From the relatively narrow coastal plains the land rises sharply to the peaks of the Appennines which form a natural boundary with Umbria and Tuscany to the west. While the coastal areas are heavily populated the beautiful inland countryside is sparsely inhabited. The total population of the region is around 1.5 million with an average density of less than 150 inhabitants per square kilometre. The region covers just under 10,000 square kilometres. The inland mountainous zones are mostly limestone and are noted for bare peaks, rushing torrents, dramatic gorges and many complexes of caves. In contrast, the areas nearer the coastal plain are celebrated for their fertile rounded hills topped by ancient fortified towns. The highest point in the Marche is Monte Vettore in the Sibillini mountains at 2,476 metres. The coast itself boasts long sandy strands; apart from the limestone Conero peninsula, it is virtually all flat.

This section describes the changes that have taken place in Italy. This information can help you find records in the Family History Library Catalog for the place your ancestors lived. This section will describe the jurisdictions used in the Family History Library Catalog. Italy has been divided into various city states, duchies, and kingdoms under several different rulers throughout history. Parts of modern Italy used to be part of Austria, Switzerland, France, and the former Yugoslavia. The country that controlled Italy determined what records were to be kept. During the reign of Napoleon (from about 1808 to 1815), Italy was divided into provinces, communes, and hamlets. These political boundaries are basically the same today. Most of Italy was unified into a single kingdom in 1861. Venetia became part of the kingdom in 1866 and the city of Roma in 1870. Roma became the capital in 1871.

Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada's land mass is 9 093 507 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones. In addition to its coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada has a third sea coast on the Arctic Ocean, giving it the longest coastline of any country. To the south, Canada shares an 8 891 kilometre boundary with the United States. To the north, the Arctic islands come within 800 kilometres of the North Pole. Canada's neighbour across the Arctic Ocean is Russia. Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans ... more
    Mountain Ranges
Canada's terrain incorporates a number of mountain ranges: the Torngats, Appalachians and Laurentians in the east; the Rocky, Coastal and Mackenzie ranges in the west; and Mount St. Elias and the Pelly Mountains in the north. At 5 959 metres, Mount Logan in the Yukon is Canada's tallest peak.

Introduction to Calabria When we started Delicious Italy in April 2000, Calabria was the region we knew least about. Off the top of our heads Italy's boot was famous for bergamots , brigands, being next to Sicily and that's about it. The Regione Calabria does, however, produce some of the most sumptuous brochures in the country. There's not much text but the combination of blue sea and a green interior makes you dream for the summer during the long cold winter months. If you are thinking of renting a car, this is a

The flag of Italy is a green, white, and red vertical tricolor . The ratio of its height to its width is 2:3. This flag was officially adopted on June 18, 1946, when Italy became a republic and the monarchy ended after World War 2. The previous Italian flag was like the modern one with the coat of arms of the House of Savoy in the center.
