Fears for Italy hunger striker
Bonino: Will not commit suicide ROME, Italy Doctors in Italy are expressing alarm at the condition of politician Emma Bonino who has been on a hunger strike for five days. Bonino, 53, is the leader of a small political party and is protesting at what she says is unfair media coverage of forthcoming elections. She has been taken to Sao Paolo hospital in Milan late Tuesday, but has refused all medication and is not taking any food or liquid. Italian news agencies said that doctors at Sao Paolo were worried about Bonino's heart and might order "obligatory treatment." IN-DEPTH Italy Decides 2001 Berlusconi profile Election issues Political parties ... Italy accused of Europe isolation
Berlusconi embraced Bossi at the weekend conference ROME, Italy Italy's former foreign minister Renato Ruggiero has accused the government of moving to isolate the country from Europe. Pro-European Ruggiero resigned early in January following a spat with eurosceptic ministers about Italy's membership of the European Union. In his first interview since his resignation, Ruggiero told La Repubblica newspaper that his departure was prompted by clashes with Reforms Minister Umberto Bossi and other colleagues. Bossi denounced the EU as Stalinist and fascist at the weekend. Ruggiero said: "I think it's now clear to everyone the real reason for my resignation. If I hadn't done it then, I would have had to do it today because of Bossi's monstrosities. EXTRA INFORMATION The Changing Face of Europe "If Bossi's ideas aren't clearly rejected then there's an enormous risk that our traditional pro-European credibility will carry less weight at such an important moment," he said.

M T. M ARMOLADA, D OLOMITES
Mt. Marmolada is a mountain in the Dolomites in Italian Alps. We stayed in a hotel and Arraba, a small village to the north of Mt. Marmolada. We used Arraba as a base for various day tours. This report describes the longest and most interesting one. The length was only about 130 km (could be wrong - someone told me it's only 65 km), with two passes at 2056 and 2239 meters, respectively. The map above shows the roads we took; we rode the loop clockwise. We used Mountainbikes, but the same tour can easily be ridden with road bikes. Many interesting others in the same area require mountainbikes, though. Mt. Marmolada is in the central Alps. Before I first went there I had this mental image of snow-capped peaks and vertical cliffs that could not possibly allow any reasonable bicycle riding. I found this is wrong, it's in fact fairly easy - if exhausting - to ride in the Alps because all the roads and trails avoid the really steep mountains and remain in the valleys and lower and less steep mountains. Riding in the Alps means rarely riding on either level or really steep roads, 4 or 5% is typical but it can reach 10% or more in places. Roads usually wind their way up or down in serpentines. I live in Berlin, which has only very minor hills, and I am a poor climber, but I found that I can manage a pass or two a day in the Alps without too many problems. The reward of the trouble is awesome scenery.

Italy hunts suspected terrorists
Investigators fear Italy could be used as recruiting ground for attacks, such as this one north of Baghdad Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT The hunt for al Qaeda Bin Laden's audio message, 2/03 Terror warning system Terror on tape ... War against terror ROME, Italy (CNN) Milan prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for five North Africans suspected of recruiting people to carry out suicide attacks in Iraq and elsewhere. Hours later on Friday, police in Hamburg, Germany, said they had arrested an Algerian on one of the Italian warrants. The moves come the day after the arrest of a 24-year-old man in Gloucester, western England, and the discovery of small amounts of explosives. He is being questioned about suspected international terrorism links. ( Full Story CNN's Rome Bureau Chief Alessio Vinci said the arrests were "significant" because it had been thought that Italy had been used only for logistical purposes, such as a base for providing false documents or shelter. But the authorities are now investigating the possibility that Italy is being used to recruit and train terrorists for Iraq and elsewhere.

Martino told the Italian Senate the dead included 11 Italian Carabinieri military police and three army soldiers. Martino also mentioned a civilian but didn't elaborate. Italy battles to accept euro
ROME, Italy Strains have emerged in Italy over the birth of the euro, with long queues outside banks, stations and post offices, and citizens complaining about a shortage of coins. In Brussels, the European Commission said only three percent of Italy's cash transactions on January 2 were in euros the lowest in the eurozone with France and the Netherlands at the top with 50 percent and the average at 20 percent. While one commission spokesman pointed out it was not a race, another said it was not surprising that Italy was so far behind, since fewer cash dispensers were converted ahead of the changeover and many businesses chose not to receive euros in advance. Strains also emerged in the Italian government on Thursday, as Foreign Minister Renato Ruggiero attacked cabinet colleagues for belittling the ambitious project. VIDEO CNN's Richard Quest reports people in Frankfurt, Germany, are slowly but surely adapting to using the new Euro currency (January 1)
