Archaeology Abroad 2004 - Arezzo, Italy
Archaeology Program in Arezzo, Italy
The University of Puget Sound will participate in an archaeology program in Arezzo, sponsored by the University of Rochester and the Commune d'Arezzo. This summer, we will participate in an archaeological program that will demonstrate Arezzo's importance in the material culture of the ancient Mediterranean. Arezzo is well known in the world of Roman archaeology as one of the most important centers of pottery production in the first centuries BCE and CE. The Red Glazed Ware, which is prominently displayed in Arezzo's archaeological museum, was used throughout the Mediterranean and has a close connection with the Yodefat, the early Roman site the Rochester group excavated in Israel. Nevertheless, modern knowledge about the nature of the production of Red Glazed Ware in Italy is still primitive. We intend to continue to excavate a production center in Arezzo (a pottery workshop or a kiln, or both) to contribute a fresh, contemporary understanding of the production and shipping of pottery in the Mediterranean area. We will work with Italian and Israeli archaeologists and with American and Italian students. In November, 2001, Dean William Scott Green (University of Rochester) and Luigi Lucherini (Mayor of Arezzo) signed an agreement of collaboration to carry out a new archaeological dig in the outskirts of Arezzo where it is believed that a Roman pottery production center was located.

Research aims and current results
The Gubbio valley is the last agricultural valley of any importance in north east Umbria (Italy), before crossing the Apennines. Before the project, work had focused on linguistic study of the Iguvine Tables (bronze tablets) (discovered in the fifteenth century in no certain context) and excavation in the Roman city. The successfully accomplished aims of the project were to understand the origins of these historical developments and provide an understanding of the territory. Interpretation of the Iguvine Tables had suggested precocious state formation in this relatively remote and upland valley. Our archaeological work suggests that the tablets were a late reworking of historical reality.

Classical Archaeology in the Department of the Classics The Department of the Classics offers numerous opportunities to explore archaeology in the classical Mediterranean world. Students are encouraged to begin their study on campus with such courses as CLAS 234: The Archaeology of Greece or CLAS 235: The Archaeology of Italy. They may also pursue their study of ancient sites and artifacts at first-hand by participating in off-campus programs in Italy that vary in length and intellectual focus. Colgate students stand under the shadow
of Vesuvius at the Forum of Pompeii For example, an extended study course, CLAS 250: The Material Culture of Rome and Pompeii, enables students to visit for three weeks in May the ancient monuments of Rome and the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum that were destroyed in 79AD by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius. (Successful completion of Latin 123: Elementary Latin or a higher level Latin language course is a prerequisite for CLAS 250.)
On Colgate's semester-long study group in Venice, Italy students also visit numerous archaeological sites and museum collections throughout the Italian peninsula as part of their study of the archaeology of Italy (CLAS 235Y). Fieldtrips scheduled during the course of the semester may take students, for instance, to prehistoric sites in the Italian Alps, Greek sites in Sicily, and southern Italy, and of course the Roman sites of Rome, Aquileia, and Pompeii. The etruscan civilization spread itself from VIII century and the half of first century b.c., on Tuscany, Umbria and high Lazio. Also in Emilia Romagna and Padania we find important remains of this presency in Italy.Etruscan art is the result of the single state town production, with magalomaniac walls remains. Necropolis are the witness of the big importance given by the Etruscan to people dead.In many tombs have been found jewels, sculptures, earthenware and bronze objects, sarcofaguses and marvellous parietal pictures. Etruscan architecture spread itself in civil and religious production. Etruscan worked with perishable goods(wood, earthenware) that's why we lost thw majority of these documents. .

Archaeological Groups of Italy
PROFILE of Archaeologic Groups of Italy Archaeological Groups of Italy (G.A. of Italy) is an association of volunteers committed in conservation exploitation and improvement of the archaeological, historical and generally speaking cultural legacy of our country, in collaboration with the institutes in charge of these duties, such as the local Archaeological Offices and the Museums
Anyway members engaged in all different activities managed and organized by the G.A. of Italy don't want to take the place of the competent authorities:
we believe that only the collaboration between institutes and all the people interested in our cultural heritage improvement may avoid the inevitable gaps which a bureaucratic and academic approach could cause in our country resources management. No need of any special requisite to take part in association's activities: they are directed to everybody, because we think that nether special cultural knowledge nor other exceptional quality is necessary to be involved in Archaeology and Arts, but we think that passion and wish to dedicate part of our own free-time to the association aims are sufficient. The Archaeological Groups of Italy, established in 1965 by

An outline of art and culture that testifies the extraordinary richness of history and beauty that has made Italy the ultimate attraction for travelers, artists and students of all times and from all countries. Prehistoric civilization There has been human settlement in Italy since Paleolithic times, as is demonstrated by numerous discoveries: Balzi Rossi in Ventimiglia, the caves at Toirano, Grotta Guattari at Circeo. Prehistoric art is fairly widespread although it varies considerably in importance, type and age. Among the most ancient objects is the so called Venus of Savignano, dating back to the late Paleolithic period, which was found near Modena and is now held in Rome at the Museo Pigorini. In the provinces of Lecce (Romanelli), Matera (Serra d'Alto), Reggio di Calabria (Roccaforte del Greco), Palermo (Grotta dell'Addaura) and on the Egadi Islands there are many grottoes which contain pictures and graffiti depicting animals, dating back to a period between 14,000 and 9,000 BC. Dolmen and menhir, which are quite common in southern Italy, date back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Among the most important discoveries from the same period are the rock engravings in Val Camonica and the stele-statues in the Lunigiana region. Finally the megalithic monuments of the Nuragic civilization in Sardinia are unique examples of their kind.
