Italy History and Culture
History While Italy's status as a single political entity is relatively recent (1861), its strategic Mediterranean position made it a target for colonisers and opportunists fairly early on in human history. The Etruscans were the first people to rule the peninsula, arriving anywhere between the 12th and 8th centuries BC. They were eventually subsumed within the mighty Roman empire, leaving little cultural evidence, other than the odd tomb. The Ancient Greeks, their contemporaries, set up a few colonies along the southern coast, which became known as Magna Graecia and developed into independent city states. Thus the greater glory which was Rome was itself the offspring of Etruscan and Greek cultures.

Italian culture and life style
Italian culture and traditions Northern Italian life style Italy - art and culture Northern Italy his its own unique culture and life style, with strong influences from northern Europe as well as southern Italy. Music and art have always played an important role in Italian culture, and Vicenza has a rich tradition with plenty of museums and galleries to explore as well as bars and pubs which offer live music for all tastes.
A guided tour of Vicenza will be as enlightening as it is enjoyable. Music in Italy varies greatly, from traditional Italian folk songs typical of southern Italy (Napoli) often heard on street corners to open air chamber music in the squares during summer. Vicenza hosts an annual jazz festival - Vicenza Jazz - and highlights both local artists as well as world famous musicians. A quiet evening in the square or relaxing in a cafe with some locally made wine and live music is an excellent way to cap a day tour of Teatro Olimpico and the Basilica.

Introduction
At the turn of the 20th century, a growing tide of Italians, largely from the south, immigrated to the United States where work was plentiful and land was cheap.
They left Italy in search of opportunities their homeland denied them. In southern Italy, for example, noble families owned half of all the farmland. As a result, millions of peasants were sharecroppers, lucky to find work six months out of the year because the landowners were careless about farming and productivity suffered accordingly.
When they did work, the peasants had to give as much as half their crops to the landowners. At the same time, these peasants were taxed by the government of a newly united Italy, had their sons drafted into the Italian military and watched their children die from poor nutrition and inferior medical care.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Genoa - (Genova) - Culture Genoa (Italian Genova; ancient Genua ), city, north
The old quarter of the city covers a narrow strip of coastal plain east and north of the old port, which was enlarged in modern times by the addition of an outer harbour protected by breakwaters. Industrial and residential sections were developed east and west along the shore and on the hills back of the old port. In the heart of the old quarter is the Romanesque-Gothic Church of San Donato, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, and, on the harbour front, is the Palazzo San Giorgio, which was built in the 14th century by order of the first Genoese doge, Simone Boccanegra, and which later became the seat of the powerful Bank of Saint George.
Work on the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Genoa was begun, according to some accounts, with the first rich booty from the Crusades. The cathedral, consecrated in 1118, contains a wealth of art treasures. The massive 16th-century Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), former residence of the doges, now houses the law courts. On the Piazza San Matteo are the houses of the Doria family and the Church of San Matteo, founded by the family in 1125 and containing the tomb of the Genoese admiral and statesman Andrea Doria. Toward the northwest, near the Stazione Marittima, at which ocean liners dock, stands the 13th-century Church of the Annunziata, noteworthy for its interior containing many fine works of art. The birthplace of Christopher Columbus is also among the historic places of Genoa. The city is the seat of the University of Genoa (1471).
