Italy PM appointment due
Berlusconi won the May 13 election ROME, Italy Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is expected to appoint Silvio Berlusconi as prime minister within days. Ciampi began talks with politicians on Thursday ahead of making the expected appointment on either Friday or Saturday, Italian media reported. Berlusconi won the May 13 general election with his centre-right coalition, but has taken nearly a month to form his government. The president's non-partisan role is largely ceremonial but he appoints a prime minister who is capable of commanding a majority in the parliament. Ciampi, the head of state, began consultations with the newly elected speakers of both houses of parliament and then saw leaders of the defeated centre-left bloc led by Francesco Rutelli at the presidential palace on Thursday, Reuters news agency reported. Italy pledges troops to U.S.
ROME, Italy Italy is to provide a 2,700-strong force for the U.S.-led campaign in Afghanistan, including naval, air and ground units, parliament has been told. Defence minister Antonio Martino said the majority of Italy's military contribution would be involved in logistical and defensive operations, but added that a limited number of the contingent might be involved in combat operations. He said on Wednesday that the Italians would be placed under the direct command of the U.S. military. Total immersion in Italian life and language

An unforgettable study - holiday in Alicudi, in the Aeolian Islands, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, proclaimed by UNESCO World Heritage as an area of special interest. Alicudi is a tiny island only two and a half kilometres wide. A small (steep!) uncontaminated paradise off the north coast of Sicily. Spring and autumn offer a host of wild flowers and migrating birds. Summer brings the heat of the Southern Mediterranean and sparkling seas. All year round there is a culture touched by Greeks, Normans, Romans, Africans, and, of course, Sicilians. The islands were a major grain producer and an important strategic passing point for the peoples of the past.
Alicudi is unique. A fascinating volcanic rock in the middle of the sea, inhabited by about a hundred people. They are the last of a population of 800 souls pushed by poverty to emigrate in the mid-twentieth century mainly to Melbourne, Australia, to abandon their old world houses that today, solitary and run-down, remind one of an ancient agricultural culture and have become an attraction for the adventurous tourist in search of something unspoilt.

Bettini holds on for win in Italy
Story Tools SAN BENEDETTO, Italy Italy's reigning World Cup champion Paolo Bettini took the Tirreno-Adriatico race title after the 162km seventh and final stage at San Benedetto. The 30-year-old Quick Step rider, also the Italian champion, managed to hold on to his slim overnight lead to make himself favorite for Saturday's Milan-San Remo race. Spain's Oscar Freire clawed back two seconds to lose by five but his chances had evaporated after making contact with another rider during the mass sprint. German Erik Zabel was third. GItalian sprinter Alessandro Petacchi took the final stage his third of the week following wins in the first two stages in four hours 43 minutes and 29 sseconds. Petacchi, who just beat Zabel to the line, said: "The sprints are never easy. There was a lot of confusion and at the finish I was anxious I might be overtaken. But in the end I did enough." Bettini ended the final stage in 13th while his overall winning time was 33 hours 47 minutes and six seconds.

Totti and Miccoli return for Italy
Totti aims for finals Story Tools MILAN, Italy (Reuters) AS Roma's Francesco Totti and Juventus striker Fabrizio Miccoli return to the Italy squad for Saturday's Euro 2004 Group Nine climax against Azerbaijan. The pair missed September's qualifiers against Wales and Serbia/Montenegro because of fitness problems, but return in Reggio where Italy must win to ensure automatic qualification for next year's finals in Portugal. Totti's return is particularly relevant given the absence through injury of Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero. Coach Giovanni Trapattoni is likely to play the Roma forward behind a front pairing of Christian Vieri and Filippo Inzaghi. Miccoli, who has now fully recovered from an appendix operation, is likely to start on the bench although Trapattoni has often chosen to insert the diminutive forward in the latter stages of a game. Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi is ruled out through injury but the coach has plenty of cover in that area with Cristiano Zanetti, Gennaro Gattuso and Simone Perrotta battling for the two central midfield slots.

Italy's interior minister resigns
Scajola's resignation had already been rejected once ROME, Italy Italian Interior Minister Claudio Scajola has resigned after outraging parliament by calling a government aide murdered by guerrillas "a pain in the ass." He resigned before Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi faced parliament on the issue later on Wednesday. In a letter of resignation, Scajola called his decision to quit a "necessary act of duty" and said it was the best way to pay the price for having "once again opened the wound" of the family of the murdered aide. Marco Biagi, a labour ministry adviser, was shot dead in March by Red Brigades leftist guerrillas. The Brigades, who terrorised Italy in the 1970s and 1980s, said they killed him for his work on laws that would make it easier to fire people. Scajola, a member of Berlusconi's Forza Italia party, first offered his resignation on Sunday night but Berlusconi rejected it. The premier came under intense pressure for that decision.
