Beginning Italian literature
Introduction to Italian Literature and Culture (ITA3)
Set texts for 2004-5: (a) Dante Alighieri, selections from Commedia Inferno , 5 and 21; Purgatorio , 5 and 30; Paradiso , 3 and 30). (b) Francesco Petrarca, Rime sparse (selections: see Appendix below). (c) Vittorio De Sica (dir.), Ladri di biciclette (d) Italo Calvino, selections from Gli amori difficili You may be surprised to find that within a few weeks of arriving at Cambridge you are asked to begin reading selections from a number of Italian classics. What follows is intended to explain why the study of literature has been introduced into the ab initio course, and also to give you a fuller idea of the kind of study (and the kind of examination) you will encounter. taught . At the same time, this kind of close study will begin to give you an idea of the resources of Italian. Complex situations and complex states of mind call for complex expression; and the set texts will allow you from the start to stretch your understanding and appreciation of the Italian language beyond the necessarily simplified material found in your language text-books. A further aim of this paper is to provide a foretaste of the areas of study on offer in later parts of the course. If you are interested in pursuing the study of the structure and usage of the Italian language at Part IB and Part II, you will begin to gain a sense of t he richness and complexity of Italian linguistic history. If you are interested in literature and culture you will have the opportunity to begin or extend your studies in this area in a way which is consistent with the Cambridge syllabus. Furthermore, you will be introduced to Italian cinema, the study of which plays a significant role in our teaching at both Part IB and Part II.

Yeats as a Reader of Italian Literature:
    Some Considerations
    Pedro Garcez Ghirardi
Universidade de São Paulo The presence of Italian culture in Yeats's life may be said to go back to his youth. As a painting student he soon must have come across the names of great Italian artists, whose names are mentioned both in his prose writings and in his poetry. The most influential of them, from the point of view of Yeats's works, was certainly Michelangelo, whose magnificent statues were to him a source of inspiration (1), but whose poetry, too, caught Yeats's attention. Before entering this question it is perhaps useful to point that, as regards his contacts with Italy, three moments may be distinguished in Yeats's life. These moments are roughly parallel to the changes in his poetry, which is said to go from a world of dreams through a realistic period to a final synthesis. So, during a first period, which goes from the late 1890s to 1907, his contacts with Italian literature are due to his presence in pre-raphaelite groups. From 1907, the year of his first visit to Italy, up to the years immediately following World War I a second moment takes place, which will lead him to the discovery of Vico, in the 1920s. From then on, a final phase of contacts with Italian literature takes place in Yeats's life. But these moments require closer observation.

Giorgio Bassani Giovanni Boccaccio Gesualdo Bufalino Gabriele D'Annunzio ... Giovanni Guareschi Back to books index The Garden of the Finzi-Continis
by Giorgio Bassani G iorgio Bassani's masterwork has Vittorio de Sica's 1971 film adaptation to thank for its dual success and obscurity. Not enough people know that this tale of a middle-class Jewish youth's obsession with the far more aristocratic Micol Finzi-Contini stems from a novel, not a novelization. Bassani's doom- and tomb-ridden examination of one-sided love is far more complexabout individuals' inability to contend with personal and political annihilation. Events call for heroism, yet it seems "downright absurd that now, all of a sudden, exceptional behavior was demanded of us." The narrator writes in retrospect, 13 years after World War II's end, and reveals the Finzi-Continis' 1943 deportation to Germany right from the start: "Who could say if they found any sort of burial at all?" A s Fascist racial laws go from strength to strength, the family, which had long isolated itself from the other inhabitants of Ferrara, opens its walled grounds and tennis court to other young Jews and even returns to the local temple. Unfortunately, the situation encourages the narrator's dream that Micol will return his love, and she is forced into cruel honesty. "She looked into my eyes, and her gaze entered me, straight, sure, hard: with the limpid inexorability of a sword."
