Manfredi, 83, died Friday following a stroke. A chorus of Romans shouted "Nino, Nino!" following funeral services in the Artists' church of San Maria del Popolo this morning. He is survived by wife Erminia Ferrari and three children. Manfredi was best known for films like "Bread and Chocolate" ( Pane e Cioccolata ), where he played a hapless Italian emigrant in Switzerland and Ettore Scola's tragicomic "Down and Dirty" ( Brutti, sporchi e cattivi ) as a paterfamilias struggling to get by in a shack on the outskirts of Rome. Culture and Education
Estonian culture has been well represented in Italy mainly in the field of music and fine arts – culture-loving Italians know composers Arvo P¤rt and Erkki-Sven T¼¼r, conductor Tµnu Kaljuste, as well as painter Jaan Toomik. The concerts of Estonian grand masters are always sold out and reviews of exhibitions are positive. Especially well known and popular among the Italians is Arvo P¤rt.
Estonian artists have participated in a number of Venice biennials. In 2003 Estonia will be represented by the curator project John Smith: Marko Und Kaido of Andres H¤rm presenting the paintings and installations of Marko M¤etamm and Kaido Ole. In addition head curator of the Venetian biennial Fr. Bonami included Jaan Toomik in his curator project. Toomik's video "Mart and Peeter" will be shown.
In Italy also the Estonian designers and stylists, who have been presented in Milan, Rome, as well as Florence are about to find recognition. The Estonian restorers have a possibility to study at different Italian restoration schools.
In 2002 at Adamson-Eric Museum the group exhibition of the Finnish and Italian artists "Be’ ... No ... Ei-No!". Marja-Leena Valkola, Pirjo Saanio, Tuomo Klemi from Finland and Pippo Altomare, Nicola Spezzano and Salvatore Dominelli from Italy were presented. All those artists have since 1992 been actively presented with their joint exhibition projects in Italy, as well as Finland.

      Italy, culture, citizenship
We saw more or less interesting aspects of our citizenship. We stopped on our belonging to an area, a region. Generally the relationship works really, in the sense that there is correspondence between own personal characteristics and the ones attributed to the "campanile", to the region or the area where we spend our day for work or for life condition. Can we say the same for an italian identity? Maybe yes, maybe partially. If it's true that we feel belonging to our little village or to our region, not always such identification works at 100% with our homeland , the one of the flag, or of the hymn, etc. Sometimes it happens not to "feel oneselves italian". Reasons can be different: historical, political, cultural, etc. We happen to ask ourselves these questions just in this last decade, in which the concept of belonging to Europe is going to impose itself : in a certain sense it's true that enlarging the horizon to Europe forces us to verify our italian being, to measure our point of views, our characteristics, that make feel ourselves similar and at the same time different from the other European "fellow-citizens" And our Italian identity ?

Ananova: Italy promises loan of Parthenon sculpture Italian culture minister Giuliano Urbani has promised to return a fragment of the 5th century BC Parthenon to Greece on a long-term loan. The gesture is likely to strengthen Greek calls for the return of the Elgin Marbles from the British Museum in London to be displayed in Athens during the 2004 Olympics. The fragment is part of the statue of Peitho, goddess of persuasion and seduction, and is about 14in high and 13.6in wide. It is housed in Sicily, at the Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum in Palermo. "In a very short time, a piece of the Parthenon that is in our museum in Sicily will be loaned to Greece on a long-term basis," Mr Urbani said, after meeting Greek culture minister Evangelos Venizelos. In return, Greece will loan an unspecified work of art to Italy, Greek and Italian officials said. Greece has campaigned for years for the return of the Elgin Marbles - 17 figures and part of a frieze from the Parthenon, removed 200 years ago by Lord Elgin, Britain's ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. In a letter made public at the weekend, directors of several major museums around the world warned of the "essentially destructive nature of the repatriation of objects".
