Our project centers on Insula 1 of Regio VI, which is located just inside of the Herculaneum gateway and contains the House of the Surgeon, generally considered to be one of the oldest houses in the city.

My mother passed on her interest in archaeology and ancient history to me as a child. Her primary interests lay in Ancient Egypt and the Near East. I still retain a deep interest in the history of these cultures as well as many others. I am particularly interested in the effects of catastrophes on peoples throughout history.

    The Valley of the Kings
The American University in Cairo hosts the Theban Mapping Project. The Atlas of the Valley of the Kings is an exemplary interpretation of a very complex site. From an overview map you can select from dozens of tombs, then explore the passages and chambers. Text, photographs, 3-d models and video segments describe each tomb — its history and archaeology.

    Archaeology Program in Arezzo, Italy
The University of Rochester has developed a program of archaeological research in Arezzo that complements and expands our program in Galilee, Israel. The University has conducted since 1991 a series of extremely successful excavations in Israel. Our largest excavation, on the early Roman site of Yodefat, was the subject of a highly successful U.S. television documentary, "Echoes from the Ancients," which continues to be broadcast on national American television PBS.

The Tiber Valley Project The Pompeii Project Archaeology has always been a major part of the BSR's activities throughout Italy. Projects like the South Etruria Survey (a ground-breaking study in the development of landscape archaeology) were undertaken within the auspices of the BSR's archaeology programme. Current work of the BSR continues to be at the forefront of archaeological research in Italy. Aside from the major projects, the aims of the BSR's archaeology research programme are:
    • To maintain a significant programme of archaeological activity in Italy To promote contact and exchange between British, Commonwealth, and Italian archaeologists and the international archaeological community based in Italy To provide opportunities for younger scholars to gain experience in archaeology in Italy To provide a centre of research by British and Commonwealth scholars into the archaeology of Italy and the Mediterranean
