ADVERTISING INFORMATION Parma - Culture Archaelogical Museum The Ducal Museum of Antiques was founded in Parma in 1760 by Don Filippo Borbone in order to collect the remains which were brought to light during the excavations at Velleja (a small Roman town on the Apennines in the province of Piacenza). When the Duchy passed under the French rule, it was deprived of all its valuables, which were given back only after the Congress of Vienna. Under Marie Louise's government the Museum occupied its actual seat and was supplied with further purchases. After the Italian unification it became an important institute for paleontological studies and researches. The collections are now displayed on two floors; on the first floor there are the Velleja and other collections, while on the ground floor it is possible to visit the prehistoric age sections and the one relating to Parma and to territories around Parma during the Roman era. Cathedral Dedicated to S. Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption), the Cathedral of Parma represents one of the finest examples of the Romanesque style in the Po Valley. Time and men have considerably altered its structure and decoration, leaving several "traces of art". Situated outside the original town walls and started on the will of the antipope Cadalus towards the end of 1059, it was consecrated during the papacy of Pasquale II in 1106. In 1117 a violent earthquake shook the whole Po Valley and part of the building suffered serious damages. Consequent reconstructions and modifications were undertaken almost immediately.

What Italians are saying with their cuisine is that they are passionate artists. For example, Margherita pizza, which was born in Italy, was created to symbolize the Italian flag (red sauce, white cheese, green basil) as a tribute to Queen Margherita. An Italian's entire day revolves around food - and mealtime still means something there. That is why Italians, although gaining on Americans in the weight wars, still tend to be healthier. Here are four mealtime tips you can glean from the Italian diet. Strawberries What could be more satisfying than having a delicious mouth watering strawberry? Well, I am sure if you think hard enough you might come up with something, but for the time being let's just enjoy this intriguing yet scrumptious fruit.

The country has been host to important human activities in prehistoric times, and therefore archaeological sites of note can be found in many regions: Latium and Tuscany Umbria and Basilicata . Once the central location of the known civilized world, Sicily was always the greatest treasure that European, African and Persian empires wanted for their very own. Nearly 3000 years of history are on this island (roughly the size of New Jersey). There are stone ruins, temples of ancient people, monastaries, outdoor theatres, ampitheatres and endless vineyards and olive groves.

Department of French, Classics and Italian Arranged through the Office of Study Abroad (OSA) What's this program about? The Italian studies program in Florence brings together the study of language, and the culture and civilization of late Medieval and Renaissance Italy. Florence, the capital of Tuscany and the cradle of the Renaissance, is situated on the banks of the Arno River in central Italy. It witnessed a flowering of cultural activity from the 13 th through the 16 th centuries that signaled the beginning of the modern age and transformed the western world's ideas of literature, the arts and sciences, philosophy, education, and business. The program takes full advantage of the unique resources of this beautiful city's rich heritage. Tours of Florence's renowned galleries, museums and churches form an integral part of the students' experience. Sites include the Academy of Fine Arts, home of Michelangelo's David, the magnificent cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its celebrated cupola, and the basilicas of Santa Croce and San Lorenzo. In modern Florence, an international center of contemporary visual and performing arts, Italy's renowned artistic traditions continue with exhibits, concerts, ballet, theater, opera, and film festivals.

Ministry ... Italy in the World > Italy and Culture, Italy is Culture The promotion abroad of scientific and humanistic practice, as well as of the Italian language, is to be considered fundamental to Italy's political and economic rapport with foreign countries and to maintaining ties with large Italian communities abroad.
In addition to enhancing Italy's contribution to European and world culture, it is necessary to ensure that the creative excellence of the past, gradually built up over the centuries, is recognised as the life-blood of today's excellence in those sectors that modern production has necessarily ranked as leaders of ever-expanding markets.
A particularly complex effort, that of constantly maintaining and enhancing the dialogue with other cultures - those both nearer and farther from our own - on such a wide and complex range of matters: a cultural dialogue that at times is the almost exclusive form of contact in situations where dialogue in other sectors is scarce. Such tasks fall in Italy to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which carries them out by means of close and active collaboration with the competent Ministries, first among which the Ministry of Cultural Assets and Activities and that of Universities, Education and Research.
