Plaza Hotel, the original home in the city to Trader Vic's and, more importantly, a distinguished skyscraper hotel with a very large mansard roof that was the perfect complement to the Plaza Hotel, directly across the avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman, diagonally across the avenue. Together with the distinctive towers of the Sherry Netherlands and the Pierre hotels just to the north, this high-rise ensemble was the most elegant in the world and the most definitive part of New York after its skyline. It could almost be argued that it would have been better to replace the Plaza with the GM building than the Savoy Plaza in terms of urbanistic planning. Of course, the Plaza's interiors far surpassed those of the Savoy Plaza and its fame was wider.

Commitment to a Free Version, while getting our pricing right
As I hope you already know, today we launched the Movable Type 3.0 Developer Edition, what you may not know is that with this release we are also making major improvements in our licensing and support policies. Over the past couple years, since our first release of Movable Type, we've tried to balance offering a product for free while being able to continue to innovate and develop. When our user base was in the hundreds and our users tended to be of the developer or designer breed and required less support, it was quite easy to release new versions at a fairly quick pace. As our user base grew and the tool became even more popular, it has become difficult to develop and offer support while relying on voluntarily donations.

Introduction
Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April. Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October. (Note that it is Daylight Saving (singular) Time, NOT Daylight Saving S Time. We are saving daylight, so it is singular and not plural.) Year DST Begins 2 a.m. DST Ends 2 a.m. April 2 October 29 April 7 October 27 April 6 October 26 April 5 October 25 April 4 October 31 April 2 October 29 April 1 October 28 April 7 October 27 April 6 October 26 April 4 October 31 Daylight Saving Time, for the U.S. and its territories, is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana, and by most of Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona). Other parts of the world observe Daylight Saving Time as well. While European nations have been taking advantage of the time change for decades, in 1996 the European Union (EU) standardized a EU-wide "summertime period." The EU version of Daylight Saving Time runs from the last Sunday in March through the last Sunday in October. During the summer, Russia's clocks are two hours ahead of standard time. During the winter, all 11 of the Russian time zones are an hour ahead of standard time. During the summer months, Russian clocks are advanced another hour ahead. With their high latitude, the two hours of Daylight Saving Time really helps to save daylight. In the southern hemisphere where summer comes in December, Daylight Saving Time is observed from October to March. Equatorial and tropical countries (lower latitudes) don't observe Daylight Saving Time since the daylight hours are similar during every season, so there's no advantage to moving clocks forward during the summer.

E-Mail This Article Published on Wednesday, April 28, 2004 by CommonDreams.org Its About Time by Virginia Hoffman Once again we have an ultimatum: the coalition “certainly will not tolerate” the situation in Falluja and Najaf. “Insurgents” (anyone who challenges the coalition’s right to be there) must give up their weapons . . . immediately. Time is running out. I remember similar pronouncements about time running out: either others must render what they ordinarily would not, or the US “must take decisive action” and attack/kill/level the target. Revisiting a past use of this threat may hold clues about what causes the urgency. Look at the series of ultimata the Bush administration delivered as they moved toward their pre-decided invasion of Iraq: they couldn’t allow more time for inspections, there was no time for discussion, Iraq would destroy us all if someone didn’t act now, the UN must act immediately or the US would be obliged to do so—to avoid Armageddon. How was that threat orchestrated? First, fear was the strongest sustained chord in the background. The movements flowed together—a pretended biblical series of who begat whom—Saddam’s ruthless past, Al Qaeda, the attacks of September 11, the oh-so-portable vial of white powder, and—big crescendo here—a chorus of Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfeld singing “Mushroom Cloud” loud enough to make listeners tremble. Time—doom, doom, doom—is running out.

Projectile Motion, General Solution Projectile Motion Curved Motion Physics Contents ... Home What follows is a general solution for the two dimensional motion of an object thrown in a gravitational field. This is usually termed a projectile motion problem. The thrown object is called the projectile. Its path is called the trajectory. We will answer all the usual questions that arise in a first year physics class regarding this motion. We will not consider air resistance. Without air resistance, the projectile will follow a parabolic trajectory. We will be throwing the projectile on level ground on planet Earth. It will leave the point of release, arc through the air along a path shaped like a parabola, and then hit ground a certain distance from where it was thrown. As mentioned above, this is a two dimensional problem. Therefore, we will consider x and y directed displacements, velocities, and accelerations. The projectile will accelerate under the influence of gravity, so its y acceleration will be downward, or negative, and will be equal in size to the acceleration due to gravity on Earth. There will be no acceleration in the x direction since the force of gravity does not act along this axis. On Earth the acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 m/s

Relativity Tutorial
Galilean Relativity
Relativity can be described using space-time diagrams . Contrary to popular opinion, Einstein did not invent relativity. Galileo preceded him. Aristotle had proposed that moving objects (on the Earth) had a natural tendency to slow down and stop. This is shown in the space-time diagram below.
Note the curved worldline above. This shows a variable velocity, or an acceleration . Galileo objected to Aristotle's hypothesis, and asked what happened to an object moving on a moving ship.
Now it is still moving in its final state. Galileo proposed that it is only relative velocities that matter. Thus a space-time diagram can be transformed by painting it on the side of a deck of cards, and then skewing the deck to one side but keeping the edges along a straight line:
Straight worldlines (unaccelerated particles) remain straight in this process. Thus Newton's First Law is preserved, and non-accelerated worldlines are special. This Galilean transformation does not affect the time. Thus two observers moving with respect to each other can still agree on the time, and thus the distance between two objects, which is the difference in their positions measured at equal times, can be defined. This allowed Newton to describe an inverse square law for gravity. But Galilean transformations do not preserve velocity. Thus the statement "The speed limit is 70 mph" does not make sense but don't try this in court. According to relativity, this must be re-expressed as "The magnitude of the relative velocity between your car and the pavement must be less than 70 mph". Relative velocities are OK.

The long history of growing plants in containers is documented in the writing and painting of various ancient civilizations, including the Egyptian, the Hindu, the Greek, and the Roman. But it appears that the ancient Chinese were the first to miniaturize trees for ornamental purposes, around A.D. 200. From China, the practice spread to Japan, probably during the Heian period (782-1185). During the peaceful and prosperous Tokugawa period of Japanese history (1603-1867), landscape gardening attained new importance. Many of the great Japanese gardens that exist today were established then, when the cultivation of native Japanese plants such as azaleas and maples was a pastime of the wealthy. Growing dwarf plants in containers was also popular, but by modern bonsai standards the container plants of the Tokugawa period were too large and their containers too deep. In this period, the term used for dwarf potted trees was hachi-no-ki , meaning "a tree in a pot." The term
