MARLENE WINELL, who is trying to finish a documentary called "Planet USA." The film, she says, examines the "disconnection between what’s going on in the world — militarily, economically and culturally — and what the average American knows about it." "There are millions of Americans who are given no understanding of what’s happening in the world," said Winell. "It’s not just Iraq; that’s just one thing that people are now starting to be annoyed with as they learn more about it. It really has to do with the economic arrangements around the world." PEARL ALLEY BAND , plus appearances from actors who appeared in the parade such as mock superheros Profit Man and Greed Girl as well as Rambo, Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.

Cabrillo tries technology to improve writing
By JONDI GUMZ

Sentinel staff writer Only 315 of 2,200 students who enrolled in English last fall were eligible for the freshman course "College Composition." Cabrillo’s remedial classes entail a complementary "lab" class for students to practice grammar and word choice on computer. "Up to this point, we’ve been very successful," said Diane Putnam, who oversees the Writing Center. But with fewer staff members to tutor struggling students, she’s afraid "borderline students may not pass." This fall, to try to bridge the gap, Putnam will teach a new online grammar and writing class, using software developed by Stanford University. The class is open to 150 students; 85 have already enrolled. The software, written for gifted college-prep students, explains a range of topics from avoiding run-on sentences to the difference between active and passive verbs. Then students have to complete various exercises, designed by Cabrillo staff, and combine and rewrite problematic sentences.
