Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by CARL SPADONI
Healey earned his doctorate in 1976 with a dissertation entitled `Family and Social Change in a South Italian Town.' His love of Italian literature stems from that formative period in his career. His bibliography, which contains 2500 listings of some 1400 works, is an exemplary reference tool. Firmly grounded in biography and publishing history, it is a work of erudition and clarity, which complements and surpasses its predecessor, Nancy C. Shields's landmark study, Italian Translations in America (1931). Whereas Shields's scholarly bibliography is relegated to English translations in American editions from the beginnings of Italian literature up to 1928, Healey's bibliography documents practically the rest of the twentieth century, encompassing all countries in which English translations have appeared in monograph and serial form.
The bibliography begins with a comprehensive introduction that gives an overview of the patterns in English translation, the economic aspects of publishing, the translators themselves, previous bibliographies in the field, the structure of the bibliographical entries, the bibliographical principles at work, and access points. Separate preliminary sections list the sources consulted and abbreviations employed. The bibliography is organized chronologically by year and then within each year entries appear alphabetically under each author's name. There is also an appendix of translations found by Healey at the penultimate stage of his work, primarily translations recorded in the OCLC WorldCat database.

Italian Literature Boccaccio's Depiction of The Plague vs. Today's Treatment of AIDS Victims
A 4 page comparison between the social problem described in the opening of Boccaccio's "Decameron" and the present-day AIDS dilemma. The writer describes how individuals affected with the Black Plague were treated very much like contemporary AIDS victims in terms of their alienation from society. AIDS is also regarded as being a somewhat different epidemic as it mostly affects only certain high-risk groups whereas the Plague could strike anyone, anywhere, at any time and no one knew why. No Bibliography. Plagauds.wps Boccaccio’s "Decameron ": A 3 page essay that examines how the ribald tales of Giovanni Boccaccio in his fourteenth century book, The Decameron , reflected the changing social structure brought about by the Black Death and also foreshadowed the intellectual freedom which would develop as part of the Renaissance. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

This monograph is distinguished by a consistently philological approach to linguistic and cultural phenomena. This approach emphasizes the apprehension of artistic intention by means of historically accurate interpretation based on linguistic analyses. In examining the genesis of a literary work, an endeavour difficult to formalize, the author strives for the greatest possible methodological rigour and the highest degree of precision in his conclusions.

Literatures Due to its linguistic diversity, Switzerland has four distinct literatures: German-speaking Switzerland Three main literary developments in the Early and High Middle Ages are noteworthy: the translations done by monks such as Notker at the Abbey of St. Gallen (approx. 950-1022), which were important for the evolution of the German language; the Middle High German , compiled in Zurich between 1300 and 1340 in the Manesse Song Manuscript, and finally, in the Late Middle Ages, religious pageantry (Christmas, Carnival, Passion and Easter plays, etc.). Humanism, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation led to the establishment of an extensive literary life in German-speaking Switzerland. The works of the physician and naturalist Paracelsus (Theophrastus von Hohenheim, 1493-1541), 200 years ahead of his time, the memoirs of the shepherd turned academic Thomas Platter (1499-1582), and the writings of the Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) all extend beyond regional importance. The 17 th century saw the emergence of an aristocracy in the small states of the Confederation, leading to a certain stagnation in Swiss cultural life. In the final phase of what became known as the

Librariana aims to be a collection of references to libraries and librarians in the world of fiction and in the arts. Archives and documentation centres have also been included if particularly significant or when confused, as often happens, with libraries. The section is divided into several branches, each of them presenting links to similar sites and to the pages created by the editorial team on various topics. In order to compile these pages the available bibliography has been used, as well as information collected among members of the editorial team and colleagues.
    aw-clm@aib.it

Librariana will also receive essays written by colleagues on the topics dealt with in a future section. These contributions that will be examined and adapted if necessary, can be sent by e-mail to the editorial team at the above-mentioned address, after agreeing on file format.
