For over 60 years, The British-Italian Society has worked to increase UK understanding of Italy, its history, language and culture, and to encourage friendship between the two countries and peoples. It does this mainly through social events, lectures, publications, exhibitions, concerts and academic awards.
When the Society - then the "Friends of Free Italy" - first met in 1941, Italy and Britain were at war. Now, as partners in Europe, the people of both countries have formed close friendships based on commercial, holiday, cultural and educational links, and The British Italian Society plays an important part in this process.

For a taste of Italian culture and architecture, visit Rome. To sample much of Italy's finest cuisine and wines, visit the Tuscany region. And to become acquainted with modern Italian culture, fashion, and industry, travel to Milan. Cosmopolitan, savvy, and smart, Milan, while neither Italy's capital nor its largest city, is indisputably the country's financial and cultural center. Milan is home to Italy's main stock exchange, as well as a high-fashion industry that leads the world (although some Parisians and New Yorkers may care to argue this point with you). For visitors, there is the world-renowned shopping, an array of diverse nightclubs, a varied sampling of cuisine from around the world as well as Milan's own local flavors, the beautiful Romanesque and Gothic churches, and some of the country's finest galleries and museums. In Milan, you will never be short of something wonderful to do. In Style To truly immerse yourself in the flavor of Milan's sophisticated daily life, the first thing you'll want to do is find a cozy café with outdoor seating, order a cappuccino, and sit. Milan's locals seem to understand the importance of their position on the world stage as a center for high fashion, and they do their best to uphold this honor by always looking fabulous. It seems to be an inherent trait with these Italians, an inherited birthright that no matter the time of day or the activity, they always exhibit casual elegance.

The Italian culture is much more than Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The Italian culture is all around us!
http://www.tricolore.net/culture.htm
The Italian Culture is much more than Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, the Colosseum and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It engulfs every little thing of the every day life of the average Italian. Italian Culture is the big family dinners, the opera singing at the dinner table, the "Mafia" accent, but it's also the great Italian history starting with the Greeks and the Etruscans and the way they influenced the later Roman Empire, the great Caesar, the equally important Constantine the Great, Garibaldi and many more. What makes Italian Culture important is the way it transformed the world the way we know it today. Looking around us we can see all the "important" or "unimportant" things that the Italian Culture brought in our lives, from pizza and pasta to Frank Sinantra and Madonna, from Niccolo Machiavelli and Volta to the italian fashion of Versace and Armani, from Ferrari and Lamborghini to Sofia Loren and Roberto Benigni. The Italian Culture is all around us!

Cultural codes and hierarchies in the mid- cinquecento villotta
The villotta is a genre of dialect song with origins in northern Italy. In the mid- cinquecento , the two main Venetian printers, Girolamo Scotto and Antonio Gardano, published seventeen volumes of villotte . These volumes include two series of villotte , one alla napolitana and one alla padoana , in addition to single volumes of villotte by individual composers and the odd villotta published in a collection of canzone villanesche . In my study of the mid- cinquecento villotta , I aim to elucidate any textual and musical structures common to the volumes, to shed light on some lesser known musical actors, and to place the genre in its cultural context. These pages are a snapshot of this work-in-progress, and everything is in draft form. From here you can read brief notes on the main themes encompassed by my work, or my most recent conference paper abstracts . I welcome any feedback concerning the site. Thanks for visiting!
